@@WestonTeli which is going to happen to any existing game launching for the first time on the platform. Those reviews would still be relevant for the most part, especially if you think about a vet who has been playing the game since launch letting people know that the game had kept them all those years and is still enjoying the game. People like to hear that. And there are a lot of fair and in depth reviews I've seen on there. So I wouldn't discount the very positive review it has due to reviews from vet players as some games that have a bad rep that go to launch on to steam later still would carry that as well (cough cough Bless cough cough) which can help other players decide whether or not to give the game a try.

For some comparison figures, ESO had around 1.9k average with a peak of 3.1k during its first month on Steam, and FFXIV had around 3.6k average with a peak of 7.4k during its first month on Steam. For GW2 to get 8k within its first _week_ is honestly really good, especially considering how little effort ANet put into actually advertising this. Imagine how high it'd be if they paid for advertisement on the front page of Steam. EDIT: Just made it to the part of the video where he showed the FFXIV Steam population near its launch on Steam. I'll leave my comment up since it also adds some ESO numbers into the mix, but yeah.

Just to let you know my perspective, the steam launch of gw2 put the game I hadn't played for 6 years back in my mind, plus some friends started playing for the first time because of the launch. Two good reasons for existing players to start playing as a result of the steam launch. So I definitely think this launch reignited existing players' interest in the game, besides attracting lots of brand new players.

I'm one of the Steam newbies. I've been a many years solo player, and what few MMO's I had played all left a bitter taste in my mouth either with the paywalls, the dungeon gear grind, or what have you. GW2 is honestly the first MMO that made me want to do group content and team up with other players. It's a different atmosphere compared to other games I've played. Just finished the main story and loving it so far. IMO the biggest difference between before and after Steam is that Steam has a lot of eyeballs. I wouldn't have known about it except someone in ESO (which I was already growing weary of) commented in chat that it was free on Steam about a week ago. I said at that price, it's worth giving a try. So yeah. I think I'll keep playing it for a very long time.

Hello!! As a Veteran Player I wanted to point out some of us are not just going back to lower level areas to help or take away from the lower leveled players. Because we get new quests and achievements added to the game later and alot of those require us veterans to go back to the lower level content stuff. In one of my achievements I had to go back to Queensdale to do a open world event for an item drop. So Veterans are sometimes required to go back to the level 1-30 areas. I can say though the community is very open and friendly and a Veteran is encouraged to assist folks at the lower levels even our achievement system rewards us for communicating or assisting in fights/rezzing players. Which can be overwhelming for MMO players who are not accustomed to that way of playing.

The twitch drops were the biggest part of Steam launch, but I also feel like it could easily have been simply part of the ten year celebration, with nothing to do with Steam. It feels to me more like "lets do the launch now while everything else is happening." Steam itself feels lackluster, with no sales to entice people to buy, no steam achievements or cards, and no advertising (that I could find, and if you need to try hard to find an ad, it's not really an ad). It feels like they just slapped it on there. Not having even a small sale seems like a mistake. Yes they lose revenue even without a sale on, but 5000 people paying $20-$75 is better than 1000 paying $30-$100. People like sales. It's a little bit of a letdown when they were saying "you can only launch on steam once, and we want to do it right" I think the blame may lay with NCSoft more then ANet, I don't know how that all works. At least the Steam forums have chilled out now. The flood of trolls the first few days was insane. Also of note, roughly 50% of negative reviews are one-liners from people angry they couldn't link their old acct. Another 10-20% saying they can't play it for various reasons. (why review a game you've never played?) That saddens me, otherwise it might be in the overwhelmingly positive category.

I started playing recently too (a week before steam launch, funny enough) and am having a blast. I can't believe I waited so long to try GW2! My 2nd day in game, an experienced player gave me a mithril inventory box and some gold, that was incredibly nice :D They made it a fun little treasure hunt of sorts, to find them in a hidden location in the Grove. I think that's a great way to help new players like me. :) I actually loved the crowded starter areas too - it was exciting to see everyone's flashy appearances and mounts. It gave me new goals to work toward! And its been really fun going to random world bosses and seeing these massive zergs fight them. I've just picked up the expansions and honestly am just loving the whole experience so far.

i think not having new content during the steam release was a perfect time to launch. The steam release caused an influx of new players, me being one of them. I was easily overwhelmed by the vast amount of content, and I'm glad I didn't have to deal with all the 'extra extra' content from a new expansion on top of that. Plus the influx of new people really populated some of the older areas so it was nice to play what feels like 'how guild wars is supposed to be' with active maps and events happening.

