I was at this show. Flew home Monday night, spent all of Tuesday depressed about how my life had peaked. This weekend was the most fun I will ever have in my life.

Bob definitely has perfect pitch, if there was any doubt...he counts off half these songs with no instrumental accompaniment, and then comes in on the exact right pitch without any issue every time. Pretty amazing

Yes, his amazing voice really lifts the band into the stratosophere...

Don't know if it's perfect, but it's great...until he has had one too many beers. Granted, it seems he can drink a LOT before he reaches that stage, but reach it he does from time to time.

It's easy to listen to the bum notes and see the dadrock image and struggle to hide a smirk, but the fact is Bob - along with Tobin and the other various band members from their early 90s phase - had an incredible effect on 'indie' music. They really pushed boundaries with lo-fi and combining melody with experimental noise/mixtape.
@christopher9152 Жыл бұрын
Yes. Everyone who knows indie music who is older than 30 or so knows that already.

I was there for this. To hear a stadium singing along to everything was surreal. Something I wish every GBV fan could have experienced.

I just stayed at the Palms in Las Vegas recently. The gentleman checking me in asked had I ever stayed at the Palms before. I replied. "not since Matador at 21". He informed that he was too young to have been there at the time. I was a little sad because, it made me feel old, and that, he had no reference for what I was talking about. And what I was talking about was probably one of the most significant live events ever. The Matador at 21 lineup will never be repeated. I should cite the lineup, but I'm lazy. Standouts in my hazy recollection would be Chavez, Jon Spencer, Fucked Up and GBV. Anyway, I'd never really loved GBV until I saw them at that show. They killed it. If you're a fan, you'll have your opinions of this. I don't care, loved it. Much thanks to "misleadingsilhouette" for sharing this. An absolutely wonderful evening with GBV and many fond memories
@marcschneider44325 жыл бұрын
It was wonderful all around. I would add Sonic Youth, who only did a few shows after Vegas and before breaking up a year later, to the list of standout performances.

Mitch is awesome and his amped up entrance at 5:20 is so great. No other guitarist in any of the other lineups had that nasty tone that he blasted. Miss it live.

There's the classic rock cannon that's acknowledged by all, or at least most and there's the shadow cannon to that, which GBV (Robert Pollard mainly) have created besides, known to GBV fans... pretty awesome really.

I'd enjoy this more if the guitars weren't so out of tune and cutting in and out. I know sloppiness is part of the charm but this is a bit much. They were way better when I saw them twice a few months after this.
@markeggins8902 жыл бұрын
This is the best line up, as they made their best records and they look like a real band of individuals rather than Bob and younger hired hands which is ok but not as fun...I don't give a stuff about their drinking or if it is a bit out of tune...sounds great to me...
