Stellar review! VETIVER de GUERLAIN has been a standard of my fragrance wardrobe for decades: for several years I wore only this. To my nose, the original eau de cologne from the ‘60s/‘70s was virtually indistinguishable from the second bottle you reviewed (dating to the late ‘80s/early ‘90s). I believe that your hunch is correct: from experience, I can definitely assure you that, as it matures, the original evolves into a much darker, rootier, smokier, and considerably drier scent than when new. One of the great attributes of vetiver root is that it matures remarkably well: even when exposed to less than perfect storage conditions, over time, the scent develops a deeper, darker, graver, almost brooding aspect. Still, even when newly produced, I remember the original eau possessing drier and deeply verdant notes as compared to the fresher, more hesperidic character of the more recent iterations (from 2000-present). Great channel, you’ve got; I recently stumbled on it via Ramsay’s equally excellent channel, and subscribed. Greetings from Greece!

One of my favorite notes. I have a bunch of Verviers from different time and different brands and have come to the conclusion that Vetiver from Guerlain is just perfect…it just smells good, oh so good. That’s an interesting take on why vintage bottles are easily found in Canada. It’s sort of easy to find vintage bottles in Los Angeles…it just requires leg work. There are so many little perfume shops off the beaten path that have been around for 30 or more years. And the second hand shops often have perfumes. I’ve acquired a bottle of Coty Chypre for $10.00 (my most Bragg worth purchase…and it still smells sort of amazing). But it makes leg work…not internet search. Nice video Rich. Thanks!

Interesting theory about Canada. I think it also has to do with our very large elderly population. Lots of hoarded antiques. Also, our massive european influence - especially in Quebec, like you said. Canada is closer to 45 Million btw - there are more than 5 million in Toronto itself lol. Good video

I compared the listerine-style bottles last week and decided that the newer one without the gold writing better expressed what I was looking for the perfume for me. I sent the gold back. The newer bottle is much fresher and stays fresher on my skin. The gold writing bottle just seemed too “muddled,” and maybe for that impression of vetiver I’d rather turn to other brands. Testing vintage Givenchy and Goutal vetiver next. Excellent video and I need to try the striped bottle apparently.
@RichMitch
@RichMitch Жыл бұрын
That could be because of maturation over time or just a style tweak. I know exactly what you mean about a perfume expressing what you want. For me, vintages seem to do that more often than newer bottles but there's no right or wrong answer. I have many newer versions and newer releases that I love

over the years I have decided that Guerlain’s vintage Vetivers are the only true “vetiver” centered fragrances I actually love. I can wear others, but they’re only ok. Imlike vetiver as a subtle base note, but generally find it too harsh. I sadly had to return a gold cap bottle to an ebay seller who obviously had newer juice in it. that sucked. but at least they accepted the return.

Hi! discovered your videos recently after following other well known chaps :) yes, 2F01 is 2002 because from 2010 it is the second half of the alphabet that is used and also coincides with the launch of this layered bottle in 2000 which was stopped in 2008. Excellent video Rich! The ribbed bottle was my introduction to vetiver and I absolutely loved it! You’re quite right in your assessment! Very frsh and green. It had a timeless gentleman vibe to it! Neither dated nor modern! The newer bottle I totally hated it. I almost used up my bottle but I couldn’t wear it anymore. It had a very waxy texture to it - it seemed more like a grandma perfume. Even got me wondering if perhaps my bottled had turned bad. Anyway, hope to maybe one day find a ribbed bottle (for my pleasure!). Cheers mate! Greetings and a quack from Texas!

This was a classic Rich Mitch production, good to see Guerlain Vetiver getting some love. I started wearing this in 1981 thru to mid 80's on and off. Bought another early 90's and that was the last time until recently and boy it's good and the scent memories come flooding back. Really interesting hearing your theory on vintage stock in Canada. I feel similar in certain places in Italy and Greece, pre COVID on a Greek Island I was in an old pharmacy and was laughing to myself seeing on the packed dusty shelves old stock Sagamore, Smalto,Trussardi, VC&A PH, Balenciaga PH, Gianfranco Ferre and Kouros, thinking to myself those won't sell, I last wore those blah blah. They had countless price stickers on them one on top of the other getting cheaper and cheaper from Drachmas to euros. I had no idea I would be tracking them down earnestly in the future....what an idiot, if only. It's all about the bass.....showing your age there! As for the lobotomized Vetiver.... 🤣. You're mate is so lucky, nice thing to do there Rich. All the best.

Thank you for such soulful review. I have similar experience. But my oldest was with "oval window" shape of bottle from, I believe, 1976. Strong hay note at start, reminded me Equus Lalique. No citrus at all. But with drilling freshness note in the middle and bitter, dry vetiver in the base. The ribbed bottle was too much for me from all points of view. Strong, drilling start of stunning sharp combination of vetiver and tobacco that sores your throat. Still no citrus. Lasts all day long, very powerful. And my favourite is silver cap version from 2014. 2015 (silver too) seemed to be poorer. Here I can get beautiful bergamot at the start. Unfortunately it fades away very soon. This version is smooth enough not to annoy you. Damned tonka bean could be more modest here, it brings "carrot" feeling. I don't know green cap version or square l'homme kind of version. Silver cap is very comfortable, really working horse.
