Love Kelsey sm, but the idea that people who have acted in more high-profile movies deserve an Oscar if they've never won before (instead of a newbie) is 100% why the Oscars have lost their magic. The best performance of the year deserves to win THAT year - that's it!

There’s no chance he’ll read this lol but I feel so compelled to give Zach a huge appreciation for his takes throughout the podcast. As an Indigenous person and Latina, it was very disappointing to see that Margot and Greta not getting nominated completely overshadowed the Oscar’s discourse and didn’t allow us to celebrate Lily Gladstone and America Ferrera’s nominations. It was such a pleasure to see so many BIPOC people nominated across the board who truly deserved it. Not saying Greta and Margot weren’t great, but they were not the best, and they’ll definitely have more opportunities to be nominated and win an Oscar. I understand Kelsey wanting awards to be given to people who’ve been in the industry for a longer time, but we cannot deny people an award just because they’re new if there’s a high likelihood that BIPOC folks will never get nominated or get another huge role again. If it is suggested that the Oscars not be so quick to give awards to new nominees, then there has to be as much energy put into reducing barriers for BIPOC people in the industry. And ironically for me, while I did enjoy the Barbie movie, the lack of an intersectional feminist lens in the movie was the same thing I saw reflected in society during all the Oscars’ conversations. So thank you Zach, from one of your day 1 fans 💚

i saw an article where michelle yeoh aka the first asian to win best actress was asked about greta gerwig and margot robbie being snubbed, and i was like why would they ask her that lmao?? if they wanted to ask her about the oscar nominations why couldn't they ask her about lily gladstone being nominated and the posibility of a native american actress winning? or about actors of colour who got snubbed like greta lee, fantasia, teo yoo, and charles melton if they wanted to talk about snubs so badly? the whole discourse was just giving white feminism

Hot take but Kelsey's give it to the veteran schpiel is low key the attitude that keeps a lot of BIPOC from winning awards. It's hard enough for BIPOC to get in the room in the first place and now you're saying they have to be veterans to win (when even then that wont get you the win i.e. Angela Bassett).

I think the thing that’s missing from the Past Lives conversation is that it is, above everything else, the story of being an immigrant and how that changes you as a person. The movie is really just about her wrestling between who she is and who she could have been. That’s part of what makes it so heartbreaking. Not necessarily just her relationship with her childhood best friend.
@linhsbin
@linhsbin 9 ай бұрын
this so much!!! I feel like most people who aren't immigrants or children of immigrants really overlooked that aspect of the movie. I think that's why the quote “who you are is someone who leaves" hits us so much more because we can relate to it so much more. whether we leave family, friends, lovers, jobs or opportunities behind, we leave a part of ourselves behind.

I completely agree with Zach in terms of the Greta and Margot outrage. Ryan's performance in the Barbie movie was so obviously more outstanding than Margot's, and even though she was more pivotal to the movie, her performance just wasn't compelling enough to be Oscar-worthy. Those who are upset about Margot and Greta not getting nominated are completely ignoring the fact that this year is an incredible year for women in movies, especially women of color. Just because the movie that is specifically about feminism didn't get nominated for as many awards as people would've liked shouldn't discredit the fact that this was an extremely successful year for feminism in general.

1000000000%, Ryan Gosling was an actual treasure in that movie, I enjoyed his acting more than Margot's, and a lot of his lines and deliveries were improv! Like when Barbie says she'll be Ken's low commitment girlfriend or whatever and he goes around the corner and shouts "SUBLIME!" and then comes back like "ah, cool", that was Ryan's improv! And he SANG and DANCED his heart out, I was so impressed by everything in his performance, like he took the campy fun and didn't just run with it, he embraced it and improved it and made it believable!!! Another standout for me was Simu Liu, he was such a small role but he was just delightful. And I LOVE Margot, I thought she did great lol I will just seize any opportunity to gush over Ryan Gosling's performance in that movie! I need to see more camp and comedy from him in the future, I need it 😂

One question for Kelsey, did you think Oppenheimer was a movie about the bomb, or about the actual scientist himself? That definitely changes things. I have heard a few people saying it was TOO long because they were expecting a story about the creation of the bomb, but it wasn't. The movie was literally about the guy, the bomb was just part of his life story. Just my two cents.

In the Barbie discourse, people aren’t acknowledging that the Oscars routinely disfavors both comedies and box office hits. It was impressive that Ryan and America got the nominations. Also, when people talk about the movie Amadeus, they don’t talk about Mozart, they talk about Salieri. Because he was the most interesting and unique part of that movie, like Ryan in Barbie.

