This video is about the most obvious GUE Fundamentals Equipment you gonna need for your GUE Fundamentals class with me (or most likely any other GUE Instructor) - the tanks and regulators. I explain which tanks are recommended to use, if you have to buy double tanks and what lengths are recommended for your hoses.
One thing I forgot to mention: Don't buy 300 bar tanks! They suck! ;)

Thank you for this video, Ben. I was curious on about your routing for the double valve, single tank. You rigged it like a single tank. Could you do a video of how to route hoses and positioning the first stage on the double valve, single tank? My logic would be that there wouldn't be room for the first stages facing each other, so maybe they would be facing down or away from each other? I would love to see a video on this. Btw, my first stages are like the ones you use on the double tank setuo with the 5th port.

Hi DoktorBEN! First of all, thank you for this helpful video and, in general, for all the videos offered in your channel I have a question about the double tanks. Are there and differences between convex bottom cylinders and flat bottom cylinders? Initially I think the flat bottom double could be more convenient for standing in the ground, but I've appreciated that most of the technical divers have convex bottom doubles.
@DoktorBEN
@DoktorBEN 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Typically, concave ones are heavier especially at the bottom. I personally don’t find them more convenient, because I don’t let tanks stand anyway if not tied up.
@rednissan001
@rednissan001 2 жыл бұрын
Flat bottoms (euro tanks) tend to be longer than convex bottoms and tend to work better for twins as the extra length helps with trim.
@DoktorBEN
@DoktorBEN 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah depends. They’re usually heavier what can be less beneficial, too. But they are heavy at the bottom which is good for people who are head heavy in terms of trim

I noticed your swivel styled first stages (I suppose Scubapro?) - I own a Atomic T3 that I got on a good deal. However, these are officially certified to only 50m of depth, which seems to be a bottleneck from an insurance point of view. Would you rather go for a set of new and cheaper regulators (f.e. Apeks), which are potentially certified for deeper profiles - or just get a second Atomic T3 (which I love) to add to the setup?
@DoktorBEN
@DoktorBEN 3 жыл бұрын
Well...I wouldn’t recommend doing anything without the proper certification... however, it seems to be an issue with insurance not with regulators. DAN for instance covers no matter what regulator you use, as long as you stay within safe gas limits. I personally own Atomic M1 as main regulators - the one I use in most videos - and they’re used deeper than 50m 😉

Hey, Ben! Thank you for the video, just wanted to ask if you could please specify why you recomend using double outlet on a single 12L tank and why would you use two 1stages on a single tank anyway?
@DoktorBEN
@DoktorBEN Жыл бұрын
Because, if one fails and you no spare. The oring that most likely fails is the one on the SPG or right at the first stage. In that case, you lose all your gas pretty quickly. With two stages on different valves, you can close one and use the other for a safe ascent. If you have just one valve…there are no other options than gas sharing with your buddy, which is higher risk than just using your backup regulator.

I enjoy your videos! However, I am afraid I won't follow the recommandation of doing the GUE-F with single tank dual outlet. As a beginner, I chose to do the GUE-f in single tank because I don't have training for doubles yet and prefer to minimize the amount of new things to learn in one course. I also plan to own all my equipment except the tank and my impression is that a dual outlet is a rare specie to rent. In a near future, I'll progress to double tanks and I'll definitely use double first stages. When beginning diving, there's so many interdependencies between equipment, training requirements and instructors advices. Making good choices is far from obvious.
@DoktorBEN
@DoktorBEN Жыл бұрын
That’s true. If it’s rare depends on where you are in the world. But I think going for doubles will be the best choice

Hello Ben, I have a question about regulators and cant find the answer anywhere, (maybe it's just obvious or stupid...) : Let say i want to train with twinset but my wallet is thin... so i m thinking of using 2 diffrent regulators. I have a nice one already: an aqualung legend that i would like to use as my main regulator (the one on my right) and for the other, i would buy a cheaper not balanced one like the mk2 with r195 (that is still a very solid regulator imho because it's "basic"). Would it still fit the GUE requirements ? Im not interested in doing very deep dives or extreme stuffs for now but would like to aim for a tech pass anyway (because why not?). Thanks for your answer.
@DoktorBEN
@DoktorBEN 3 жыл бұрын
Well, the standards don‘t say anything about the general quality of regulators. Although it‘s advised to have regs in equal high quality. Look at this from another perspective: Having a good primary and a shitty backup means you breathe from the shitty regulator in case of an OOG scenario...

Hi Ben, have you tried kinking a rubber/miflex/miflex-XT hose? I tried this and even pressurised, miflex are surprisingly easy to kink enough to stop airflow. Surprisingly, modern rubber hoses are also super flexible and are easy to kink (compared to the older stiffer rubber hoses). There is one situation where I think this may be relevant- in a non-swivel first stage with the long hose coming out at the bottom of the first stage- in OOA situation, if the recipient of the long hose pulls away hard, it really could be possible I think to kink the hose where it is coming out from the first stage. Would like to know what your thoughts are for this. Of course it is irrelevant with a turret/swivel style first stage.
@DoktorBEN

No the backup during a valve drill. House protectors have the disadvantage that you cannot really see when the house is about to break due to aging. Best would be to have a good hose routing

I don't think that single tank double valve is good combination. Tank is front much heavier because of double regs and vents . It is heavy to work OOG practice (2 regs) because knobs are close together and interfere with 1'st stages and tank should be because of balance more back ( could be corrected with weights ) but with single 18l, 232 bar Faber tank , which is hell buoyant is that mission close to impossible.... be there and learn out NO GO only 1'st stage -OK

It's not that you get a private high class 1 to 1 training with normoxit blends and equipment, ore Learning to service equipment. In the beginning this GUE Fundamental course cost $410 usd and 60 bucks for the registration if i'm right. So prices have been going up good. Most Instructors didn't paid the full price for the courses. Just the registration fees and cost for equipment. This is all buddy friends work, like ill teach you this for a normal fee. I see this also with Innerspace explorers in Germany and with Padi instructors that are cashing some easy money. So why should i pay a huge amount off money for something basic . UTD essentials is also way cheaper than GUE. IANTD also. GUE is scaring REC divers Away because off the huge prices. The GUE registration and card doesn't mean much to me. All i want to do is learn a few tricks to dive safe. And that's not worth 800 euro for just trimming sessions in the local muddy lake. I will go for the unofficial way, and pay a instructor some cash without the 100 euro GUE registration and having a good day. Ore GUE reduces the pricing permanently for GUE Fundamentals Course to ensure that newcomers will keep coming. All The dive equipment i buy is from Diveinn in Spain. Saves me 21% while my local dealer doenst want to give me any discount. A pair off fins 100 euro incl shipping while the local dealer asking 130 euro plus 7 euro shipping. @@africantwin173 Diving safe isn't about learning tricks. It starts with the mentality (in GUE's case, the DIR philosophy), which then provides the rationale for all the things you learn in class (i.e. refined methods of propulsion, awareness of self/others/environment, rigorous pre/post-dive briefings, commitment to skills refinement etc etc) for planning and conducting a dive safely. Fundies is not just a class for trim, although there is a huge emphasis on buoyancy/trim throughout the class because you can't expect to progress on to harder things and greater taskloading if you don't have total control over these fundamentals. I don't think it's expensive considering the amount of class time (I did 10-12 hrs/day). After all, you are not shopping for a product; you are paying someone (instructor) for their time and help.
