As far as a "reissue" it stinks - but as a fun tribute, as intended, it gives collector's an option. I wonder if the Rocket Red Sparkle was done close to spec since the creator loves those? 🔴See it on Reverb:reverb.com/item/52380692?_aid=growsumo&gs_partner=Trogly 🟢Buy on My Website: www.troglysguitarshow.com ❓Private Help Sessions: troglysguitarshow.com/help-appraisals/

Sorry you seemed to get a bit of a “lemon” Austin 😢 I have no. 24/75 in this same finish and it’s a wonderful guitar. I’ve also taken very good care of it and it’s still in mint condition (and still has its COA). No, you can’t have it 😜 I also own one of those 2010 R7 limited editions with mini humbuckers too (a Goldtop one) and this Deluxe Tribute of mine sounds just as good to me as that “better” spec’d R7, although I prefer the R7s neck profile. I can’t remember the specifics of the marketing of these guitars from that time but I suspect that in some of those materials they made the neck tenon spec more clear because I was really surprised at the start of the video when you were talking about the long tenon - I’d always believed mine wasn’t long tenon (and I’ve never opened it up to look, so I must have had that impression from the marketing materials on release). I do agree with you on the unreliability of the Guitar Center specs on their actual listings… those often have quite significant errors.

Headstock scratches are consistent with a played guitar. Someone gigged it and rehearsed with it. Someone changed a lot of strings in 4 years, without being super careful about it. This was their workhorse. It's what an instrument SHOULD be.

I have one of these guitars. It’s really hard to photograph. As Trogly mentioned from the listing he bought it from it so often looks black in photos. But in the light in real life I’d describe it as like a “petrol blue” sort of finish… with that little bit of a greenish tinge exactly like you describe.

I agree with Trogly that the Guitar Center specs are frequently wrong. I would say that I bought, and still own, one of these guitars and from the promo materials from the time I was never under the impression that this guitar had a long neck tenon. I suspect this is a case of the marketing materials being accurate but Guitar Center’s spec on an actual website listing being wrong. I agree though, it’s a bad mistake of the kind that Guitar Center regularly make on their website listings.

Within 5 days of owning it while at practice the Drummer let loose with a stick he was twirling and smashed the front of my Les Paul. OMG, the ding/mark was substantial and right on the front just lower down from the stop bar tailpiece (no hiding it EVER). Looking back and even now thinking about it I'm cracking up laughing at how mad I was when that happened. No worries, that Drummer and I are still good friends 45 years later! Hey Trogly - not everyone views guitars as a sacred thing that should only be handled with kid gloves. To some of us they're tools. If you do any gigging at all your guitar is going to acquire a lot of wear pretty quickly. If you're actively touring and not just doing local shows, a 1 year old guitar is going to be pretty beat up. When you're in front of a crowd you're not thinking about scratches and dents.

As someone who plays ~40 shows a year, it’s very easy to sweat all over a guitar and play it for a gigging season and then end up with a lot of scratches (particularly on/around the pickguard/where I change strings). I’m very particular on which guitars I do and don’t play out for a whole season with. 15 series Martins with thin finish over mahogany? Heck no. Breedlove with a thicker gloss finish. Play on! MIJ jazzmaster with a paisley finish that has jumped up in value? I may take it out once or so a year aside from studio work, but it largely stays at home. I have no issue sweating on and scratching up my reverends or my road worn 50s Tele. This seems like the wrong guitar to do that to. But, I do think that to an extent, the best guitars beg to be played. Whenever I see a beat up old guitar, I know that it’s a guitar worth playing!

'Back plate does not properly fit': Try turning it 180 degrees. I had the same issue a few years ago. Flipped it around and it fit snugly but properly. And that is a 3 piece neck. The glue lines aren't apparent, but the slight wood grain differences between the center piece and the 2 side pieces show it off as a 3 piece neck. At 11:26 you can see a slight color difference in the center piece. At 11:35, you can clearly see the grain variations demarking the line. You can see a slight color variaton again at 11:42 at the Gibson branding logo.

