I'm still surprised when side characters act like people, with brains. Like appreciating when someone saves your life and trusting that they're then onto something breaking open a previously undiscovered sub-floor of the dungeon. There’s plenty darker as well as some grim out there, if you don’t like wholesome, you just got have to look for it, but some low hanging fruit in various shades of dark, in no particular order: “goblin slayer”, “Redo of Healer”, “berserk”, “when they cry”, “The hero, who laughs while walking the path of Vengeance a second time” there’s lots more.
