Id built 20+ Guillow's kits back in the late 60's and as rubber FreeFlight never got any performance. (all way too heavy) ...they made great display models - Hats of to you for making these work with RC .

Dumas has this model. Why did Guillows quit making it? I'm talking about the twin engine with the 483 on it. The F7 TIGERCAT. Try buying Dumas models. They have model planes Guillows doesn't have and they are interesting. HOBBY LOBBY DOESN'T SELL GUILLOWS MODELS IN VIRGINIA.

Dude, have you ever tried other brands? I highy recomend you check out Dumas Kits. They build light, & are fiarly priced. As you do very nice work, give your self a chance with something better than Guillows! Laramie.

LOL, the Guillows Birddog was the first balsa & tissue I ever tried, back in 1970-something. It didn't end well. 😂

Wow, what a collection. How lucky you are. My attachment to balsa models, complete with minor addiction to glue and dope smells, is similar to yours but I made them in India with Mercury models (British, donchaknow). I'm inspired and have the time now so lets see what I come up with. Thank you much.

I built the spitfire once 4 rubber band powered free flight. I screwed up the rudder and tail and it never flew very good. I would definitely be interested in seeing the Cessna 180 put together in an RC conversion because I have that kit.

Im currently working on an rc Guillows Cessna 170 and I was wondering if I should mount the motor at a slight angle (down and/ or right). I do not fully understand angling motors on RC planes but I see it on many others and I'm not sure if I should try it or not
@jagdpanther94 жыл бұрын
the down right angle is to fight the torque pull created by the propeller. as best i can explain. i do add a thin washer to the top left motor mount to create a little down right thrust. on other models i make the firewall a little angled to create some down right thrust. you dont have to have this thrust angle but it will make it a little easier to trim the model and make it not yaw as much when going from low throttle to wide open throttle. best i can explain =D

After painting and dope is tissue paper much lighter than parklite or monokote? Im not sure what i should use because i have had sloppy results with the tissue paper
@jagdpanther94 жыл бұрын
this is the reason i use monokote and paint.first off i think that tissue and dope is slightly lighter than monokote. i use H9 parklite as it is light weight and very easy to use. i paint my parklite and have very good results and if i do not like it i use a rag with thinner and just wipe off the paint and start over. there is a real art to using tissue and dope and i am no master ! =D

Some fantastic looking models man. Guillows kits are what I started with as well. I got lucky and picked up a rare P-39 on eBay for super cheap. Are all of yours conversions to electric? Did you change the wing angle at all because of the way it’s designed for free flight..
@jagdpanther95 жыл бұрын
thank you, all of these are electric powered and that works out the best for me with these smaller models. some of these models are very close to where they need to be for wing angle and others are way off . the control line models seem to be really close.

That’s funny. The first time I flew a Guillow’s glider 65 years ago the adults pronounced it Gwillow. Guess they were a little more educated than your hobby shop peeps. But having worked at a railroad hobby shop I’ve had to educate out customers on pronunciation.

my Dad bought a Rumpler and a Spad and we built them together. His favorite story was he climbed up on the roof as a kid and wound up one of the balsa planes he built and set it on fire then launched it. no doubt it went down in flames but you gotta love a story like that from your Dad. So these fragile little balsa kit airplanes grew up from my Dad with me and I never got over them. I have an upstairs loft with all kinds of beautiful RC aircraft that I have flown every one of them. They are the survivors - all have been crashed and repaired to some extent. Thank you for this post and I have subscribed.

It's also funny that you mentioned that somebody bought you a bird dog from Ben Franklin to start you off in building these things. My sister did the exact same thing when I was 13 years old. She bought me that exact same bird. Kit from Ben Franklin for my birthday. I also didn't finish building it right away. Since it was my first balsa wood kit I got real frustrated and left it for about 6 months. then the movie air America came out and I fell in love with aviation and I returned to that kit and finished it. it was only rubber band powered but I sure had a lot of fun with it.

Thank you Gary, i read the article and really like the way he approached the subject. i have noticed the prices for guillows models has gone up allot in the past 2 years but steeply increased in the past 6 months. this means folks are building . i am really trying to come up with a build video but i have been drawn into building my B-24 liberator, maybe a bit advanced for most but it is what i really feel like building at this time.

@jagdpanther96 жыл бұрын
the only way i can see having retracts on the 500 series models is to use the tiny MPI or GWS mechanical retracts. you could also make your own from scratch, or i did one time see a guy make a set of retracts that were held on by magnets for take off and were dropped off by a servo in flight and recovered after belly landing. :/ yea, GWS mechanical will work =D
