The next big question was about using Citadel Contrast to paint Metallic Power Armour (such as for Pre-Heresy Space Marines). I take a look at using the paints for this purpose for Alpha Legion, Salamangers, Thousand Sons and Blood Angels!

I know they say a “thick” layer, but from watching other videos I think your going too think. I believe (from watching other videos) you’ll get better results by wiping away the raised areas instead of letting it pool, such as on the shoulders.

@@TheGreatDayne1983 its not, man. Im serious. It just kind of looks bad IMO. I dont have a pic on hand unfortunately but I did it on a singpe arm to test it out in my demo. It doesnt look good. I recommend basilicanum grey (i think thats what it's called) instead. The black just looks like splotchy oily gunk. But not in a good way.

@@charlesschwimmer592 Thanks for the heads up! I'm getting into painting a High Elf army and am looking to base several of the models with Leadbelcher. I've been considering using contrasts but I may just avoid it given that they seem to be so hit or miss (even for experienced painters as opposed to a starter like myself).

I read an early review from someone at the convention where they announced the line that spoke to someone at the show that had experimented with candy coating with the contrast paints. They reported that it worked better when they were thinned a bit rather than using them straight out of the bottle.

Another hint of how old those models are is that the right hand isn't attached to the gun (unless you went to the trouble of cutting each hand off, etc). In the box I got recently, the guns all have hands attached to them. If you're open to feedback, I would suggest slowing everything down just a little bit. I know you're just doing a quick test, not trying to win awards, but you might as well take a moment to make sure it's a decent test. When it's all pooled an inconsistent and not fully dry, it doesn't show us much. What I'm gonna try when my stuff shows up is to mix some contrast + medium + metallic paint to see how that looks.

Thanks for covering this. I was one of the folks who asked about this yesterday so appreciate the video response. I'm not really impressed with the results though so won't be using the technique as an alternative (I don't own an airbrush). @@GuerrillaMiniatureGames Not trying to offend anyone or shit talking you, but if people think the contrast paint is some magical construct that can turn a lousy job into a advertised-as-"battle-ready" result, they are kidding themselves. Sure, I welcome the idea of inks and glazes on Zenithal highlighted models to make painting easier and faster, but some care has to be put into it. You have to watch out for intense pooling in the lower areas of the model and be neat about it after the base coat since it'll be a chore to cover up any mistakes with contrast paint. It's a great tool but just saying it's not as magical as advertised. BTW, try using red contrast paint on brass base(Balthatsar Gold) , it'll have a better metallic red finish than on silver.

@@jasongrundy1717 The point everyone is missing is that these are *not* paint tutorials. They are just tech demos of the so called "contrast" system. The instructions tell people to put it on super thick; I saw some pros do their first contrast minis, and they looked terrible since they could not believe how thick you needed to do it. Others have put it on too thick since how thick is thick exactly? @Storva, the system is aimed at beginner painters so you should not need a "pro" to use it - defeats the entire object.
