"Barge pole" a long pole that was used on canal boats (barges) to push against the banks of the canal. He (peter Kay) is very good at reminding us of the silly things we do and say (and that generations before us have done to) I like him because he keeps to what we all do and say and doesnt get political. Brings the room together rather than look for divisions.

Michael Farrell: As anything but a right-winger (well, I don’t lean heavily either way, to be honest), there are plenty of leftists who get upset at political comedy. There are exceptions like Brum and parts of London obviously but nowadays Birmingham and especially London have become far too Cosmipoliton shall we say.The dry humour and bluntness to one another and the persistent banter and in a mocking and self depricating way is far more widespread and common up North. More people are traditionally, well less off and are of proper working class stock and descent in one part of the country. Even small towns and most villages are the same. Outside these type of working class areas in the Midlands and the South, there are more well off areas and 'Tory' type voting areas also...

in England, there is a community of people who lived on Barges. A Barge is a boat up to 72 feet long and 6 feet wide. The boats called Barges or Narrowboats are mainly transversing along canals (man made waterways) the pole helps you move your Barge around the cut (canal) when you are in a tight space or when you were pulled by horses, and the horse couldn't pull you.

A barge pole is literally that. It is a long pole used on a barge to keep it from drifting to close to the shore if you were navigating a canal or river. You use it to push off against objects at a distance so its used in metaphor as a way of saying as a way to emphasise to keep your distance from someone. Edit: Also Netto is a ridiculously cheap discount supermarket selling knock off branded and self branded products at stupidly low prices and Quavers are a corn/maize based snack a bit similar to cheese puffs but they're curled.