I tried GW2 before and quit. But this time it stuck with me and I've already yolo'd on the expansion set. Players have been crazy welcoming and super kind running world bosses or giving me help on the overwhelming content. The thing I love about this game is that it just says "yes" to you all the time. Wanna craft. Go for it, here's xp and a pathway to do that. Wanna do the story, hit it, here's a ton of items. Wanna just explore maps and do events, whelp, have a ton of equipment so your bags are stuffed. All of it happens in a reasonable time frame and is pretty, constantly throwing new things at you and likely with a bunch of different ways to do it.

Just a correction: Not all of the players shown in SteamDB are new players, it IS possible to play with your ArenaNet account in the Steam launcher, you just need to pass the "-provider Portal" flag (launch option) to it and you'll have the normal launcher. I can also safely add that there are hundreds of these players, specifically, the Linux community that plays the game, because running on Steam has been way more smoothly for a plethora of reasons that aren't worth covering in this comment. However, there's for sure players that are on Windows and are playing in Steam due to that flag being available, we just can't tell how many.

I wanted to upgrade from free to premium, so I just bought HoT and PoF without paying much attention to the store at the time. Realised I could have gotten the bundle altogether, cheaper and easier. Steam isn't adjusting the price based on what you already own, so once you own one piece of content, you can only purchase it as a gift. Is what it is. Either way, enjoying the game.

oh and biggest thing that i love about GW2 is classes. GW2 classes have clear identity and unique feel to them. each feels like a separate whole unit, not a blend of things. And if we compare them to ESO and WoW. ESO classes are not unique. they are a template for you build, that is all, each of these classes has like 1-2 very unique abilities and that's it, the rest is just same abilities with different names that put out the same dps. only thing that matters is how you going to build it, and at the end, all builds are pretty much the same and classes within those builds play absolutely the same. If we take WoW classes. They lost their identity long ago, now each class is just a mix and match of of abilities, which made classes blend too much. they barely, just barely have their class identity. mean while i agree that major buffs like bloodlust and instant res should be part of more than one class, simply to make more viable comps for raids. but blending beyond that is bad. Basically WoW in old days had a more "rock, paper, scissors" balance and classes felt unique. today WoW is just an RPG version of call of duty, where every one runs pretty much the same build and class you choose to play has no advantages based on it's architecture alone, over any other class. so essentially they became more of a template like ESO classes. Problem with such structure, where every one plays the same build and every class has same gameplay style, is because it's similar to arena shooters (like quake champions). average players have no chance of playing most of it, because they are in constant disadvantage of the pros. who in turn have more time to play, to practice, get their timings and reaction in place. meanwhile average dudes jsut want to play for fun, no compete for the e-pin.

I started playing Gw2 at release (even have the preorder ring) I got to level cap and then got sorta lost interest since it's not standard mmo fare and everything felt aimless. Came back for HoT and never completed it, got stuck in Auric Basin.... I bet all that sounds bizarre but it's sorta how my time with the game went. It had a lot of things I loved and a lot of things that felt like the devs were going against the grain just to be different like no traditional questing or quest-chain like micro stories, everything was LIVE all the time, the collection system to find/do tasks and get certain rewards was weird, I remember one to collect spoons? But that was early Gw2. Even though I don't play it I sing the praises of the game for what it DID do right and what I learned it got amazingly right (mounts, duh) after I'd quit. Gw2 was what made me love personal accountability in mmos. Dodging, self-heals, limited hotbars but solid build options to find your niche within your class and show your skill expression. PvP was perfect. (WvW less so, TBH I've always seen it as an AoE nightmare with small skirmishes never being important so it just felt like zerg V. zerg and elementalists destroyed everything.) Clicked the vid because honestly I don't really understand what it means for it to be on Steam? Just means u don't have to use ANet launcher or website? Idk to be totally honest I'm amazed Gw2 is even still alive with the current state of the mmo genre, it's a miracle and I'm glad for it since they take the risk of trying new things others can learn from. (Again, mounts. Even WoW's starting to steal the idea.) I will say this though to veteran players: Every time I come back to the game to give it a try, vets ruin old-content public events by zerging or spamming blast might and buffs and it couldn't be more evident that the community that's held onto the game has been running on this treadmill so long that y'all got it down to a science and now new players or old but lost players are roped along into a pace of combat that is unnatural. Hard to tell if you're even contributing when everything's exploding. Slow down and smell the flowers. Show off cool spots and jumping puzzles and such but don't decimate the mobs kiddos are tryna enjoy fighting with your meta builds or blind them with your giant neon mounts at spawn. Bad first impressions stick with people.

