Scotland the Brave isn't the Scottish national anthem. It's Flower of Scotland: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3bFeHZniryUgrM To be honest, most Scottish people find Scotland the Brave really cheesy and ridiculous. You'll only ever hear it played by bagpipers for tourists.

“Cotton Eyed Joe” is actually an American folk song dating back to the 1800s. One of the earliest known recordings of the song was in 1928. The Swedish band, Rednex, released their version in 1994, and is probably the most well-known rendition. The band takes a lot of inspiration from American country and folk music, I mean look at their name!

Scotland is part of the united kingdom, which is the country. Though truth be told I'm not 100% on that, but as far as I know scotland isn't it's own independant country. Rather a part of a country that has it's own distinct cultural identity. Similarly to bavaria lmao
@user-gg8tl5yt7d

It's awkward because if you look up "Scotland" or "United Kingdom" on wikipedia, they're both described as being a "country". Offhand I don't know how Bavaria's legal status is defined, but there are a lot of countries with subregions that are functionally more autonomous than Scotland is, so I don't know why it would bother Bavarians. Though, I have heard someone say "Bavaria is basically the Texas of Germany" which I didn't understand at the time, but it's starting to click I think 😂

I would love to go on a long talk about how confusing constituent countries is as a geography nerd and historian. To keep things simple I'll explain it like this. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is one autonomous unit that is the functioning face for four other countries; England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. They are all country via technicality of this that function under one government who represents them all. Much in the same way that Aruba, Curaçao, The Netherlands, and Sint Maarten are all countries that function under the Kingdom of the Netherlands. We usually only think of, in that case, The Netherlands in Europe when we hear the name but it really covers all bases. Constituent Countries are extremely confusion since technically we could go into the Republics and Oblasts of Russia as those are countries within a country that they have to abide by, same with all the states in the United States of America or the Emirates in the United Arab Emirates (notice the theme with united in the titles?). It is just really interesting and confusing how these nations without diplomatic relations work under these one major recognized countries of USA, UAE, UK, Russia, or Kingdom of the Netherlands. I'd really recommend doing more research into it since I only talk examples here, I am genuinely passionate about this and would love to discuss further the intricacies of how these nations work.

I'm Russian from Germany and I speak Ukrainian. I only knew the song from Harry Potter (the English version of it). I was surprised that the song originally comes from Ukraine, beautiful song. Would like to know what genre or what the history of these songs is in Ukraine. I mean, is it from the Orthodox Christian Church or from the time of the Soviet Union?...

@@KroxohneCHrox so it was composed by Leontovych in the beginning of XX century (very probably giving a specific shape to a vague cloud of folklore lyrics and melody). And after he and the choir had tour in Europe, this song became popular outside of Ukraine

@@KroxohneCHrox the song is based on Ukrainian folk songs called "щедрівка" (shchedrivka). On New Year's Eve, people visit the homes of others and sing these songs, wishing everything good, it's an old tradition

Same here, with things like these. In a way, that reflects how cultures are in general, a lot of the time. Since specifics, as well as groups, are both important classifications and identifiers in their own rights. That's part of why I find learning about other countries and cultures so fascinating, because of how they compare and contrast from one another, and how countries split, merge, and interact throughout history.

@@KingK2205 I've had an interest in slavic nations for quite some time already, though my focus was mostly on Russia. Something about a country constantly hurting itself and always looking for an identity, despite having so much culture to export to the world, it interests me. It's only a few weeks before the big invasion in 2022 that i realized Ukraine was in a similar situation, but with much more hope in becoming something greater. This war is an opportunity to build back like the country has never had since the collapse of the USSR and with so many Ukrainian refugees here in Canada to talk to and learn from, I've never felt closer to the people i've been reading about. I've been trying to learn the language a bit too here and there, and to be honest, as someone who has trouble staying motivated to learn something new, the constant news about Ukraine reminds me to continue learning bits of the language here and there. I understand its a little shallow to care "all of a sudden" despite the Annexation of Crimea having happened years ago and the conflicts in Донбaс never really ending, but i see it more as moving my focus from Russia, a lost cause of a nation, to Ukraine who has shown itself as more than capable to become something better.

The fact that you wrote the country Moldova wrong and I’m from Romania 🥹👍 Romania knows everything about Moldova and the epic sax guy song will always be in Romania’s heart.
