Hi John, thanks so much for your comparisons. You influenced me so much I have just bought a HB35 plus, which is almost flawless, just needs the frets polishing and I’ve ordered the same Vanson pickups you bought to swap them out, plus some 19-1 Wilkinson tuners, the ones on the HB do the job, just a bit of play in them. I may do the pickup swap myself. Can’t wait to hear how it’s gonna sound, love the Vanson sound you got on the HB. All the very best!

Yes, got it right. There's nothin wrong in B either. I'm thinking about buying HB CST24.

Sweet John but would you say it is worth the extra dosh over the HB version? I have both brands so I have no axe to grind, pun intended!

Personally, I'm happy with my Benton. However the PRS gives you the bragging rights of owning something with that name on the headstock & you'll never lose money on it if/when you sell it. A used PRS SE will command the same price whether it's 2nd hand or 3rd, 4th or 5th hand (as long as it's in good nick).

To my 67 year old ears the HB sounded a little sweeter and more rounded with the clean tones, I genuinely expected you to say it was the PRS. And like you Im appreciating the sweeter sounding alnico ll tones, after watching your magnet swapping video last week I ordered and receive d a set of alnico ll magnets and swapped them with the magnets in my Epi LP and was amazed at the difference, I now have a LP with a tone that I like, I plan to swap out the harsh (to me) alnico v's in my Epi 335 Dot next, thanks very much.

Why dig up information about pick-ups when you can hear them? Isn't it what matters? People discuss ingredients when they are not capable of judging the dish. They then hide behind prejudices.
@JRobsonGuitar5 жыл бұрын
Curiosity... It's helpful to know what elements have what effect on the sound. That way, you can judge whether or not you want to consider buying a particular guitar. If I had no idea what made a certain instrument sound pleasant/unpleasant I would be buying blind, especially if I were ordering online. I find it bizarre that anyone would espouse the notion that having knowledge of what makes a guitar sound the way it does is anything but a positive thing.

Agreed on additional information but it always looks like Mark Twain saying he's heard that Wagner's music is better than it sounds.

For me the HB has more clarity clean, noticibly better than the PRS. However, overdriven I preferred the PRS, the pickup sounded hotter and distortion smoother
@pdp9775 жыл бұрын
Had no idea which was which, but preferred the cleans on B, so that's cheered me up - means I can reliably pick up Vansons. Are they Alnico 2? You may have a convert. I have the CS24 with P90s and it is excellent compared to guitars I have that cost many multiples of its price.
@JRobsonGuitar5 жыл бұрын
Cheers, yeah alnico 2. These are the very pickups... rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F131628673459

Lol, Harley Vanson (yes, I know, it's Harley Benton, but his has upgraded Vanson PUs) beats PRS, I thought so!!! Not that the PRS doesn't sound awesome, but to me it was beat by the HB, especially in the clean tones (by a mile).
@edybuoso1135 жыл бұрын
I had a slight doubt because I have never tried any of these guitars and the pick-up upgrade on the HB could be a little deceiving, but in the end I was right. That being said, I personally don't see such a big difference in terms of sounding quality.

I have to admit that my first selection was A= HB and B =PRS. ,But after listening to your HB upgrade video I changed my vote. So, I was glad for the endorphin hit this morning for my correct vote. Thanks John . Keep up the videos. It was very interesting to find that of all the commenters only 37.5 % voted clearly one way or another. Additionally of the 51% voting only 37.5% got it correct.

Oh Damn it, I was wrong!!! I do love the sound of this guitar, it brighter sounding to me the the HB, having said that, that is the thing I'm loving about the Harley Benton, it's full bodied with a great mix of highs and lows. Nice guitar nonetheless, I hope it sell big for Zoe's Place!

