I've been stuck on Durock 3 stage 21mm 56g springs for a while now. Being triple stage, they feel even heavier than a typical 63.5g long spring found in a lot of stock switches and more akin to a 67 single stage long spring.. The big reason I like them, though, is the ultra snappy return. Makes for faster typing when double pressing keys, such as the word "school" for example. Great video. Enjoyable, informative watch!

@@MatthewEncina Ink blacks are pretty heavy stock with their 70g bottom out weight, so I'm not sure if 68g 16mm will get you noticeable results. Theoretically, both springs will feel the same once you get towards the bottom, but with the 16mm you'll start feeling more tension earlier. If you're good with the tension at the bottom, two-staged/multi staged springs would get you a more noticeable result overall. Didn't get a chance to cover these springs since they came out after the video

I haven't used box black inks yet, but looks like come with 19mm springs, and with an actuation force of 60g, I'm guessing it bottoms out around 70g (bottom-out force is what spring weight is listed at). If you don't get the tension you like, I'd recommend going for 72+g springs. Hi I need help. I do like springs with a litte higher weight. I got CIV stock blacks if i weight it on a precision scales they got 65g on 60% push through. The Aqua Kings(67g) got 55 grams. I want the middle for my new switches. Do I need to choose a 60g spring or is it bottom out force that I have to choose, like 70g equals 60g? I started with 63g spring as my first keyboard build, the first thing i notice is typing is very nice, bouncy and the key "hugs" my tip very well. but as soon as i went for gaming, I just don't have the sustainability for it. I recently got my first ever mechanical keyboard (HK Gaming GK61 with gateron optical silvers). The first thing I noticed is how heavier the switch got as I was bottoming it out. I'm definitely gonna replace the stock spring with a spring that feels more consistent throughout. The second thing I noticed is the actuation distance. That 1mm actuation distance felt wrong to me. I'm one of those people that like to hover around the actuation point while gaming. ( i don't like to bottom out a key, I also don't like to let a key fully reset.) Luckily for me, Gateron optical reds are like silvers but with a 2mm actuation and a 4mm total travel distance.

Hello guys, I need your help. I am suffering from rsi. I am trying to build a switch that is optimal for my condition. So far I have tried: gateron reds. gateron clears, and kailh speed silver switches. I got the clears thinking that the 35g spring they come with would make things better for me. But the problem is that I bottom out all the time on them, and actually made my rsi worse. Gateron reds are ok, but I still feel a lot of fatigue when I type on them. Kailh speed silvers are the best so far. The fast actuation makes a big difference for me. My fingers don't need to move a lot and it is harder for me to bottom out. My requirements are: 1. strictly linear 2. minimal effort to actuate. 3. hard to bottom out (I guess a progressive spring would help). 4. fast actuation. Any recommendations?

Love Black Inks but 70g is too heavy. Would it be wise to swap with a lighter linear spring or something like the Sprit slow spring? If slows feel heavier at the top, maybe it won’t give the feeling of being lighter when it actually is? I guess I just need to test and haven’t pulled the trigger yet. It's hard for me to say without a machine to create force curves. The 14mm will require less force at the start vs the 16mm, but I have no idea if it will change the actuation force.

depends on your personal preference, i think the spring they come with are great. if you need a lighter or heavier spring, get any tx/sprit/thicthock spring. if you want to emphasize the bump a bit more, get slow springs.

Great video, what is the difference between 2 and 3 stage KB switch springs? Just got this RK84 w/ red switches & I'm in love. However, I noticed the key caps felt just a little too light. Don't like to all of sudden type a string of a letter by accident calling my attention to how lightly I must rest my finger tips on the or how carefully I have to keep my thumbs from resting on the space bar. Its my first time using a 75% keyboard. I do type far too much to have to be so conscious of the resting point for my fingers🤣 Was thinking about it & thought well I like the switches just not the pressure to type, so I started looking for spring options.

I wouldn't use progressive on tactiles. Slows are nice for linears or tactiles, progressive are interesting on linears. It all comes down to personal preference though. Spring types are pretty deep into the weeds of custom keyboards, regular linear springs will do just fine.

