He saw Reiner was a big brother, a hero to these kids like Reiner was to the Scouts. He sees Reiner as a man trying to be an example of a leader but broken with his inner conflict

I really love the similarities between Eren and Reiner. The first impression we have toward our warrior was: « Damn that Ba***rd! ». But now we can understand his pain and choices, he was forced to do that to be accepted by his father and for the sake of his family. Reiner truly can be a main character.
