It goes without saying that the Guillermo del Toro version will be the better Pinocchio movie of the year (which is a sentence I'd never thought I'd say), but it goes to show the difference between a director who deeply cares about the story and a studio that made an inferior soulless version of said story.

To be honest, when I watched the film, I didn't see Pinocchio as evil in the first half of it; I saw him as very strong-willed, curious, and someone who thinks everything is revolved around them AKA *a kid* who didn't know any better. He was literally born within a day so he didn't know how to behave or to listen so yeah, I was exasperated but having three nephews and had to babysit younger cousins, I got used to it. It's also refreshing to see that Geppetto wasn't the perfect father and has his faults. He's an old man who was grieving the loss of his son and not prepared to have another 'son' who was completely different from Carlo but still cared for the puppet. The dark undertones and the lessons; the plot, the characters, the voice acting (shoutout to Gregory Mann who provided Pinocchio's voice, it was beautifully executed) and the music are something wonderful to behold.
@TheDawnofVanlife2 жыл бұрын
Yes!!! Anyone who has watched a toddler can relate to Pinocchio’s learning curve. I didn’t think he was a bad kid, he was one day old. He was curious about everything because the world and life was brand new to him. Also, I loved what they did with Geppetto’s journey as a father. When a parent loses a child, they do often try to make the next child (if they have one) a replacement for the previous child who passed away. And having him learn to accept Pinocchio as himself was such a beautiful journey.

I don’t know why people think movies like this aren’t ‘for kids’. Yeah, it’s not for ‘toddlers’ maybe but I think almost anyone over maybe 8 years old could enjoy this film. Think about a fairy tale like hansel and gretel, it has neglectful parents, starving children, and it ends with children shoving their abductor in an oven. This is exactly the level of creepy story telling stories should have for kids around 8 years and older maybe. It can engage critical thinking skills and lead to great discussions with parents. PG means Parental Guidance Suggested for a reason. It doesn’t mean ‘not for kids’.

Guillermo Del Toro did the best take out of a lot of the Pinocchio’s I’ve seen that isn’t trying to be a Disney film or overly kiddy film. On the note of what you’re saying about the story being clunky and having a lot of ideas I’m not sure I totally agree with that because of the over arching theme of what it means to be an actual human vs a puppet in the sense that you’re either bound by a contract or under an authoritarian regime, it’s not perfectly paced I give you that but in terms of nailing the themes it was going for I think even in spite of its flaws it still flows. The other thing I appreciate about it too is that they don’t try to make lying this whole black and white thing where it’s generally a bad thing, it acknowledges that there’s that grey area to it because every so often in life you’re going to be put in a position where you have to lie and between where it differs from how sometimes you say shit you don’t really mean or if you lie it has to be done so to do some good. There’s a cost on the latter but it knows that sometimes the truth isn’t going to help a situation either. (I also say that knowing there was at least one or two situations where I was put in that position.) I mean shit compared to the one I saw on Cartoon Network that was the futuristic CGI one, the Disney Remake and the weird Russia one that’s a literal meme, Del Toro is the best alternative to the original Disney film.

@@tannaeros Well that's just it. There's nothing wrong with a bit of darkness in media, whether it's literature or film. @TheDawnofVanlife2 жыл бұрын
I don’t see why being ‘dark’ makes it not ‘for kids’. The Hobbit and Huckleberry Finn for example are both ‘children’s books’ and neither would be rated PG by movie ratings today in their original form. I would totally show Del Turo’s Pinocchio film to any child 8 years old or older. We are afraid to engage children’s critical thinking skills these days and classically, we didn’t use to. We are so adapted as audience to the Disney clean up version of retelling fairy tales and classic children’s stories we have forgotten that it wasn’t always that way.