I've owned 2 PRS guitars, a late 90's Standard, but now I have a Santana SE which is every bit as good as the Standard even though it's Korean made. I installed DiMarzio p'ups in the Santana. What guage strings do you use? Also, fantastic backing track on your video!
@JRobsonGuitar5 жыл бұрын
I use 10-46 strings, mate. Cheers for the compliments, by the way 😁

I thought at the time that guitar B was the nicer sounding guitar and as someone who likes to see the underdog do well I'm glad that I preferred the sound of the Harley Benton. Blind tests are definitely the best way of judging things. Korean guitars are certainly not to be sneezed at, especially guitars made at the Samick plant. I have 2 guitars that both happen to have been made by Samick, a Dean Soltero single cut, and a Gretsch G5126 hollow body. Both of those guitars were made and play extremely well and are as good as anything I've ever picked up. When new, both of them would have cost between the £600-£700 quid mark and I've found that class of guitar used to be at least as good as US made instruments and second only in quality to Japanese made guitars. Then again the Harley Benton sounded better than this Korean made guitar, but how did the 2 guitars compare in playability and overall quality John?
@jeffreyeagen48965 жыл бұрын
I have a PRS SE , the most expensive guitar I own. Is it beautiful? Yes. Does it sound and play great? Yes. Would I have bought it ha I known about Harley Bentons at the time? Probably not. Not sure they're really worth that much more money being that I am just a recreational player.

Great video as always John and I would have just liked a comment on how the two feel in your hands - playability if you like. I have a CST 24T and after a good set-up it is absolutely stunning. And ‘waffer’ thin - had me rolling!!
@JRobsonGuitar5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, good point. I forgot to mention the playability. You can rest assured that if it were uncomfortable in any way, that would have got a mention. It's sublime - immediately familiar & quite "full" in the hand without feeling like a log.
@malcolmwindust38885 жыл бұрын
John Robson Guitarist Thanks John and does the HB compare favourably in that regard? As I mentioned, I have a CST and it feels great to me but I have never played a ‘real’ PRS for comparison. I had a ‘72 Les Paul Black Beauty and the HB is much more comfortable than that.
@JRobsonGuitar5 жыл бұрын
@@malcolmwindust3888 The PRS neck is wider (E string to E string) with less rounded edges. I feel more comfortable on the HB, but is that because I'm accustomed to it? Perhaps.

Superb! Came across your excellent review when searching for balanced views. I’ve just bought this guitar - 2010 Korea model, who knows it may even be this actual guitar. Im also waiting for the arrival of the Harley Benson CST-24 with the Paradise Flame finish. Really looking forward to playing them both. Well done and keep up the good work, the fantastic playing was an unexpected bonus.
@TyRoxYaMan5 жыл бұрын
The easy way to tell for me that guitar A was the PRS was that when on the clean channel I've noticed that it seems like every high end price point guitar has a more driven sound where as guitar B was more clean on the clean channel!
@ArielsSmartyPants5 жыл бұрын
Funny, the HB is brighter and to most people it seems brighter = better. I didn't actually comment and it seems in poor taste to say that I knew the HB would be brighter because those PRS SC pickups are dark, always have been. Anyway good demo.

Didn’t expect B to be the harley. But fine sounded great.
@bluesman71195 жыл бұрын
damn I choosed B LOL, but this is a great video a really blind test , now knowing A was PRS ,honestly I am impressed with HB version of a PRS and maybe in the future I would look at getting one ,

Well there we go interesting results how many took a guess how many thought 💭 they really knew? Well done John and well done HB Yes I’ll stick with my HB. Someone asked me if mine was a personalised PRS when I said exactly what it was and the price they wouldn’t have believed it. Only upgrade to date locking tuners and Ghoto wraparound bridge

I have had two PRS SEs and the build quality of each was as good as any guitar and better than most I have owned---including US Fenders, Gibson and Guild. I see though that they have now moved manufacture from the excellent World Musical Instruments, Korea to a factory in Indonesia. Hope this doesn't mean a drop in quality.
@JRobsonGuitar5 жыл бұрын
On the plus side, the SE guitars made in World Musical Instruments factory may become sought after & if you have one it may gain cult status in years to come... Much like the late 80s/early 90s Japanese Fender Vintage Reissues.

@@JRobsonGuitar Hello, I'm between this guitars, PRS SE (22 fret versions) from local distributior or HB from Thomann. Also Cort CR300, but I think 3 year warranty have make my choise. What do you think about quality this 3 guitars, they are cost similar +-, I want buy in PRS or LP style, but I care about qulity cause it cheap guitars and wood can have problem especially in the warehouses of a local supplier and is much better in terms of image and possibly assembly, it will simply bend from the changes in humidity and temperature.
