Guide: Mercedes E-class (W210 / W208 Chassis) Climate Control Removal + Light Bulb Replacement)

How to remove your climate control module on a Mercedes-Benz W210 E-class. This procedure should be identical for the 1996 and 1997 model years. This design was probably used in most mid - late 90's Mercedes vehicles such as the R129 SL class, W140 S class, W208 CLK class, and W123 E class to name a few.

Hi Mathew, just wanted to give you and your viewers an easier way to remove the climate control unit. No need for keys or switch blades just a plain old credit card. Cut two pieces off the credit card on the long side. The two pieces need to be wide enough to go into the the slots and just push them in, no need to wiggle, just push in and the lock clip will disengage.

Cool.... the mechanic wanted 150.00 to do this.... and the Part from OEM Mercedes is 1000.00 I can buy the part on e-bay for 165.00 and install myself... life is good... Thanks a lot bro.... !!!

I have a 2000 MB E320 wagon, My module numbers on the screen, bars,symbols etc are vanishing as well as the on the Radio screen ! Does anybody knows why is that happening, sometimes they show up on the screen but buttons don't work sometimes nothing shows up on the screen,it's like failing,the Radio volume sometimes it's too loud or I turn it too much and doesn't go down lots of crazy stuff happening ! I checked fuses all are fine ! Great Vid !

I'll have to check and see if my 2000 E430 has those slots but all you need is that simple key I believe they made for the radios you push them in and it locks in the clip and then pull them out with the keys easy Peezy I've gotten to the point when it comes to a do it yourself job get the right tool Like I said I'll have to check this but I am "assuming" these have the same size slots as the radios No wiggling no jerking just push the keys in and pull out the unit You always use two keys so there's no worrying just pull it out Edit: I wanted to still thank you for this video because my back light was out and I am assuming it be a PITA like various radios to replace. I am all set to call Beckman technologies and go to my parts friend at the Mercedes dealer to see what a rebuilt unit would be and it's nice to know it's so simple to replace so thank you !

Hello Friend. I have a 2001 mercedes w210. I replaced the bulb just like you showed but the new bulb doesn't light either. Whether there is a fuse for that lamp or something else can be a problem.

Hi Marko - I don't have that car anymore but I remember that I also had issues getting it to light. After moving it around inside the socket for a while, it lit. I think it has to do with the metal contact "tabs" that make contact with the light to complete the circuit. If you can find those, try pulling them out a little. Perhaps those metal tabs are not making contact.

nice job matt thank you. how far in do you push the blade? and are you applying pressure towards the unit or away from the unit to release it?

Justin Keogh I pushed the blade in until I heard a light “click”. It will take some wiggling of the blade but you will eventually get it. Then, coax one side toward you a little bit and work on the other. Too much pressure shouldn’t be needed.

Is that the only bulb in the whole thing? My screen is very dim, at night, and the buttons do not light up at all. Are there more bulbs inside the unit?

Hi Werner - surprisingly, that's the only bulb inside the whole unit. If you take it out, the whole unit will go dark. Replace it and it's as good as new.

@@matthewbaker1419 as I understand some of the dual zones actually have two bulbs that go in from the outside. I don't want to screw it up so may just wait to get a set of the keys to pull out out with. I plan to put led's in it to see if that helps. Thanks.

Call any Mercedes Benz dealership... give them your Vin # and they will give you the Radio Code. I did this 2 weeks ago !

Thank you! I think it is possible but with a lot of work. I am not familiar with the process but it looks like there is a lot of modification needed to the wiring. It also looks like the digital control has extra sensors that need to be installed. Seems like a lot more time and money than it is worth. If possible, I would try to sell the digital control and find a matching manual control for a direct replacement. Matthew, On the sun sensor in my 2002 e320 there are two wires that drop down and connect somewhere. Do you know if they attach to one of those two wiring modules that attach to the climate control module? Thanks, Nick

Good question. I couldn't find that out and went to a local junkyard. Luckily, they had the bulb for it. I would suggest checking at your local junkyard/dismantler or taking it to NAPA Auto Parts to see if they can identify it.

No, these are not interchangable. The W208 part ('98-'03) has one electronic connector on the back while the W210 ('96-'00) has two connectors. However, the removal/installation process is probably identical.

Gloves to remove an HVAC control? Are you kidding? Should have used the glove money to buy the proper removal tools and not keep breaking the plastic trim.

mikeceli This is over 20 year old plastic and is prone to cracking. Gloves ensure safe removal and prevent you from getting skin oils onto the bulb which can burn it out quicker. You are correct in that you can buy proper tools to do this. I am trying to demonstrate that this is an alternate method.

Hi Karl. I apologize for the late reply as I'm not too active on KZbin. Getting a bulb is tricky... it is nearly impossible to find them new. My suggestion would be to call local scrap yards. I'm sure several mid-90's Mercedes models use this same bulb.