I just started playing it and I absolutely regret not giving it a try earlier. My favorite aspect of mmos is questing and leveling. This game does questing the best out of any mmo I’ve ever played. And there are just so many little quality of life things that add up to such a smooth experience. Oh and I’ve always avoided doing crafting in mmos, but the way they did crafting in this game makes it so simple to understand, I actually found it fun, which was a first for me. Is there a guild wars 3 coming eventually?

Actually, players can log in with their ArenaNet accounts on Steam. So veterans can decide to play with their old accounts on steam and play with their Steam friends. For those who wants to log in with their old ArenaNet account do this: on Steam: go to library > properties > general > click on launch options and type -provider Portal :)

I think a major problem with the steam release was launching with a DLC package that was clearly not discounted in any substantial way. It should have been discounted to $69.99 or $74.99. I can almost guarantee that would have provided not only more sales, but more players. Nothing more disconcerting than jumping into an MMO with a $140 wall of content when something like FFXIV or WoW only require the most recent expansion (subscriptions aside).

To add, I just recently got back into GW2 and am loving every second. I just didn't agree with the bundle approach at all. To any new players reading this, just buy Path of Fire (which also nets you the Heart of Thorns expansion for free) if you're enjoying the game enough in your first 20 or so levels. Paying more is a question for you to answer AFTER you've gotten well into your level 80 experience.

They are starting to figure it out, it's like Chromecast and similar, you kind of want the ability to collect your games under a single "portfolio". It is simpler setting up security for a single site than keep one for several. Same reason I have been using G-mail since 2003/4? as any other e-mail provider refused to buy into the idea of "cloud storage" thereby deleting your emails out of nowhere like Hotmail did when they upgraded from 25MB to 250MB storage... Not somewhere you would like to store your account creation contract email back in those days.

My problem as a new player is that it's really hard to see aoe markers. Especially boss or monster aoe markers because the red circle isn't dark enough, it's too light colored and when theire's multiple aoe markers it makes it even harder. I wish they could make it darker like in FF14 or ESO.

From a semi new player perspective, I don’t think there’s a content drought for newer players. There’s plenty to do. I am really struggeling on what to play as a new player. I still have not bought any DLCs so I cant test out specs I really want to start playing and first and foremost want to focus on 1 profession with its 3 elite specs that I want to master and complete. In most other mmorpgs my choice would have probably been easy I go tank or a bruiser class. Most of the times I play beefy meele classes that can sustain themselves give others buffs in the process and just stand in the enemies and smash their heads. I know thats not exactly what this game is and you have to dodge to stay alive and cant face tank everything but I really want to have a feel for a elite spec/class that can do that. Be it in dungeons raids, open world pve or pvp/wvw. Are there any professions/Elite specs close to this fantasy ? I would be really glad for any suggestions that might make me help make a choice on what to play and so I can start my journey into this game :)
@BloomHD
@BloomHD 2 жыл бұрын
Welcome, I have a couple of recommendations for that kind of playstyle! Warrior (Berserker spec) - easy playstyle, literally smashing heads, become the angry. Hits hard, can heal on hits, you can run a shield for some blocks. Great for providing buffs through Banners - you plant these down and they'll pulse buffs to allies near them. Guardian (Firebrand spec) - the king of sustain, you have so many healing options (staff, a tome or 'book' you open that changes your skills to all heals) as well as many utility skills you can slot in for more buffs/heals. Engineer (Scrapper spec) - medium armour class, not heavy, but the definition of 'bruiser'. You wield a Hammer, give yourself Barrier on your attacks for sustain, have some blocks, plenty of handy buffs and unique utility like a ranged revive. Hope this helps!

I wish the comments would stop throwing around numbers like “5k” or “8k” because 90% of reactions seems to have no idea how a concurrent number works. That is 5k-8k average at one point. Go look at a streamer that has 5k concurrent viewers that same streamer has 100 000+ views through the duration of the stream. Anet got a massive influx of players from steam.

The only thing that irritated me was the griffon and sky-scale super tedious achievements to acquire the mounts wanted. This made me not want to play anymore as a new player. Being forced to get 5 sets of achievement each was very irritating. I spent a week just getting 1 set, just to find out there was 4 more sets of achievements just to get sky-scale and I can't forget the time stops where I have to wait 2 hours of real time per set of achievements then feeding them is maxed at 3 per day and you have to feed them so many times. I only wanted the dragon...
