I've had one for just over a year now, it was a 60th birthday present to myself :-) and now that it's played in a bit it's even better. The tuners may seem a bit cheap, but they work fine, tuning stability is excellent. The one issue I've had with it was that the output jack wasn't tightened up enough and rattled a bit. 30s with a socket and that was fixed. It's noticeably lighter than my US Strat, which is nice as I'm getting on a bit (see above).

Darrell has this spot on. Bought one untested on line last month in Aqua and it looks and sounds stunning. Excellent weight/balance and the neck reminds me of an SG I used to own. I am OK with the gloss neck (which the SG also had but that guitar suffered severe neck dive) but I am with Darrell on a satin finish given the choice. The coil splits work well and give loads of sound options, albeit the single coils will never be a substitute for a Fender SC in my view. The small toggles are such a simple and effective solution to switching. Downsides? The tuner knobs look cheap although the tuners work well. The best action I can achieve I would describe as Medium (a pro set up would achieve better) without getting upper neck string buzz. There is probably a technical reason why it can’t be achieved, but I always wonder why they cannot stain the maple top edges the same colour as the veneer. Overall, I love its character and a month on, it is still my go-to guitar.

Recently I re-engineered a set of humbuckers, I pulled off the bar magnets and popped out the slugs and replaced the slugs with magnetic pole pieces. Now in single coil mode they sound very close to a Strat, however when in humbucker mode they do have a bit different tone than the bar magnet. That might have been what PRS done here on this model. Tbh- you had me at the bridge. I'm a stickler for intonation- I started out playing 30 something years ago never having heard of intonation- no idea what it was. Now, all this time later, it's the most important thing to me- one of the most important anyway. And I now realize how difficult it is to maintain over the years with the budget guitars I own. My Classic Vibe Strat does a pretty good job, but my Epi and my Ibanez both constantly have intonation issues. This bridge is on guitars that run 4gs for a reason- it intonates perfectly and stays that way. Idk if the brass makes a difference, but it's a nice touch- Paul apparently believes it really does. I think I would take his word for it- he's not my favorite person, sort of abrasive at times- but he knows his stuff and is extremely passionate about what he does. I can't believe I'm going to spend a G on a guitar though- I always swore I would never spend more than 800 bucks on one. But- back then, that's what a Gibson LP costed. LOL- Things changed.

A lot of people asking about the bridge: It’s pretty easy to get these guitars intonated due to the way these bridges are designed. I’m not a PRS fan but I’ve never played one with a wrap around that had intonation issues that couldn’t be adjusted. Don’t listen to everyone whining about it. Other style wrap arounds tend to get you close enough to perfectly intonated. The Rivolta Combinata is the perfect example for a well made and designed guitar with that tailpiece. Again never having an issue with those either. Wrap around bridges can also get some of the best tone and attack if you’re into that sort of thing. I’m personally a huge fan of wrap around bridges and yes there are a few models that have a flawed design. Having said that I’ll never buy a PRS let alone the SE model. Hope this helps.

Wow, the splits sound fantastic, and really don't seem to lose much volume. The thing I don't like about my PRS is only having one volume- I like to work with the shades of different volumes between pickups in the middle position a la Jimmy Page- although this electronic setup on this guitar addresses that to some degree. I also like more control over intonation than the PRS bridge offers. Great guitars though.
@thezeek27453 жыл бұрын
Intonation is perfect and easily adjustable. Set the two E strings with the screws and the rest magically are correct. And you are 💯 about no volume loss. It’s become my number 1 over my SE 245. Was never a double cut guitar guy (started with a fender telecaster in the 80’s) but I just love playing this guitar.

That Amber is the colour of mine. It looks really beautiful. The machine heads are supposed to be specially designed by Paul and are quite stable. However I would like te ability to fit locking heads. Nothing I have found at the moment fit without either drilling extra holes or leaving the existing hole exposed. Some people complained that the bridge is not adjustable, however a true compensated bridge like this is far more accurate than trying to adjust unless you are an expert Luthier. The brass inserts make a vast difference over plain steel or chrome. Nice review.

Does it stay in tune?
@grimreaper-qh2zn3 жыл бұрын
@@Baci302 Yes there is nothing "wrong" with the tuners, just that I would prefer locking ones for things like ease of string replacement. But I will probably stay with the PRS ones unless Paul brings out a set of Locking Tuners for the SE series.
@grimreaper-qh2zn3 жыл бұрын
@Christopher De Tar Which are they? I have been advised by a number of Locking Tuner suppliers that they don't fit the Paul's guitar, or for the ones I found that do need either new screw holes drilled, the posts reemed or the old screw hole being exposed. I do believe some GOTOH vintage locking tuners will fit but are 1:15 ratio not 1:18 as the originals. Even the PRS Locking Tuners for the SE range don't fit the Paul's guitar without modification.

