Honestly, I’ve always wanted to put out an album. Old school style physical copy like a cd artwork the whole bit. Even though no one would ever buy it, just to have a physical copy in my collection of something I did would be very fulfilling. This is why I like your channel. It’s not getting bogged down in theory or how to play note for note covers. It’s usable theory, ideas and feelings for getting what’s in your head out into the world. I just sold a Yamaha digital recorder for $150. You can find good recorders cheap. I use an Yamaha 4 track tape deck to rough in my ideas with the band You can use your band room to record all of your sessions than pick which ever grooves that you want to use. Everyone should be recording. You can take it to the studio once you get a product. Studio time is fairly cheap and it helps if the band already knows what you want to play. If you're not going to mass produce it thru some agency, then use your band room and sell MP3 on line which helps to promote the band and your music. Sell CDs at your gigs.

@@Wardell43 I’m a solo guy. When I was younger I’d play in bands but it’s just a pain in the ass to find and play with other people. A digital recorder to record practicing and noodling though for song ideas is a pretty good idea. I tried just using my phone but it sounds so bad it’s hard to even hear what I’m doing. Thanks for the tips and encouragement though. You’re right there aren’t as many road blocks in reality as we like to think there are.

It's interesting this one, these are the questions that can be a little awkward. I'll try to explain why. At 21 as a young 'gunslinger' I would have answered these questions very differently. Now, at 61 (over 50 years since I first picked up a guitar) I asked myself what I'm working towards and struggled to find a cohesive answer. So I wrote a really long diatribe that eventually led me to conclude that I play because I love it. So that's the bit I'm leaving in.

Coming with the hard hitting questions. What are my objectives? Man... for now I wanna relearn how to play standing up, after 2 years of only playing sitting down! Were guitars always this heavy? Where do I look? At the fretboard? I wanna find a height for my strap that doesn't look like I'm neither in The Strokes nor in The Ramones. Was the timing for kicking in pedals always this weird? Why is breathing much harder when you're standing? There should be a CAGED system for playing standing up, man.

I know what you mean. For the last several years I've been sitting down to play and now it feels weird standing up, even though I did it for a long, long time. My vibrato is better standing up, but my right hand is way out of whack. But just keep doing it and you'll get it.

as someone who plays with the strap all the way up i had no problems transitioning from sitting to standing. it was an advice given to me by my guitar teacher very early on...when you have the strap all the way up the position of your arms/hands are the same whether you're standing or sitting. i gotta admit that there's something special about hanging your strap somewhat low...def looks cool, but it's purely aesthetic and very uncomfortable for the strumming hand, for me at least...for more technical stuff it definitely is the way to go.

I used to be you, but I started standing up and playing and I prefer it to sitting now. I play better sitting atm still, but by a small margin now. It just feels more like an athletic endeavor, which it is in a way. You have more freedom with your movements as well. And bends just feel way more awesome standing up.

My rule for strap height is actually this: My belt buckle is visible through the lower cutaway of my mustang. That gives me a height that's not too dorky high without being too low!

What I'm working on now is getting some vibrato in my voice,I have songs I've written long ago,and now that I have enough equipment to at least make some recordings,it's time to go for it,listening to old demos tells me my voice needs 10x times more work than my guitar playing,spent the last few years acquiring every flavor of guitar any studio musician could possibly need,plus spent the last 10 years acquiring all the gear to record with, now to just get busy, and give my others hobby a break which is modding old guitars, getting inspired to reach one goal often gets lost if have too many,but these no time left, to get more music out into the world right now, and it must take top priority in my opinion,try to write a song every day, even if it's just an idea for later use,there's comes a time when you realize your chops are good enough to make a song,don't wait to long or you lose inspiration, to complete the goals you set out for in the first place?

I agree learning the entire song isn’t always necessary, but why you choose not to learn a whole song is important. If you’re avoiding a part you do like, it probably represents something helpful you could be working on. Love your content and your emphasis on balancing creativity, technical ability, and knowledge.

oooof yeah guitar neck! We already carry so much tension in our shoulders, and then the body mechanics of guitar exacerbate that! Personally, I try to drink lots of water and avoid inflammation/stress as much as possible. Aaaaaaand to hell with barre chords! If you notice, I almost never play them.

As a hobbyist, I just want to chase the zone so to speak. Not sure how else to describe it. That out of body feeling when you are so in tune with what you want to play and the vibrations sit somewhere both in you and out of you. To me that means I need to know more theory so I can make better note choices to stay in the vibe I happen to be in at the time. I usually only have little moments in my day to play, so being able to just grab a mood would be perfect for me.

Excellent question. To be honest it varies. I've been playing for 40 years and there are still big holes in my knowledge/technique. I've done the band thing and am totally done with playing live but I still practice everyday. Songwriting is probably a goal as I've always played in bands where I wasn't the songwriter. I'm also toying with the idea of recording a tribute song to my late mum.