Here's the thing about RDJ. We ALL know he should have won for Iron man back in the day but the snooty old judges generally ignore science fiction, comedy, horror and fantasy films. If you look 90 percent of the movies that get nominated are dramas. Return of the king only won because of HUGE pressure from fans when they dissed the other films in the series. This is why viewership of the awards is going down every year. Honestly I generally haven't heard of or are bored to death by half the movies that get nominated. I'd rather go by the rotten tomatoes score or imdb because that's how many real people liked the movie. I mean think about it what dramas do you remember from the 80s? I bet you remember aliens and ghostbusters though.

hot take: barbie is a good movie but people make it better than what it is because what it means for them. it is so difficult to explain but watching the film from a different perspective of feminism, patriarchy and writing - it is just a movie that was okay. it doesn't feel like a film but rather a long theme with random characters populating it.

And its feminist message is rather superficial and unoriginal. I heard someone describe it as 'feminism for kids', and I think that's a good way to describe it. I don't think that's a bad thing either, and I don't think it's a bad movie, but in terms of both cinematic quality and feminist message, there are better movies. I'd go so far as to say that Birds of Prey, another Margot Robbie movie, is a better feminist movie, and Margot Robbie's performance as Harley Quinn in it is far more interesting and better than her performance as Barbie.

Side note: this actually took place 10 min from my home town and I never learned about it until 10 years after I moved out of Oklahoma and read the book. Definitely a story that needed to be told, just wish the film wasn’t in the white man’s perspective.

Thank you for including Palestine in your discussion about Zone of Interest, I’m hoping to see the movie this weekend in theatres! It’s so important to take historical movies and put them into modern day perspectives, I think that’s the whole point of movies in general, bringing them into the real world in some way. Appreciated hearing you guys talk about it. I would like to add my two cents about Barbie, when I saw the nominations I initially had the reaction that Kelsey had, and honestly I’m not a movie buff and Barbie is one of the only movies I’ve seen on the Oscar list, but I do think that being so obbsessed with Greta and Margot not getting the “correct” nominations is a very white feminist take on the issue and it’s something I’ve had to correct myself on. I also feel like Barbie isn’t even that feminist of a movie. Don’t get me wrong I loved the movie so much but the whole point is that Barbie and Ken’s, Women and Men, can’t exist in a world where one has more sway over the other, and THAT makes it a feminist movie because it’s about equality of the sexes but I get annoyed when people think the movie is only about Barbie and Women only because they think that feminism is about lifting women over men when that isn’t true. So yea I had to get over it and admit to myself that Ryan Gosling did do a better job than Margot Robbie and that’s okay!! I was lowkey holding my breath and super apprehensive when Zach was giving his opinion but I honestly agree with what he had to say. However, I would’ve like some commentary on how Barbie was treated at the Golden Globes. I look forward to this podcast episode every year even if I haven’t seen all the movies and would love a part 2 with Rainie and Garrick!!

I'm not really a movie person and I've never been interested in the oscars. but damn I guess I gotta go watch some of these movies now because sour analysis of what makes them so great makes them sound amazing

My biggest criticism of Barbie is the "let's make Kens jealous" being the ultimate solution. I hate that trope anyway, it makes the characters instantly feel one-dimensional. But it also made the third act feel like it needed a few more revisions. It feels like Greta and Noah had a solid beginning and middle but ran out because the production started.

But that’s why it was meta imo. Cuz they’re childish, they’re distracting the Kens from what really matters, they’re all still playing pretend and ultimately fighting over plastic. It wouldn’t be a mature ending, something an adult would expect, but something absurd.

@nailinthefashion Fair enough. That theory could also imply that the whole story could also be orchestrated as if it's just another doll play time.

I wish they had saved the Oscar discussion for a separate episode and just talked about Barbie here

I love Barbie but I agree with Zach bc I hate that America’s nomination is ignored bc of people focusing on Margot and Greta.

I get that the Oscars is about ~the art of film~ but Hollywood/city people cannot continue acting surprised by outrage about nominations when they don't deem their ~art~ worthy enough to be seen by everyone. I live in a town of 20,000 people with 6 movie theaters within an hour of here. Poor Things played in 1 theater, once a day, for 2 weeks. Zone of Interest, Past Lives, and Anatomy of a Fall didn't play ANYWHERE. So why should we care about those films if we weren't given the chance to appreciate them???

I would take out Annette Bening and still not nominate Margot Robbie, I’d put in Greta Lee or Fantasia Barrino

50% of this episode was someone describing a horrific circumstance or sequence of events and the someone replying like "wow that sounds great" or "oh i gotta see that"

I liked Robbie’s acting but for me she didn’t disappear into the role. Neither did Tyra Banks in Life-Size. They’re fun roles but not necessarily good enough for an Oscar.
