Guitar Comparison: Mossman, Blueridge, Martin, Recording King, Gitane | COME AND PICK IT
My friend Mike Tucker ‪@mjtucker8064‬ stuck around after our last episode and he compared some of my guitars, one of which he used to own, The Mossman - Texas Plains R. He also played my Blueridge BR-160A, Martin D15M Streetmaster, and Recording King ROA-9-RWB. Then I had him try out another guitar I have on the rack (owned by Mike Austell - Hey Mike, come be a guest on the channel), a Gitane DG-2SS, a gypsy guitar.
Mike does not hold back on which guitar is his favorite.

I apprenticed with Bobby, and John Kinsey in 1993. My first job was busting up those Lone Star Steele casting forms. HUGE mahogany boards! After the first day, I went out to eat at Cantina Laredo in Dallas…I had to use two hands to hold a water glass because my forearms were so sore. Bobby tended to make really thin necks. The one I made myself was black walnut.

Super cool! I’m hoping Mike Austell will make me a Lone Star Custom soon!

If you have a blueridge you need medium strings and raise the action a bit to dig in on them. Oddly enough the Laminate version has a lot more volume

I love my Mossman, a little too much to take to bluegrass festivals!

Great review of the Mossman, particularly. I have the 1975 Tennessee Flattop and it is my prize possession, built at the factory after the fire. Stuart Mossman was a genius. Just FYI, Bobby recently passed away and Mike now has the company. He lives down the road from me. I plan to interview him in the near future. The company is now in Canton, Texas. Mossman originated with Stuart, then sold to Scott Baxendale who moved the company from Kansas to Garland, Texas. After a few years Scott sold it to Bobby Casey in Sulphur Springs, Texas. Let’s hope Mike keeps up the good work 👍🏻

Mike absolutely will! He’s a good dude. I did know that about Bobby. I only knew him briefly but think very highly of him. He worked on my Mossman just before he passed.

check the Mossman History from 1989 until 2001. also, no rosewood was ever purchased from Lone Star steel. The wood came from cold cast boxes that were use in casting. Some of the most beautiful mahogany to be ever used on a guitar. There were guitars made of mesquite also. sound allot like mahogany. check with Mike Austell. He'll give you the real scoop

I remember Mossmans in my local guitar shop back in the '70's, before the factory fire. Stunning instruments, unique sound. That said did not float my boat.. Preferred the sound and action of the Martins and even Guilds of that time. But the craftsmanship was undeniable.

They do have a sound all their own, a bit woodier than a lot of Martins to my ear.

Mossmans have been around. I worked in a music store in the 1970s and they carried Mossman. I remember the particular store samples had a nice flat neck and a rather dry tone. Another small volume guitar they carried was LoPrinzi.

Yessir, the Mossman name has gone thru a few iterations, the original Stuart Mossman guitars I have heard are pretty “dry.” My ‘95 is a Bobby Casey Mossman, it’s very balanced and even a little “syrupy.” My friend Mike Austell is carrying on a great acoustic guitar tradition now, I’m excited for the future of the iconic Mossman Guitar!

I need to get Mike to check out a few of mine. I have a few that hit 95-100 dB from about 2ft when you dig into ‘em.

I just bought my first Blueridge, it sounds good and has the best feel/string tension of any of my guitars; Larrivee, US made Taylor, US made Martin.

I have a Timber Creek from 1976 from the Winfield shop. bought it new. It’s s little punchier than most dreads that’s why I like it. And loud also.😂 Also have a ‘76 Winter Wheat 12 string that sounds like a piano. I like the Mossmans because they’re very balanced sounding. I have the D-15M Martin (2015) which is a great guitar for accompaniment not so much for lead. Also have a Blueridge BR260 (BRW version from 2004) it has a nice warm sound and fat trebles.
