I watch a lot of guitar on KZbin and I really don't think there is anyone that mesmerizes me with subtlety and dynamics the way you do. You play music that is surprisingly "within reach" for so many of us but your touch is masterful and, despite sharing your pedalboard with us, reminds me that tone comes from your hands and your touch. Thank you for continually staying away from the standard showoff guitar hystrionics and reminding me what is really important and what I find truly beautiful about music and guitar in particular.

But the deeper I got into playing and analysing my heroes, the more I understood, that less is more. In fact, most of my heroes don't use that much distorsion and phrasing is much more important than speed. Of course, it's good to have the speed if you need it, but don't shred all the time! I improved a lot, just by turning down the amp, reduce the gain and concentrate on dynamics. I totally agree with you! For me you are the best guitar teacher out there. Eric, thank you so very much for frequently citing Guided By Voices. Unfortunately people just think of a lofi recording aesthetic when they think of GBV. But if you do any exploration of the never-ending library of GBV/Robert Pollard, you will find that (in my opinion) they got the most amazing guitar tone. Pollard mastered having the perfect blend of 60’s and 70’s guitar sounds. They are a great example of how you can get amazingly big and expansive guitar tones without using much gain! If you crank a Music Man or Fender amp, it can sound epic! Classic “hard rock” tone is not always Marshall stacks! Thanks again, Eric.

I love when a Johnny Marr chord sneaks out when nobody is looking

Eric -- great video on a sound I haven't always loved. Not sure you've converted me yet, but the playing and instructional portion are, as always, incredible. Quick question about your YT setup. Any reason behind the two Canon cameras beyond a simple redundancy failsafe? Again, love the content. You are my favorite guitar instructor on the platfrom. Keep it up!

just wanted to add for folks who haven't already done so -- Eric's TABs and backing tracks are flippin' fantastic and you should throw a couple bucks his way to pay the man. He's doing this all without shilling for ad revenue which makes him punk AF and I really respect it.

The main camera captures the room and my goofy face, so you get the vibe. The 2nd camera is guitar only, so folks can watch my fingers :-)

At this point I want to mention that chorus, while being very inoffensive with a clean guitar, can add a very interesting effect when you put it in front of a fixed wah and a decent bit of gain. I’d describe it as a collapsing pulse in the sound structure. I stumbled upon this experimenting with an Ibanez AW7 Autowah and a dimension C clone from TC for reference.

With all the choruses I've used, the most versatile of them was the MXR M134 Stereo Analog chorus. I sold mine a couple years ago because I hadn't been using it, now I want another. They make a mono version, the M234 that's exactly the same circuit otherwise. It's the best chorus I've used if you're looking to add chorus to distortion, overdrive or any other higher gain sound. It has a 2-band Hi/low tone stack (I believe it's active but don't quote me on that), along with depth, rate and level. What makes it good for gain, or soloing is the "Low Pass" filter button. This will cause it to only add modulation to the higher frequencies while the lower end remains untouched. So the low end stays really tight and doesn't get loose and spongy. I have an old early 80s Boss CE-2 that I use sometimes too. The MXR I use in the loop, but the CE2 I run into the front of the amp. Its not just the first that the CE2 is THE definitive 80's chorus that immediately makes you sound like you're in a Police cover band. When you kick it on there's a subtle bump in output/volume. I don't know if it's really a little louder, or it bumps the mid-range up or what, but it actually will drive the amp input slightly. Think of using an EP Booster or something like that, with it set juuuust above unity gain. It's like the polar opposite of when you use a Flanger and it sucks out your signal and drops the volume when you turn it on.

Hi Eric, really enjoying what you’re putting out. I’m getting more into guitar as well as some other musical techniques. Coming from more of a visual background, I thought I’d offer up a tip for some more lighting knowledge. Please reach out if interested.

I'll take any advice from photo experts! I have lights, but tend not to use them because I love the way it looks in place on a full sun day :-)

Hi Eric, I am one of your "silent" wubscriber. i.e. I do not comment much but I really do appreciate your videos and the way that you teach and communicate....Thanks for a lot for sharing a peek to your camera setup. Why two cameras ? I am not challenging, I am simply interested to know/learn.......... Cheers and thanks again for your great channel/videos.... -dan

One camera is more for the room and my muppet head, and the other is more guitar-centric so folks can see my hands better 👍
