Immersive mass creating, limited time craft is fundamental. I come from theatre where we’d do repertory, 12 plays in 12 weeks. Rehearse Wednesday to Tuesday, Sunday off. Tech dress and open on Tuesday, start the next show rehearsals the next day. It makes everything easy after it. Your craft goes through the roof if you’re paying attention to it and have an even limited time compared to the norm is now a luxury. Epic work methodology that can work for any creative.

Pretty interesting review. I haven't played AOS and haven't played 40k in forever, but I've always thought about it. I got into the war games through Warmachine, so this seems a little like the community developed Brawlmachine except officially supported by GW. However, I won't be trying to get into the Skaventide big box. That's just too much stuff and more than I want to pay right now. It will be interesting to see what the release will look like when they divide the Spearhead parts out of the big box for individual sale. Will that make the price point much less inviting? Will I then need to purchase a book, a board, some card decks and 1-2 Spearhead boxes separately? Will they print enough cards? Also, one of the things that has intrigued me about AOS is the magic phase. However, from what I understand magic is now just broken up into "abilities" in 4th edition. Also, it seems like magic might be an "advanced" rule and so is not included in Spearhead at all. Is that true?

I thought Combat Phase abilities triggered at the start of the phase for both players before Fights. Active player uses all of their abilities, then defending player, then Fights. So the Rat Ogres would have had to decide to super juice before any attacks were rolled. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Can you refill your hand if you choose to take the double like Ash did in round 4? I thought that was the big new thing for 4th. Does being the underdog let you break that rule?

I gotta admit I also don't like the turn 1 twist, it just feels odd that there is a "twist" before the battle even begins. Also kinda important note, if you take the double you Don't get to draw any cards.

I don't know if its just me, but I kinda feel like the person going second should count as the round 1 underdog. Especially since a unit which has a movement of 5 still will probably make a charge. It might be different for 2000 point games, but at least for these small ones...

The scale of this game, and its objective markers, give it a real Warmachine feel; but without the gotcha aspect of Warcaster killing to win the game. A Chaos Lord, getting confused about where he is, is very on brand.
