Guide to Freeing Dots from Strokes in Illustrator
Learn how to break dots, dashes and ovals out of strokes in Illustrator to make them individual filled shapes. Some people suggest you have to use Flatten Transparency to do this - you can - but you don't have to! And that's the important part of this video - you will learn what happens when you try to use Expand Appearance to break dots out of strokes in Illustrator - why it doesn't appear to work and how to make it work. It makes perfect sense to me that you have to expand it twice. The first time you expand, it will separate the fill from the line. The second time, it will expand the dots as well. However, If you only have a dotted line with no fill, the separation of line and fill is not obvious/visible in the same way as it would be with a colored fill. So you might get the impression you have to make an extra step that seems unneccesary.

I am so glad you can 'see' the problem/solution - well done - you obviously have a really good handle on how Illustrator operates. I don't know how many KZbinrs use the Flatten transparency option which is just not logical to me. I thought this was a great learning exercise - and another reminder to keep an eye on the Layers panel so you understand what is going on in your file.

Nice one, however, I encourage my students to always keep these dots as strokes because of the ease with which the sizes can be changed. I refer to this "Math"

Good point Joe! But if you do need them out as separate thoughts then this is the way to do it.
