Follow me on a flight from Iceland to Greenland in a single engine Mooney aircraft
This is part of a series filmed on a ferry flight from Germany to the USA.
ATC is recorded and additional information of the flight is provided by subtitles and photos.
The flight was conducted for A2B, a very professional and reputable ferry flight company.

Your comments questions are as usual highly appreciated.

Wonderful vid. I'm presuming an Ovation 3. What would be typical cruise TAS and fuel burn? How many gallons from Iceland...and they fuel cost? I'm still in the dreaming phase...

+david barker Thank you, David. It was an Ovation 2. Photos here: flightaware.com/photos/aircraft/N196GX I did 170 KTAS at FL160 @ just over 10 gallons per hour. Down lower you can do 180-190 with more fuel flow. On a ferry flight you need longer range. Happy Landings, Guido

Another great video! I experience a problem with the video (freezes without KZbin loading spinner) right before you rotate off the runway in Iceland. What does supplemental oxygen mean? Pressurized cockpit?
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 8 жыл бұрын
+Epic Derezzed You carry along pressurized oxygen, either in a handheld bottle or in an installed system in the aircraft. You breathe this oxygen either via a face mask or a canula through the nose. The air at 18,000ft still contains oxygen (about 1/2 compared to sea level), so the oxygen from the bottle is only "supplemental" to restore the normal levels. Happy Landings, Guido

Quality of videos just gets better! Does that aircraft model have any de-icing system or do you absolutely have to wait for clear weather?
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. No de-icing / anti-icing equipment on this aircraft except the pitot heat. So you have to say out of icing conditions. That means no clouds if the temperatures are below zero, in general. Not all clouds produce icing even in subzero temperatures. Most do. Happy landings, Guido

Hi Guido, Do you think it would be possible to do this job of ferrying people's aircraft across the globe with a PPL with IFR qualifications (because ATPL's are skyhigh expensive)? And do you have tips for young people trying to get involved in jobs like ferry-flying? Mit freundliche Grüssen, Raphaël.
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Raphaël, if you want to get paid for the job you need a commercial license. I do not want to discourage you on ferry flying but this is nothing to build time and experience. It is the other way around: you apply your flight hours and experience that you have gained in other jobs. I know of different examples but consider this as unsafe. Happy Landings, Guido
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Raphaël, i order to get compensated for your work, you need a commercial license. Otherwise a PPL with instrument rating is sufficient. Ferry flying - unfortunately - is not a job to build hours. You build hours in other flying jobs and apply the experienced gained there int he ferry flying. It can be very challenging at times. Happy Landings, Guido

+KT Chan You have a good point here. There are a lot of obstacles around runway 25 and it is also down slope. Also when coming from the East, you have to clear high terrain first and a straight in approach runway 25 may be difficult, especially in a "clean" airplane like the Mooney. 7 kts are still in the limits. It needs to be weight up. Happy Landings, Guido

What happens if the oxygen fails at 10,000 feet? Do you have Co2 alarms to alert you before you fall unconscious?
@GuidoWarnecke
@GuidoWarnecke 8 жыл бұрын
+Ace Sul I do not have a COalarm. The oxygen system has a flow indicator that I check regularly. At altitudes up to 18,000ft it all not too critical, above 18,000ft it can be critical within minutes. Happy Landings, Guido

+Ace Sul one has to be a good bit higher for things to become dangerous....e.g. there are a number of ski villages in USA higher than 11k' and a person just arrived might get a little head-achey but soon becomes acclimated to height, thin air and lower bar. pressure. I owned a mtn cabin in NM that was @ about 12k and we'd arrive @ night and by next AM were feeling fine. The 10k rule was enacted for lots of safety margin.

Hi John, I lived in South Africa for many years, 5500ft elevation. I could fly up to 13,000ft without oxygen with no problems. No living in the USA at sea level, 10,000ft is my limit, especially at night. Happy Landings, Guido