@@holstorrsceadus1990 hehehe. Hmmmm. The man didn’t like it much, did he? 😉 To be honest mine’s great. I don’t know if I saw a different Guitar Center spec run down to Trogly but I was really surprised at the start of the video when he was talking about long neck tenon. I’ve personally never looked inside my guitar but I understood it wasn’t built to Historic/Reissue specs when I bought it and that it didn’t have the long neck tenon, so when Trogly cleared that up later in the video I wasn’t surprised at all. As Trogly mentioned this was sold for considerably less than the Historics/Reissues of the day and I went into the purchase eyes open in terms of specs. I adore my Historics and own a few of them but when it comes to a guitar not being marketed as a Reissue and not being sold for the same price as a Reissue I don’t mind missing things like the long neck tenon and true ABR-1. I actually also own one of those 2010 R7 limited editions with the mini humbuckers that Trogly briefly showed in the video (mine’s the Goldtop version not the blue sparkle one Trogly showed) and whilst that one is made to Historic specs, with the ABR-1 and long neck tenon, tone-wise I don’t think my Tribute loses out to that one at all. The one downside for me on this guitar is the neck profile. I’m normally a 50s neck guy exclusively (especially loving the R7/R8 chunky neck profile even more than the typical R9 one), and I find this guitar less comfortable as a result. But I went into that with my eyes open - I chose my actual guitar from 2 or 3 examples in the Guitar Center I bought it from (in the St Louis area if I remember - I’m from the UK and bought it whilst on a business trip to the States) and fell in love with the thing and especially the sparkles!! 😜 I’m a sucker for sparkles (this is one of three Gibson Custom Shop guitars I own with sparkle finishes 🙀). My one is in this same basalt blue sparkle finish and is no. 24 of 75. It also has none of the cosmetic issues Trogly found on his example, e.g. no lacquer lifting around the tuners and mine would certainly still be considered in collectible condition. I’d also add that whilst mine has the two piece mahogany back (another non-Historic feature) it’s a much better matched example than the one in the video and is only really noticeable at close inspection. Overall I think I got one of the very good ones 😃

Tons of gunk on neck frets were worn down .. but my gawd it sounded amazing and the playability was so perfect just total butter. Its a tie on playability with a old 73 SG . $500 w/original case which was black w/blue velvet. Hollywood in the 80's before Slash made rhe les paul prices at least double. 61' gibson les paul junior single cut p90's tv yellow.. $450 w case... Those days are long gone ..long long gone. And thinking back they did have a few of those blue and red glitter pauls. I'd definitely have it done professionally by one of the manufacturers. I just think that my favorite Les Paul model (the deluxe) would be absolutely smashing in that stunning Texas Tea finish, that's the best metal flake finish that I believe I've ever seen. And on a Deluxe it would have people drooling over it, IMHO.

Trogly, my fellow compatriot in the pursuit of guitar playing competence, your progression is obvious to us. I have no idea when you have time to practice, but it keeps paying off. In the time i've watched you, you've come lightyears in your journey. Well done, my friend and never give up. 🤘

I would hate to have Trogly appraise one of my Les Pauls, 😂 They are all gigging guitars except one, and that one is covered in scars and scratches, too. But every mark is earned, they sometimes are memories or stories or songs. To each their own!

It looks like the one I checked out from a private seller in a suburb of Detroit. I drove an hour (due to traffic) to check it out, and immediately noticed the GC repair tag on the case. I asked the young dude about it and he stated that he "...barely bumped it and the head stock folded over." The repair was barely visible, but I got the heck out of there after chiding him for not disclosing the repair in the Craigslist ad. At one point, GC was blowing them out for $2,900. Then they went back up to $3,499.

The only sparkle top I've seen that a liked immediately was one you reviewed not long ago that had three different colors of sparkle in the finish. Never been much of a fan of anything sparkle especially if it was more of a metal flake. If I can ever find one that is what I'd call a glow top I'd do my best to get it. The finish in those show the color it was painted in a dark shade but under light the color comes to life and shines with a silver type hue but much brighter in the color its painted.

Would the saddle orientation matter? i just noticed that most ABR-1s have the first 2 strings facing the left and the 4 strings facing the right instead of the modern ones where the first 3 facing the left and 3 facing the right.

Never liked Gibson, until I got one myself!!....it took me 30 minutes of playing to finally Get it. Playing shredder guitars my whole life, I'm just NOT used to that Gibson profile, but man it's perfect for certain genres of music. If you place stuff like ACDC, or classic rock.......it's on a Whole different planet!!

The guitar looks nice, but too bad that GC misrepresenting what it was. The sound was thin, too bright - something is not right. 🤷‍♀️

The sound of the mini hum buckers, they are spot on sounding. My first Gibson was a 1977 Les Paul Deluxe I purchased brand new, it did sound thin and bright. I kept it for a couple years and switched to an Ibanez Artist and then a IC-400 Iceman (mostly I made the switch to make the change to traditional hum bucker pickups). Talk about "Thin and Bright", my rig back then consisted of a Fender Twin Reverb and a Big Muff!

@@hkguitar1984 I wonder if the pickup heights are wrong. They may be at the Factory spec height, but pickups should be dialed in so they sound good, awhile not interfering with the fretted strings or picking. Just trying to sus out why they sound so bad. 🤔

@@picksalot1 To me they sound like a 6K Ohm humbucker, kind of weak with a lot treble (only because the treble is easier to hear than Bass or Mids). Back in the '70s I loved my Les Paul Deluxe, it played fantastic, its just that the pickups really left a lot to be desired. Best thing to do with this guitar is install P90s.

Only Trogly can bash this thing.... Looks great to those of us without the massive library of Gibson knowledge rolling around in our noggins 🤓🤣. If it was spot on with the original specs, it would have been some Gibson Snob worthy high price that us poor folk can't even dream about, like most things they've released. Thanks for the documentation!