Maybe, I don't have a force curve machine to measure a tx 14mm 65g vs a gat yellow spring. If they were the same bottom-out force, then yes the 14mm would feel lighter at the top. But since they're different, I'm not totally sure.

16mm is slow. The longer the spring, the more preload the spring has in the switch, resulting in a higher initial force needed to push down on the switch. Progressive springs have different density of coils along the spring, the length doesn't make a spring progressive.

Btw, I am planning on buying Glorious Pandas, I suppose those don’t need a spring replacement (?). I ask it because I am currently using an Anne Pro 2 with lubed Gateron browns and I like the actuation force of 45g. I previously had a cheap Outemu Blue switch (unlubed) keyboard and when I go back to try it, the 60g actuation feels really heavy to me. Will the 67g on the Glorious Panda be too noticeable? I thought about changing the springs for something lighter but have no idea if it’s even worth it or noticeable. 🤔 I really like tactile switches and my 2 options are Glorious Panda because they seem to have good reviews and the Cherry MX Brown because they are good, really cheap and easy to find 🤔 I want something easy to type on for long typing sessions and I remember the Outemu Blues being too heavy after some time typing. Thank you, I'm glad you are finding the videos helpful! I believe Outemu Blues bottom outs at around 60g, not actuates at 60g. That's 10g heavier than Gateron browns, which bottoms out at around 50g. Gateron brown chart-studio.plotly.com/~haata/100 Outemu blue chart-studio.plotly.com/~haata/135 I'm actually surprise Gateron browns bottom out at 50g, that's really light. I think Cherry browns bottom out at 60g, did not realize Gateron browns were 10g lighter. In your case, you may want to consider getting 60g/62g springs for the Glorious Pandas. They will still be heavier than the Gateron browns. You can also consider getting 55g springs, some people like them for tactiles, but most people don't go that light for tactiles. Here's a review about 62g/65g/67g Zealios switches and how the different spring weight compares www.keychatter.com/2015/08/19/review-project-zealio-switches/ But one thing to keep in mind is that the bump on the Glorious Pandas is more rounded than the Zealios v1 and Gateron browns, so that will play a factor in the switch feel. You're going to have to go over a bigger bump as shown in this graph at around the 0.45mm mark. I love the Gateron Yellow of KS3 which said to have bottomout of 60g. But when I used Gateron INK Red which said has the same 60g bottomout, they felt very different on bottom out. The Ink red still feels lighter. Yes I know that Yellow has slower spring (50g actuation, while ink red is 45g actuation), but I do think either the yellow maybe has like 62g ish bottomout, or the ink red bottomout is only less than 60g. Now I'm confused which spring t o buy 60g or 62g lmao

the yellow springs are longer, so they are more compressed in the switch, which makes them feel heavier. between 60g and 62g, you wont really feel a difference. but between a 14mm spring (standard size) vs 16mm ("slow springs", but i think yellow actually uses 15mm), you will.

I'm planning on making/modding an ultra-quiet keyboard, and I'm thinking of using linear switches with heavy progressive springs. It makes sense in theory, and hopefully it might mitigate the upstroke sound compared to using something like a 100g linear spring, right?

That's interesting, never thought about using heavy progressive springs to reduce the upstroke sound. That makes sense, but for me I wouldn't want to use such a heavy progressive spring since I always bottom out. I think it you should consider getting silent switches for an ultra-quiet keyboard. There are some good choices these days for quiet switches: Boba U4 for tactile, silent alpacas for linears. Or my personal favorite for a silent linear: MX Zilents (cherry silent stem in a Zeal/aliaz housing)

First of all forgive me on my lack of knowledge when it comes to switches. I just spray lubed gateron yellow switches and they feel really smooth. I might switch them out though because they feel really stiff to me (50g operating force and 60 g bottom out). I've used Razer's red opto mechanical switches and they were a dream to use. Can anyone recommend linear (not slow) springs that feel similar? I don't know the specs unfortunately. Or perhaps springs similar to gateron red switches? Thank you.

