As a Faust player I totally get it not being necessarily as good as his last design. But something about his outfit plus the whole travelling doctor thing seems right. The suit almost felt too door to door salesman to me though I like it a ton too.

I really do appreciate that guilty gear has always been exemplary at showing off other cultures and races rather than anime boy/girl from japan. Daisuke Ishiwatari's former dual-citizenship and south-african roots probably helped a lot with making characters like venom and nagoryuki avoid stereotypes

I think the reason that Nagoriyuki works so well is that they took some standard samurai design elements (the top knot, loose coat, kimono-style bottom) and combined it with stuff that leans more towards what you'd consider "black" or at least more western. He's got the samurai topknot, but they're dreadlocks. The loose coat isn't a kimono, it's a leather jacket. I'm not sure what he's got around his waist, but it works. He doesn't feel like a character that's "oh he's a vampire samurai that just so happens to be black," he FEELS like a "black samurai vampire." He adopted Japanese culture and styles, but adapted stuff that he was already familiar with to work with that. It's a perfect fusion, and that's why he works so well.

I agree that Faust has definitely declined in this game, but as a Faust main I can say that this is completely intentional and shows his declining mental health, you can even see it in his moveset where a lot of attacks look very similar to his old one but slightly more sickly or weak than before.

The reason potemkin's design changed so little from Xrd is because his design IN Xrd was drastically different from his XX design. Old potemkin lacked the suit and helmet, instead wearing his deactivated slave collar as a memento and also pants.

Axel's weapon make a little more sense after Arc decided to give him a more Scottish look and (mostly) abandoning the Union Jack. His weapons basically look like modernised versions of ancient Scottish Bronze Halberds. Halberds usually had straight blades, but some, rarely, did have curved, sickle-style blades.

Daisuke said he based Nago on an historical figure, and Nago was also the retainer of a man with the same moniker as Oda Nobunaga, who was also Yasuke's master. So it's likely that in the Guilty Gear universe Nago is Yasuke himself, given that Yasuke's death was never recorded, so Daisuke probably imagined that Yasuke never died at all and became a vampire.
