At my school, the guidance counselors put out a questionnaire to the students the first day that basically asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?", "What steps are you taking towards that goal?", and "Is there anything about this that you need to speak to a guidance counselor about?" If you didn't answer the third question with a question, they considered their jobs finished for the year.

A guidance counselor is something I would accel at and put much more effort into, but I have to spend years and 40000 dollars to get a degree for it first, yet many of the people that got the degree already get jobs that they don't care about. At this point it's easier just to go to vocational school. I remember when it was a big deal to be the first person in your family to go to college. Then there was a while where everyone was able to go to college for a bit a very short period of time. And now no one can go to school again. I was lucky because there was more scholarship options when I was going to college. But it was still rough because I still had to work like two jobs to pay some of it.

@@e4mi 3 years? Cute. Did you actually go to all these neighborhoods and interact with the community or just stay on campus and make assumptions from the news/driving past? There are a lot of good people doing good work here. I also find a lot of the work and neighborhood personalities to be comparable to other, more well known and well thought of, cities. A lot of people need to re-learn “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” In terms of Syracuse, I would amend it to be “if you don’t have anything nice to say, do something to make it better or keep your mouth shut.”

It depends on your Feild and whether you truly know what you want to do with your life.... I have a degree .... Ive never used because I make far more doing something completely different.... I also grew up very poor and had no money for college. I didn't take out a SINGLE student loan and that was the smartest decision I ever made. I did get fafsfa but when your in your bachelor's degree portion that covers maybe 1/2 of tuition only..... I had to apply for hundreds of scholarships each semester I did get enough to cover my costs. Nothing more. I also worked full time nights as a bartender to make ends meet and pay for my school books. It was hard. I still can remember back to the stress of working full time, going to school full time all while raising 2 children (at the time). On the other hand I have friends who did take out federal loans and they are still paying them back to this day.... They've paid back what they've borrowed plus interest at this point .... And they still owe basically the amounts they borrowed. (It should be illegal to charge rates higher than credit cards all the while universities prices rise, cost of living rises and very few fields are actually worth it.,)

This skit, while not the best one of the night, was the one that left the greatest impression on me. It speaks to how culturally significant comedy can be. Every generation would have looked at this saw a different message. For me I found it kind of sad that someone who maybe had a passion for mathematics or the trades was made to feel like they should pursue modeling -no matter how unrealistic. Kind of what my generation did overhyping the realistic chance of becoming a sports star.

​@@Kyarrix Someone can be acknowledged for both intelligence and beauty, they're not mutually exclusive, there are plenty of voices in these comments already commenting on her successful performance. Plus while she's already widely known to be beautiful, doing live sketch comedy is both famously difficult and not something we've seen her pull off before--so "pleasantly surprised" is not actually damning-with-faint-praise the way you make it out to be. I mean, people were impressed that Oscar Isaac did so well on his first hosting gig, that doesn't mean they think he's some kind of dolt.

30 states provide free college tuition. Kids don’t have to have crippling debt unless they go to private schools and don’t work hard. My kids have free tuition paid for by the state lottery.

Most people in their 20s and 30s who went to college have crippling student debt whether they went to private schools or not. No amount of hard work can pay for college and cost of living. Most people do not have access to free tuition. Crippling student debt is a very serious problem in the United States and it is not caused by people going to private schools or people not working hard. It is caused because most jobs don’t pay well enough. And communities don’t give college students enough support.