I'm not sure if it'll be similar, but sounds like you'll like springs at around 55g bottom-out force (60g max). You can buy TX springs in 55g, 50g, and even 45g (but 45g is pretty damn light) www.us.txkeyboards.com/products/tx-springs

Great video on the springs! Was recently looking into aftermarket ones lately because my Drop Holy Pandas had a ton of crunch even with lube. I swapped for the 14mm 65g TX and I agree with what you said. The tactility and top half of the press just feels too light now. The spring crunch is entirely gone though. I think there’s some noise from the leaf still, maybe because they’re so tactile? I do wish I could find a stock 1:1 replacement just higher quality. Maybe the Durock 67g? We’re the Spirit Slow springs you used the “Slow Extreme” on their site? And have you given their MX Supreme springs a shot (wondering how long they are as well)?

Yup, its the Slow Extreme. Haven't tried their MX Supreme, but I believe it's their standard linear spring. I haven't compared the Drop stock spring & Durock 67g so I can't say, but the TX 16mm 65g would make the top half feel heavier (they also come in 67g).

i love gateron springs.. i'm addicted to reds.. found a seller on Aliexpress that sells 45g springs.. i compared them with sum of my Gateron Milky reds and they are identical.. So now i ordered two more packs.. i already modded sum "OUTEMU Silent Forest" that had 62G springs to these nice 45G springs..and typing on it now.. really really nice.. i also have Spritt springs ..and i just ordered / joined a GB for a board and was thinking about adding sum Spritt springs but there's no deed these are so good and affordable.. For now that's my springs. hahahah

Man I love your video, really good tips. I recently bought a gateron clear 35g and is too light, first time on a ortolinear split blank keycaps, it's making me miss everything. I think I will go for a Sprit 60g slow spring...but I'm really curious with the complex spring, it's too light in the beginning that make you miss click when rest your fingers over the keys?

Thanks! And that would depend on the person, but yes that can be an issue. For complex/progressive springs, I go for 68g+ since I'm used to 62g-65g on other springs.

@@jimmynguyen973 good tips! Honestly I liked my old mx red, and maybe something just a bit lighter than him would be good. Because of this I though on the complex 63.5g...but in the end I will go.with the 63.5g slow, I'm already missing too many clicks with gateron clears...better increase the force

This was super informative! Between sprit slow curved, Thick Thock DL, and Gateron yellow spring which one is your favorite?

All 3 are pretty close, but I would say Thic Thock DL, then Sprit Slow, then Gat yellow. But Thic Thock DL is pretty hard to get ahold of, so the Sprit Slow is a great choice.

Excellent video liked and subbed! I have just ordered some durock linear 67 looking to get some tx 16mm springs, I haven't got the springs yet need to order it all at the same time. Shall I got with the 16mm 67g springs? Also are stock durock springs similar to 14 or 16mm?

Order the 16mm if you think you'll like a slow-curved spring better. The durock springs are similar to 14mm, and they're still good springs.

Came across this this video, was informative, like your advice as in don't worry so much about the differences and just get the actuation force you want. Have you tried a Topre or Topre clone board yet. If so the thocky sound and near silent typing ... is that achievable with mechanicals?

Love your content, your explanations are so helpful. I am looking to try tx 16mm springs and usually like 67g linear springs on all my switches. Do you think a 62 or 65g tx 16mm spring might feel more comfortable to try?

Glad you found it helpful! If you're used to 67g, 62g might feel a bit light for you. I would go for the 65g.

What if you reversed the insertion of the progressive/complex springs on the tactiles? Would it make the bump more pronounced assuming that the strength needed to press the switch would be highest at the beginning of the key press?

You can’t say the stiffness of a spring gets increased with adding turns to it, that’s kinda wrong. The stiffness gets increased by increasing density of turn, this can be done by adding more turns into the same amount of length. Stiffness also can get increased by using thicker wire or using another more stuff material. All in all a good vid although your physiks and how you explained a lot of it were wrong or missleading.
