I owned a 182K for 25 years. Every time I took off into low IFR, my last thought as I started to add power was "Hard on the instruments." I took that thought from a Sporty's IFR video and it served me very well. It can be something of a disorienting shock if you take off in your accustomed VFR mindset. By starting the scan before you ever start rolling, it makes the transition much, much easier. Nice video.

You earned your pay today! Heavy crosswinds on both TO and Landing...really appreciate the professionalism you bring to flying..NO sloppiness or or casual indifference. Every flight is precise and tight. That's how my ex USAF instructor worked me though the instrument flying process. It saved my life because my very FIRST flight with fresh instrument rating was exactly like this flight...turbulence, crosswinds, icing and visibilities so low that I wound going into KLAX and at DH, caught enough runway lighting to duck under and land. With all the other LA basin airport below IFR minimums...wisely decided to stay on the ground until the storm passed the next day.

@@GuidoWarnecke you're absolutely right. Fuel is a nightmare for most recreational pilots nowadays. I pair it with a VR headset, and a Turtle beach velocity one yoke/throttle combo, which has the Cessna type engine, mixture, and prop controls alongside the standard levers. It makes for an enjoyable experience, but it just isn't quite an equal to the genuine article. I subscribed, of course, and wish you fair skies in the future

@@gaguy1967 I value your opinion. In commercial flying you cannot choose your day and the weather. In some occasions you have to do also flights that are not comfortable. A big difference is however to do flights that intentionally will exceed the limits of the aircraft and the pilot. That is something I would never do. As a side note, I appreciate comments under the clear name of the author. Thank you. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido
@randominternet55863 жыл бұрын
@@gaguy1967 Thousands of flights a day are flown on schedule and with a need to get somewhere, through weather much worse than this. That alone is not the cause of the accident. Get there itis is a slang term for plan continuation bias or when a pilot is determined to reach the destination beyond the limits of pilot / aircraft or not taking into account changes in conditions that result in very dangerous flying. Normally the plane is overloaded with pax and bags, the density altitude is bad, weather marginal etc etc - but you still fly. This is a pilot only flight so aircraft performance should be good. It wasn't clear if there was retrofit anti-ice, but in the face of icing pilot adjusted promptly to descend all the way down to 7,000. A nice glass panel. An experienced pilot who planned with bad weather in mind (seemed to know cross wind limits which can be a gotcha). Riskier? Sure. But it didn't strike me as way out of bounds. When your friends show up with heavy bags and you don't leave them behind because you'd be overweight - THAT is get there itis and VERY easy to have that cause a problem.

Enjoyed this video very much. I fly a Cessna 172, manufactured in 1979. So, none of the "bells and whistles" you enjoy. This is a great example of the workload involved as PIC of a small aircraft, even with all the fancy new gadgets. I encountered icing one time around Ogden, Utah. That will get the heartrate going as much as a hairy X-wind landing. Thank you for all your efforts.

Hi Lawrence, many thanks for you comment. Whatever aircraft we fly: it is fun! And you can do bad things in ANY aircraft. Have fun in your 172. great aircraft. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido

I admire your professionalism and calmness, I’m a PPL holder and I would still be at your departure airport drinking coffee and waiting for the weather to clear

so would I. nothing wrong with staying on the ground if you dont have to be up in the air.

Thank you. Enjoy you PPL and any flying you feel comfortable with. Consider starting your IFR training, or at least take a lesson with an instructor. Great fun and by far not as difficult as you think hit is. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido

Why are you flying that junk box into known icing conditions?
@GuidoWarnecke2 жыл бұрын
Hello, a) a C182 is not a junk box b) there was no known icing in the forecast. You are correct that one should not commence a flight into know icing in a non FIKI certified aircraft. Happy Landings, Capt. Guido

I Iove flying in IMC conditions. To me that's what makes flying fun, and keep honing your skills. After 44 years of flying. Iam still learning, when I step into a plane, or watch videos such as this. Never stop learning!

Thank you! That’s the good thing about aviation: we never stop learning. I learn on every flight. Small things, big things. Thanks for comment and Happy Landings , Capt. Guido

When you're watching someone that can (almost) make that kind of flight (those conditions) look easy and effortless, you're watching someone that is performing at the highest level. To be your best you must have 100% confidence in your skills and capabilities, but you also must have the skills and capabilities that are worth placing complete confidence in. Flying is very safe for the well-trained, skilled and prepared, but it can also be extremely unforgiving to those who aren't. Thank you for the videos.
