Guatemala. Arévalo, Presidente | Under the Shadow, Update 1

Guatemala's new president Bernardo Arévalo was inaugurated on January 14. But it did not come off without a hitch. Outgoing opposition lawmakers did their best to try to stymie the swearing-in of Arévalo and some of his party members. Arévalo’s supporters rallied in Guatemala City.
As we looked at in Episode 2, Bernardo Arévalo is the son of Guatemala's first democratic leader Juan José Arévalo, who ushered in the Guatemalan Spring. Bernardo Arévalo has promised to lift Guatemala once again, but… even after winning the election, he faced constant legal maneuvers, led by the attorney general, that aimed to overturn the results and block his inauguration.
In this update to our reporting on Guatemala, host Michael Fox speaks with political scientist Jo-Marie Burt. She was on the ground in Guatemala City for Arévalo’s inauguration. In this update, she takes us there, and looks at what it means for Arévalo’s incoming government.

the inauguration was merely a protocolary act. Arevalo was already the president, legally, at 2:00 PM . The former president had renounced his position. But, elites entrenched in the "Camara de comercio" the same one which gave death lists to death squads time ago, will offer the American president mining rights and economic commodities in exchange for declaring Arevalo a communist aligned with some dark power and BAM! we're back in hell. I has happened before, when Eisenhower and the Dulles brothers were given stock in the United Fruit company in exchange for a change of government which resulted in 200,00 dead Guatemalans. Yes Eisenhower....

Juan José Arévalo was not the first democraticaly elected president of Guatemala. Was the most popular yes, but there's no need to create myths to enhance his memory still less to promote his son, elected by a party founded by a US domesticated ex-comunist and a bunch of USAID/UNDP bureaucrats, red-pink outside white-pink inside, with full US embassy support. 🥸