Hi Darrell, thanks for the review. I know that PRS SE line used to be manufactured in Korea by this company called World Music. But ever since they moved their production line to Cort factory in Indonesia, there have been some complaints about how the quality of SE line has gotten worse. If you have played both SE guitars made in Korea and Indonesia before, can you tell the difference in quality between those two guitars?

I've actually heard that superior quality comes out of the Cort factory. Philip McKnight even said he seeks out Indonesian made guitars.

I bought this guitar and had to send the first back. The strings were sticking on the nut and the bridge seemed to be tilling forward. Oh, and the electrics crackled! The second one PRS sent me was great. Just as it should have been. I've changed the tuners for lockers and swapped out the pickups, they were just too bland for me. I went for Pearly Gates and now it is the best guitar I own. The one thing they don't tell you about this guitar is how much it sustains. It just rings and rings, even unplugged. the whole neck and body vibrate in such a resonant manner. Just fantastic.

I called PRS to inquire about LH PRS SE. The lady that I talked to was rude and didn't seem to wanna be bothered with me. So, I bought a LH Player Tele from Sweetwater. It will go nice with my Les Paul Traditional and two Am Deluxe Strats. I also believe that PRS with coil split and 2 tone, 2 volume would sound better.

That's funny I seriously have the same problem. Guitars are an obsession... addiction. I always tell my wife after the fact. I have so many in my wall sometimes she doesn't notice lol. This guitars seems like it would be really great. I have a core 24, a ce 24, se Chris Robertson... and sold a se 245. The two se guitars I've had sound as good as my core and ce any day of the week... they just have different tone based on body and neck mainly. I may have to buy a Paul's guitar too. PRS se guitars are getting so good now there is really no justification for spending for the core models... except for the pretty tops on the core. I own both and love both... except for some reason the se 24 feels like a toy and doesn't sound at all like my core 24...

Great review as always Darrell! I just got the Black Gold Burst model (2022/2023) and as you said it's beautiful and versatile. Like you I would've preferred a satin neck (love that feel on my Fender Strats), locking tuners (ordered those seperately), lampshade knobs (replaced those with amber & black ones), and a thinner neck for such a compact sized guitar (neck is fatter than my Fender Strats and Epi LP). Mine did come with binding on the neck however although it's a clear binding I think that shows the rosewood color of the fretboard underneath it. Other than that, it kind of gives me the best of both worlds between the single pickup tones of my Strat, the shorter scale length and growl of my Epi LP, in a much lighter and compact build. Love the simplicity of it's design and unique tones with the switches. All usable tones I must say unlike other humbucking guitars I have with nearly unusable coil-splits. This is my first PRS guitar but probably won't be my last 😊

Thank you for this review. I have wanted to jump in on PRS since I first saw them. I waited and the PRS I want is the CE but from 1990-1999 as it’s their sweet spot. Well that was till I played this in Sam Ash. Love at first feel. The only thing I’d change is the tuners.I’ll put the PRS locking tuners on. The price point is great at $999 but I really wish PRS would get rid of the gig bag and go back to the hard shell case.

@BryanBowden4 жыл бұрын
@@th3m1ke It’s not a cheapening on PRS at all. It’s become a very bad industry standard. I remember the not so old days where over a certain price point (around $600) it would come with a case. I loved PRS since I first saw them in the 80’s. Should have picked one up then. What I want is a CE from the 90’s (1990-1999) really was the sweet spot. Reverb has a bunch but everyone is inflating the price by around $500. If I get into that current price range then I’m going to go with a new CE and hold off on a 90’s till the prices go back to reality pricing.

Great video! I agree ... they did this one right. Paul could even have installed three way mini-toggles like I have on my Carvin DC-135 and eliminated the three way toggle. I know that when Paul built me my 3 PUP custom guitar they had to call in a wiring expert since they did not know how to wire up my custom setup of bridge, bridge/middle, middle, middle/neck and neck plus coil tap for all three PUPs. I interviewed Paul once when I was with Artistforum dot com and asked why he wired up the Santana 1 the way he did and he answered that was the only way he knew at the time. I really wish PRS could do mini-toggles with single/off/full configurations.

I have the fire red version . Love it . You are right about the abalone birds , beautiful. The maple top is AAAA . Fit, finish frets were perfect . First MOD after Ernie Ball pinks and setup (factory action too high) , was to polish the dull brass bridge studs to look like the CORE model . The pickup selector was a wierd diagonal, easy change to tele orientation. And the change from gloss to satin neck is easy, satin to gloss , well you see the point of starting with gloss. Stock clouson tuners stay in tune and are smooth to operate , do you need more ? Variety and quality of tones is great . My Strat is lonely these days
