Guide to Vanilla Base Building (DayZ)

I've sunk nearly 600 hours into DayZ but never learned base building. I took a spontaneous interest in it and I'm glad I found your tutorial. Couple helpful hints for people who really want to build vanilla base building and who are new to DayZ SA or building. First, as stated, always have pliers and wire if you're building your first fence/gate if you're building inside a house/building as stated here, you'll be trapped otherwise 😅 Second, when shoveling or hoeing in your "base" gate/fence, as soon as your character stops shoveling and the 2 pillars pop up.... jump.... it'll bypass you stopping, bending over to pick nothing up off the ground, and pretending to do something....it cancels the ending animation, which saves you tons of time and potentially your life. 3rd, never block your dial lock, it's always on the right post if you're standing inside the gate, if they haven't changed it, and you can't see your lock, you won't be able to unlock your gate.... terrible. Lastly, if you're building in an official or straight vanilla server without the "build anywhere" enabled inside the server comfig (official and pure vanilla won't have this enabled, some "vanilla" community servers will enable this)... you're going to have a really, really hard time trying to build inside most houses and a lot of buildings in general.... you'll even have trouble building in the woods if the ground isn't completely flat....it never used to be like this, you used to be able to build anywhere, having your fence/gate and watchtower clip through the walls and ceiling to be able to build how you like and have it more secure, and you used to be able to stack fences and gates 2-3-4 high, same with watchtowers....but unless you're on a community server which has that option toggled, you can't. Also, one of my trade secrets if building with vanilla, but on a community server that allows build anywhere.... using just the "base" fence, just the 2 poles, and then adding a camo net, could be used for many things.... I used to use them as window blinds and also for hiding certain things that could be easily seen otherwise in the woods.... sometimes you can still use them for certain things, but not the way you used to (unless build anywhere is enabled)

Hey Johnny , I’m trying to build inside of a house but when I try to put fence kit down no matter where I move it it won’t let me initiate the fence kit? I think the roof is blocking it potentially. So o decided to build a shelter kit in the woods and can’t hardly find a spot where it will let me even put the shelter kit down ! Is there a way to force it and set the fence kit / shelter kit ?

@@KZbinologistD nope, that's that pesky/utterly ridiculous change the dumbass devs did awhile back, that's how it is on all official servers, and some vanilla community servers without that "build anywhere" either enabled through the server side settings, or using a mod to bypass it. Without it enabled, any "kit" you use, fence, watchtower, flag, will need to be flat and completely unstructured, if it hits the ceiling, hits a wall, is on too much of an angle (ground angle).... it'll refuse to let you place anything....it was one of the stupidest things the devs ever changed.... I could potentially see it if they added extra pieces, like straight doorway sized, well, door kits and stuff that would actually fit, but they didn't... I mean seriously, in what zombie apocalyptic movie ever did people build in the woods or in an open area? They board up houses..... the devs are ridiculous and have zero creativity or idea what they're doing. You'll literally need to find a flat, unstructured area to even place a makeshift tent/shelter (you can't lock tents or shelters) The only other thing, if you're playing on a community server, occasionally certain servers turn off the ability to build bases and place certain things, usually those types of servers will say "stashes and tents only" or just stashes.... there's not that many of those servers, but one that actually does that is extremely popular, just in case you're on that server.

@@johnnygeorgopoulos4072 thanks for the info . If I put a tent down could I build a gate in front of it? Or could someone just destroy the tent to access the loot and by pass the gate? And I spent most my time on community servers. Built a lot of cool stuff and a bunch of different bases. Too many cheaters and admin abuse so I’m playing on official and just now experiencing what it’s like to build without the build anywhere mode attached

