Mountain Gardens

10 ай бұрын

In this short documentary film, Dr Azra Bertrand, founder of Biomancy University, joins renowned herbalist and master gardener Joe Hollis at his magical Mountain Gardens home in Appalachia to discuss living a life in co-creation with the earth, and learning from the magic of the plant world.
Mountain Gardens is an educational center and "visionary ecological theater'" in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina. It is home to the largest variety of medicinal herbs in the eastern USA, that Joe has been cultivating for 50 years, living in communion with Gaia and the wisdom of the Plants.

Joe’s not corrupt enough to hold an office in our government! I’m thinking Joe for my temporary guru and plant educator and I’ll work in my stonemason, landscaping, construction… f250 and a 16” trailer with a solid load of my important tools and I’ll move there and provide some back and brawn for your vision… some of your answers we so similar to my thinking that I am really still stunned!!! I know that I couldn’t be alone in my own thoughts or having lived 53 years and studied the planet wondering where those people who were thinking like me. I’d love to add some pool’s to raise fish…to feed myself and other’s and use the water to fertilizer plants or hydroponic a little production greenhouse? Gigantic dandelion green as a bulk emergency food supply? I’d love to have you teach me just a fraction of your Incredible brain usually the Chinese plants in landscape design be interesting it’s very interesting that you’re using it in North Carolina and I need to spend a couple years helping you out… should be able to sell out everything by winter here! 👍😉

My family is from a tribal culture that many ppl do not grasp bc they don't live in an environment or with the environment. It is refreshing to see a white American that is intelligent enough to live right sized, knowing his place in it...instead of being dependent upon it and yet also dominating it merely to extract its beauty and energy. Quite inspiring and glad to know he gave credit to the tribal ppl living in long houses in Borneo. There's a reason why they lived that way for so long and experience joy by doing it the way their ancestors did. I like how Joe saw THAT and was inspired by THAT enough to build his own which also inspires others as well. 😊❤

Eco- magic.....Eco-romance....We are not the only thing on earth...it's not all about you.....Plants quietly observe, and offer...Learn their language....Respect the garden, you too were planted in. We have wantered off the path, but there is still hope. This video is a reminder...it is a sign to the path back to the garden...but you must humble yourself, and be willing to learn, and come with respect. It's a give and take, not just take and destroy without knowing what you have done. 1 earth. A beautiful garden......It knows how if you listen and observe.

I’m setting here absolutely mesmerized that I was so so lucky and gifted enough today to have been shown this incredible video of a beautiful gentleman who is probably one of the only other men who I would absolutely love to wake up every day and have him give me some direction and I could go pound it out or I just would love to be guided by joe in the quest to learn more about medicinal plants. I’ve been doing gardening and landscaping my entire life even on the side as I worked several real jobs because there’s something inside my body that needs to be helping my plants… sick plants and tree’s are pretty ignored around a city area where I have lived and I’ve found after 53 years my soul needs to help those suffering trees and plants and I don’t need money… I’m definitely not a fan of the societal system that I’ve been born into… capitalism is that extremely cold and nasty system for trading some services or goods… I’m just not really happy about this world where everyone is always trying to win a argument or break down the other people and take advantage of their hard work or cut their projects value simply to save more fake wealth! Value and wealth and from your heart not your wallet

I came across Joe Hollis through a video from Pete Santerra. I've been independently studying permaculture, sustainable housing, organic gardening for more than 10 years and am interested in earthship builds, Cobb housing, earthbag shelter builds, etc. I admire Joe's philosphy on detaching from the monetary system and I think it's too bad that these "practitioners" have moved in and found a way to monetize his property by charging thousands of dollars (and I suspect to facilitate these drug induced hallucination camp experiences that have become popular), instead of helping fulfill Joe's dream of actually creating a communal living experience for like-minded lovers of Gaia.

Äm now on my own little half acre in NW Arkansas. My work is named The One Leaf Revolution; as the land yields mostly rocks 😅! But, I do have many deciduous trees, and knew how to make them into dirt. Not quick or easy; but there’s the lesson of coexistence with our Earth Mother! Äm also still a student after a mere 52 years of my 61 years being conscious of the way plants work. Thanks for your work and hope you have many years to come! ☮️& Power to the Plants 🌱

Fantastic Interview Joe. Your garden is so inspiring. I agree with your thoughts on permaculture too. It is becoming more and more intrusive.

Mr. Joe Hollis visited our school at Long Ikang Baram Sarawak Malaysia when I was little. He was one of the PCB (Peace Corps Volunteers) back then. That must have been in the year between 1968-1970. Happy for him. Nice to hear that he is well and fine. Wishing him well and longevity. God blessing. Immanuel❤

Dr. Bertrand, Listening to your conversation with Joe Hollis today caused me to look inward. I was reminded that all the countless days and nights I spent alone in the Sonoran desert infused me with an awareness you men spoke of. From 5 years old I wandered just outside of my home town of Yuma, Arizona into the peace and quiet of the stark sands and dry Mesquite. From the first visit there it was clear to me what many others my age did know. This was a place teeming with life. I saw and felt and heard what was there. And never once did I feel alone or in jeopardy. Every animal and insect and plant infused me with a calmness I found nowhere else. I began walking in life with that peace. My peers in grade school could see it in me. They thought I was weird, and expressed the bewilderment by calling me "Nature Boy", after the Nat King Cole song that was in revival on the radio then. They did not know what to think of someone who spoke to birds and wall lizards and touched trees and plants. I was no magical being as the song spoke of, and I remain as unremarkable today. Yet I feel that unknowingly there was a benefit from being out there so often. I was never stung or pecked by any flying creature - bird or wasp. I have never had a headache nor the flu, and it took until I was past four years into college before I missed a single day of classes from illness - from Kindergarten onward. Mono visited me while attending night classes to try once again for an upper division degree. But that was from burning the proverbial candle at both ends. So the desert and lucky genetics helped my young body and mind. The only point to my story is that listening to the silence out there allowed me to hear and see and feel things that we too often miss. Twice a year, in the early spring after the first thaw and light rain, then again in the fall before the first freeze there is sea of pastel red and purple covers the desert floor for just a few days. If you are lucky you can catch a glimpse of it by bending down and looking out across the land to see the sand disappear beneath a wash of color. Many times Mocking birds would follow me around during walks, chirping and fussing as I mimicked their noise, to their great displeasure. I have been close to wild cats, foxes, snakes, and many other critters without incident. It seemed to me that everything out there is trying so hard to survive that there is little energy left for aggression. But at 71 years old now I remain naive. I just wanted to share a bit of these experiences with you so you can know that I understand some of what you feel. Happy Trails from an old desert rat. Larry Keyes

I appreciate you showing us this beautiful place, Mountain Gardens, that Joe has created with nature. But I would have liked to hear more from Joe, you did all the talking. I would have liked to have heard Joe tell us how he interacts with the land and the plants. And what the plants provide him with. Does he grow his own food? What does he grow? How does he survive? We saw the tinctures but were never told anything about them. What are the tinctures for? Does he sell them? It was beautiful videography, but I was left knowing more about what you felt and thought, than understanding what Joe had created.

Exactly thinking the same. Joe was mostly listening to dr. Azra Bertrand, who was so full of himself and his ideas and knowledge. A missed opportunity to learn from a very wise man.
