I agree. Great exciting stage. I also think Jesse's concerns about weather are a non-issue. Gravel is generally more stable and predictable when wet, unlike cobbles. Though the riders will get covered in it by the end of the stage.

Congratulations on the pickup of the Favero sponsorship! I always find reviews of any of the Favero pedals to be a bit curious....what is there to say about a product that works perfectly and is the standard by which every other product in the field is compared? I am a very satisfied Favero road pedal user. I would not ever consider running anything else.

Great pod. Loved the gravel stage I thought it was super interesting, next time would be great with a few hills to spice it up, but a gravel stage helps break up the monotony of endless boring sprint stages. Definitely don't want to see "chunky" gravel, but some light gravel is cool. No cobble stages in the tour please. Love that Favero is supporting you guys, you deserve it. Love when Jessie talks about his training too. Thanks!

re Remco's shoes: did you watch Alex Dowsett's wind tunnel testing series? Laces more aero than Boas plus plenty of other surprise results. The Specialized TT helmet is built specifically for Remco, his jersey sleeves are very short because unlike most people that works better for him etc. so you have to assume they optimised shoes in the wind tunnel and every other little detail they could.

On the Aero Bike discussion, the Cannondale SSEVO4 lab71 tests faster than the SL8 with it's hidden cables, and is a hair heavier. Plus you can put whatever fancy bars you want on it. You can run the Lab71, put CRW wheels and a Farsports bar on it, GP5000TT rear and Aero111 Front tire, and you'd be right near the UCI limit for a bike faster in the wind than an SL8. Little less comfy than the sl8, yes, but technically the question didn't come from that. Also, I was the roadsuit you guys shipped to Massachusetts a couple weeks back, fits great!

I agree 100%. I would also add that the Specialized frameset needs to be tested and analyzed for strength by the UCI. I saw the crash and the frame damage indicates poor design or material quality issues. If I owned an SWorks8 I would be concerned. Or the team is getting special carbon layups, which I believe is a breach of UCI rules.

Doesn't happen on Specialized shoes though in my experience. I have got a pair of Ares in all white with fabric at the ankle still white after a year, but my s-works 7 have a faux leather like material in that area, which also remains white. Well, it does get only ever slightly greyish from road dust after a while, but defo not yellow from sweat.

I do not think Stuyven results would have been any difference with the Gen 7, I believe he was in a headwind by himself and 1 guy versus 10 coming full power , not going to happen. Also Stuyven is a pretty big guy, so he is less aero than most of the other guys.

I would say the Stork Aerfast 5 is definitely an aero-bike. Agree the Simplon seems a bike difficult to source and proprietary stem & bars is a worry - though the guy the won 1 of the US Tulsa crits seemed to be running a normal stem with narrow bars on his. You can run a standard stem on a SystemSix as Have one with narrow bars, but Cannondale seems to have stopped production. The Ribble has a standard steer tube too & looks like a SystemSix on steroids though the BB is higher. The Dare looks interesting & I expect that the Van Rysel prototype will be descent as I expect it will include Swissside aero input (like the Simplon).

Regarding Vinokourov, I think that's a bit harsh. Whilst I am certainly not a fan, I think most people now accept that during the time he was riding (90's and 00's) that a significant portion of the peleton were riding with additional supplementation and were only detected when the made a mistake (too much, unlucky with random testers etc)

If you can't finish a stage you can't finish a stage. I'm happy for it to be that the rider gets driven to join the riders when the crash happened to ensure a full check is done... but there needs to be limits. Say within 5-10km maybe? If you crash in the first 5km of a 200km ride, have the day off and then come back a day later...even if you were concussed...you have a HUGE advantage being fresher. Especially if it's a mountain stage. All for rider safety...not at all interested in riders being able to skip a stage. Crashes are part of the race after all.

In regards to the agile, I've been waiting for a longer term review since the bike was announced. I might be in the minority because I plan on building up a bike from the frame up when the time comes. I like the idea of being able to get exactly what i want as far as handlebars width and crank length. I think the problem is that people don't care about a first look anymore. We know Winspace is going to send a frame and the packaging will be nice. A first ride impression isn't that helpful compared to a long term review like what Chris is doing with the TCR where we can get some feedback about how it rides with various wheels, situations, etc

If you did the silhouette test with bikes from the 80s they would look the same. Legs get the job done not bikes. Cab. Won and lost many stages on different bikes, made no difference

XDS has been in the business for quite some time, and they appeared around the same time as ZGL and Kung, so a little after Quick. They weren't received well back then in China because of their generic designs, rather poor qualities, and uninspiring or even hideous brand name (depending on your name). But it seems like they have survived long enough in the lower tier market to finally take the big step upward, and what a step it was. Though the news have been leaked on Chinese social media since the beginning of the year, actually seeing it being publicly talked about is still pretty surreal

I'm okay with a true gravel stage existing, if it's in fact truly gravel, not a road race with some gravel sectors in it. Reason being, it's a game of not flatting on their setup now. If you make the day a true gravel day, now we have people on gravel bikes, or at least tires with some hope of surviving. Not luck. If you put a rally section, 500m long, on an F1 track, people would go nuts and say it's dumb and I'd agree. If the gravel stage has 10 miles of road on it, but the rest is dirt/gravel/cobbles, and someone goes I'm going to run road tires for an advantage there, go nuts but dumb idea most likely. Since it's a job for these riders, at least make it possible for them to do it, not HOPE they do it. I do agree that in this day and age, totally acceptable to throw in a gravel day if you want to win the TdF. Not okay with them doing it on thin race tires made for a totally different purpose but necessary for the day since it's 90% road or whatever it was. Be sensible.

Best just buy a 2017 Cannondale Synapse, at least it has clearance for 28-30mm tires that most rim brake road bikes will not. But even with 28mm tires I've still had races where stones got caught between tire and caliper and ruined my race, which is why I then moved to disc brake TCR.

@@highfived Yes it is but that does not hold it back any, I have exactly the same fit as per my TCR, don't get hung up on labels. I raced it for years before getting my TCR and sold my previous Scott because it would only fit 25mm tires, I was running 28mm tires before it became vogue, they are just so much better.

28:59 Favero Assioma PRO MX-2 on their website clearly shows 11.2mm is pedal stack height. So including cleat it is 18.2mm. Pedal & Cleat stack heights are, XTR is 15.5mm, SPD-SL 14.6mm, Speedplay is 11.5mm (8.5mm for 4hole). So if you usually use SPD-SL on road, you need to raise saddle by 4-5mm. I purchased PRO MX-2 but on road I use Speedplay so needed to raise almost 1cm so I stopped using PRO MX-2. I'm not pointing only to Chris, but I hate all these KZbinrs when they don't even measure/understand what stack height is and advertise as 11.2mm. They are promoting false economy. They show 11.2mm next to XTR's 15.5mm to mislead as if PRO MX-2 stack is lower. Only one I find so far did mention PRO MX-2 has higher stack than XTR is PeakTorque by the way.