I think most guitar players eventually come to this question whether they realize it or not. The beginning stages are always filled with learning so that you can become proficient at doing something musically. Learning is the goal early on Eventually when you become good enough, implicitly or explicitly, the question comes: what do I do with it? This is the phase you’ll find many people quit because they only thought about the learning, or they have become too old to realize their young dreams. Some people never really quit, but never develop further because music is their social life and that is all they need/use it for. It’s interesting to see how people respond when this question happens to them Btw, my response to this question was to branch out, become proficient at live improv, recording, performance, teaching, writing, etc. I play for myself and the other musicians I play with and I always like putting them in musical situations they enjoy

I have a looper in my Helix Floor, but have now had a Digitech Trio Plus for a few months and it's a whole level more fun than the basic Helix looper component. I live in the middle of nowhere so it's rare I get to play with other musicians and the Trio really plugs that gap to let me get creative... teach it the chords and voila you have a drum rhythm and bass accompaniment. It has certainly added to my 'do stuff' tools and while it's got its quirks I can recommend to almost anyone.

On a gear note: you mentioned you need a new looper. I play a lot of looping gigs, and I had two Ditto x4's that tied on me-so I get where you're coming from. My favorite small looper is the MXR Clone, is it's an intuitive little thing that has all the effects I'd want (half speed, double speed, reverse), and it has EXP/CTR outs as well if that makes your life easier too. My favorite looper though is the Boomerang III: it's controls are a little more unique, but if you start slow, you'll have it all be natural to you in a couple days. The ability to have three loops layered with each other or to build three (or four) parts to a song are also really handy for songwriting sessions and full on solo gigs. I've now written more music with this pedal than dollars it cost me.

@@EricHaugenGuitar I had a Ditto x4 that bricked. Turns out the firmware is loaded on an internal micro SD card that is easily unseated. I unscrewed the pedal base and popped-out/re-inserted the card. It was good to go. Not good if you’re relying on it for live work but for bedroom noodling it’s an easy fix, albeit a bit fiddly.

Dude, I just found one of your videos yesterday on KZbin. It was on using barre chords as scales; which I’ve been a huge proponent of with my own students when they say “I need to learn more scales.” And I’m saying to them “you already know them from the chords.” So I’ve found I’ve had more time on my hands recently because I’ve gotten divorced and am playing guitar more now than ever before and am making personal guitar instruction videos for people I’d been teaching in the past before I’d moved, and they have been very well received. I’ve tailored one guys lessons to playing 12 string acoustic, and an others to playing rhythm work on electric. I like where you’re going with this, and your overall message. I also like all the plants in your place. I’ve got a bunch of plants that I love, too. I’ve also been seeking out more time to play with people that I’ve played with before that I’ve had fun with.

Yeah I had an RC-1 that went down. I figured it was a fluke so I got an RC-3 and it just broke, too. And it always had a problem where it dropped playback and sometimes even play through volume. I never even used either one of them that much. Boss stuff is usually great. I've had a couple since the early 90s and they have been through some shit, too. Still sound good as new.

I really like this series Eric. For me a goal is just to keep working on my ideas and try to finish them, whatever that means. I used to stumble upon little things I liked while messing around on the guitar, and they never went anywhere. Now, I record everything I remotely find interesting into my phone and find myself revisiting it, often it turns into a piece of a song or ends up as an addition to another little piece, and that's so satisfying to me...at the very least it helps ear training when I have to figure out again what it was I played months ago :) thanks for all you do!

My goal is to find my own sonic space so that I can get transported into my own musical world. I need to find a way to blend all my influences and come up with my own style. It's a big lifelong goal that will never end LOL. I'm not tied to any genres and I like all of them so the music Im interested in are coming from everywhere. Lately I've been changing my guitar tunings to get ideas and it's pretty out of this world. I have to completely change my perspective of the fretboard each time and I get to hear cool sounds and inversions.

I'm not sure if I'll ever be in a real band, but I'd love to at least teach my kids how to play. I just had my first kid and my practice time is so limited. I don't naturally gravitate towards working on the computer, but I found a good Abelton course that holds your hand until you get that first recording. Technique is in my opinion only relevant in as far as it enables you to create the music you want. Shredding is of little value compared to creativity. Keith is my hero exactly because he is not a technical virtuoso but he was proficient enough on the guitar to serve his creativity and make some of the most original and genre defining songs in rock n roll history.

I stumbled upon a great piece of inspiration the other day. We were at the Alamo watching a film print of Boogie Nights (great film, really holds up) and as Dirk Diggler’s receiving his first of many, many porn achievement awards he holds aloft his trophy and decrees, “I’m gunna keep Rockin and Rollin and making great movies!” That about sums up my whole world view.
