Awesome! I have two other methods you might want to consider. 1. Instead of using a hue saturation adjustment to colorize the dots, just drop out the whites and make sure you end up transparency as you did. Then apply a color overlay layer style and pick any color you want. This will ensure you get no white fringing left over from the background and you can change the color at any time in the layer style. 2. This is perhaps the fastest way. After making the black and white halftone effect, go to the channels and ctrl click on thumbnail of one of the channels. Invert your selection (Shift+Ctrl+I) and make a solid color fill layer. Pick any color you want for your dots. No background, no fringing, and you can change the color at any time.

You are a legend. You cut right to the chase, and produce videos I save for reference in my workflow. All clear, and the reasons for your steps are explained. Great! Small request --- a piece on color values if you haven't already done one. Specifically, as related to this halftone work. If I make a gradient sphere filled from red to light pink and then I convert it to a halftone, won't it appear lighter on a white background and darker on a black bg? We know that it will. So, I'm very interested in what the best workflow for getting color values right once converted to halftone -- on white versus black backgrounds, too. But also, what if I put that same gradient to-color-halftone on, say, an orange background? Here again, I find I can do the math, make mutliple files and experiment until I it's right, but I sure as heck don't know an efficient workflow for it. I guess . . . I guess I'd carefully make some swatches of the colors in my original design, then desaturate the whole thing, then make a halftone, then go in and mask out the white, then paint my original colors . . . No wait, that doesn't work. Maybe . . . make the color halftone first, THEN make swatches of the colors, THEN paint them? Even if I figure this out for myself, I'm not gonna know I did! See . . . Illustrator doesn't play nice with halftones, so if I want them to be nice round dots I have to figure how to bring gradient designs from Illusrator to Photoshop effectively -- and in as few steps as possible, Ideally. As you can see your wisdom on color values and halftones is much needed. Just take any color gradient bearing Illustrator design and bring it over to Photoshop, converting it to a color halftone there, and preserving the perceptual values of the colors against a a variety of background colors. That's it, in a nutshell. Hopefully you know what I'm describing - I don't know the right words for it. Does Photoshop consider the background color and color values when making the halftone, or just take a value map and make the halftone as if the background doesn't count? I suspect the latter. I dunno you say it's easy to make it a color halftone later . . . but Is it really? Exactly the same value as in the orignal? My problem is I can't trust the colors on my monitor, that's what, so I need the formula/steps. I also don't have (much) artistic eye. I usually just have something I want to say! Or type! Please forgive the rant -- I've been searching on this specific topic for a long time, never quite finding the answers I'm looking for in an easy-ish "recipe." You seem a good one to ask! Rock on! Thanks for being so committed and being utterly amazing at it!

Actually I use both. A desktop PC for my daily production work and a Mac laptop for checking things and for when I travel.
