This honestly feels like the most accessible thing GW has done in a long time.

I want to like this box, but let's look at the entire experience of starting with this set, and trying to move up to the "full" KT experience. $75 Full rulebook $40 Approved ops cards $55 equipment pack That's another $170 CAD (on top of the initial $135 for this set), before buying any new models or terrain. As a new hobbyist, you're not likely to know where you can cut corners on this list. For comparison, Space Marine 2 is $90 and delivers the complete product experience, not just a demo. $305 can also buy you some pretty nice designer board games instead. From this perspective, Kill Team is not a very attractive entry point into the hobby. It certainly gives you a taste of what it's like to play GW games though. Although not available in a box, I think new hobbyists would be better off to buy a book like Stargrave or download One Page Rules, and buy a couple boxes of models that appeal to them (GW or otherwise). This hobby doesn't have to be crushingly expensive, contrary to the GW experience of it.

Completely agree. If the rules are paid-for, the starter kit needs to have them in the box.

It's mad to compare 40k to any other game on value terms though. There's simply no universe in which a Warhammer product is going to compete with Stargrave, Xenos Rampant or any other indie game/mini combination. But competing with any other 40k intro path, this is hugely more viable.

@@Anchises I don't follow your logic. I think we agree that the alternatives to KT for sci-fi skirmish gaming are Stargrave, OPG, etc. That's what the GW rules are competing with. The fact that GW pricing only looks reasonable when compared to itself doesn't make it any more competitive. Although this box is a smaller initial purchase, when you add up the total to get fully into KT, you'd actually be better off with the Hivestorm box. And if you start looking beyond the walls of GW, you can get much more for your dollars.

@@saltfreegamer At least for the time being, those items can be picked up on Ebay for a fraction of what GW charges. Plenty of people out there that bought multiple starter boxes to make money by parting out the pieces for less than retail, but enough to make a profit from each box. Plus, the equipment pack is just scatter terrain and a couple of measuring devices that ANYONE could easily make/buy themselves. A 6 inch ruler only cost a couple of bucks.

@@JMcMillen Agreed, that's the only way I was willing to buy into this edition. But new hobbyists shouldn't be expected to track down what they need on the secondary market. I wish GW offered genuinely affordable gateways into the hobby, instead of these bait and switch demo products, that set new hobbyists up for a nasty price shock. It's unnecessarily cynical on their part. Hot take: Once people are in, they will spend plenty on their new plastic toy addiction. You don't have to squeeze their wallets so hard at the front door.

This is such a great release for the game. The Death Guard handing out Poison tokens (instead of plague tokens) makes me stare at the wall in deep contemplation for a few minutes though. How did that happen? I'm so curious.

I'm tempted, as I haven't bought any KT stuff since the 2018 game, and minis that I used for rosters for that game. What has me tempted is the SM minis, the board, and the MDF terrain. The materials like tokens and such would be cool too, as well as I guess the guide and such to learn the new game as it's been a while. I've been a collector for years but only play casually and occasionally, and haven't played many games of ANYTHING for a while other than OPR Firefight. After Christmas is over I may go ahead and get this set.

Maybe a dumb question, but I have been out of KT and 40k since maybe 2018/8th Ed 40k. Does this have any value for me to jump back in, or is it really meant for someone almost net new to the game?
@JMcMillen9 күн бұрын
Given that GW completely revamped the rules for KT a few years ago (2021?), it could be worth it to learn the new version. You'd still need to pick up a few things to move up to the full game, but a trip to Ebay can save money on those items, if you decided to keep playing.

Unfortunately, the thing that makes this a terrible starter set is that it's sold out. So a casual person wanting to give it a try won't be able to get one, because they were all bought up by people who just wanted the models, or wanted to resell the models on ebay, and just throw out the other stuff. Hopefully GWwill make more soon, otherwise this can't really accomplish the purpose. And it's pretty much too late to have enough ready for Christmas.

I picked this up simply to get others into the game. MDF terrain fills a better role than the scatter terrain in last editions starter set. My feel is that Hive Storm is a game in a box but not a starter set. Also, Hive Storm will go away, whereas this will be here for the full edition.