@@KZbinologistD you can typically put a gate in front of say, a car or large tent, but if you're on official, people can easily shoot or even melee the tent to destroy it much quicker than destroying the gate. Strange you had issues with community servers, there's some really good vanilla community servers without admins running around acting like idiots (most community servers don't have idiot admins, but it seems you found one of the rare ones that do lol).... check out Spaggies servers, he's got a few for different maps, no mods, straight vanilla typically, and they're popular. If you're on official, unfortunately there are cheaters there, because official servers don't have any admins watching for them and being able to ban them.... typically you'll only find cheaters on official lol. And I was going to suggest (if you just want to hide loot), to just make wood crates, find a small obscure pond, fill the crate and drop it within the water level of standing so that it's hidden, and still accessible with your inventory... that's what most people do if they're not building bases, or, you can get a sea chest, dry bag, or a pot, fill them with loot, wait until about an hour or less until server restart, then chop a tree down and bury your container at the base of where the tree was, it'll grow back upon server restart, and "nobody" will be able to see the dirt mound.... can also bury them in certain sand, like sandboxes, and it won't leave a dirt mound.... only issue....if you're on official, again, cheaters can use ESP and be able to see a stash. Only way to really not encounter a cheater on official or have them find your stuff, is to play on the lower pop official servers, the full ones typically get idiots.

TY VM dude, been playing for a couple years but never built anything Vanilla until just now. Had loads of nails and codelocls buried, and even some storage too. Very very grateful I may have sorta sage storage now (it's fairly well hidden). Gonna now attempt the new and updated Deer Isle 5.3 quest O.o wish me luck!

@@rucifail I'm on a PVE only server that's designed for building bases. I currently have about 10 watch towers stacked on top of each other creating my own super tall tower. Then I'm building a big base at the top of that lol

Nice little channel you got. Played Dayz on and off for years and only just adventuring into maybe building a base because i killed some dude who had 5 packs of nails. You should create a base building series more indepth, because ill tell you what, there arnt many good videos to show people the ropes. One main ones expect all players to be advanced in the first place. Maybe a video on where to find the tools and matierials and some example bases.

Hey bro I made a huge treck and already set up my base found the perfect house middle of nowhere in Livonia but it’s one of those brown wood cabin houses with 2 doors and for some reason I literally can’t place the gate inside anywhere literally anywhere and I got all the shit made the 2 hour treck there anything I can do or am I shit out of luck and need to find a new house. Really would appreciate help been looking for answer for ages

If it is an official server or a console server you may be out of luck. If it a community PC server, try contacting the admins, they usually have a Discord or similar so you can reach out to them. If you mean like dayz.fandom.com/wiki/Large_Cabin_House then I've definitely built a gate on the second door and hid crates under the bed on a community server!

Did the just change the building specs recently ? I’m seeing comments across the web talking about how difficult it is to build and that is making sense why I’ve searched different servers and not finding any bases to raid :/ I also have tried making a base inside of houses . Spent hours gathering supply’s just to get there and not be able to set a fence kit

Building on official servers can be hard in a lot of buildings. There was a wipe on official servers recently, so that may be why you are finding less bases. I don't think they've changed anything recently though.

It can be very challenging, that's for sure. Having a car helps but that's a completely different problem.

Finding a ride, either one of the cars or those big trucks are very good at moving material it has slots for wood logs, planks, barrels, crates and also metal sheets.

Vanilla base building is so terrible unless you enable at least, build anywhere, if you don't have that enabled inside the server config, it's pretty much useless unless you build in the woods or know exactly which buildings and houses can be specifically used without it blocking your fence/gate kits. It's pretty pathetic after this many years, we still only have 2 items for base building, a fence and watchtower..... it's terrible. And don't get me started on those terribly pathetic dial locks. The devs really need to do something with base building, but seeing as it's been this many years, and they've removed more base building items then we started out with, I don't see them adding to it or improving it...ever. For reference, they removed the hesco barriers which were extremely useful for no reason, they also removed the ability to climb on barrels for building, along with that last one, they also (in vanilla) removed the ability to place building kits(fence/watchtower) where you wanted them and removing the ability for fences and watchtowers to clip through terrain and structures, so you can't build in houses or buildings, and lastly, they removed the ability to stack fences and watchtowers, which used to be the only way you could even build a "secure" base whatsoever.....yes, you can revert those building changes inside the server config, but not all servers enable it, and you won't know until you do the work and try..... it's just absolutely pathetic, the entire system. Rust and Scum have everything for their base building, if we had something similar, modular base building, but it looked like "DayZ" obviously, otherwise, there's really no reason to build in Official/Vanilla.

I think it's all part of the game really. If they improved base building then more people would build and possibly change how the game is played currently. Part of what makes this go so much fun is its jankiness.
