You're like the only guitar teacher on youtube I'm aware of who talks about solfege with any consistency or regularity. Can you believe I went almost 20 years of playing without ever familiarizing myself with this idea? My playing has advanced significantly since discovering your channel and the importance of solfege. Thank you!!

Thanks for your kind comment, and really glad you enjoy the lessons! Better late than never to start, and I too didn't start off with solfege and I wish I did :D

I have a 7 year old son who is playing lap steel guitar and ukulele for the last 8 months. He seems to be doing fine. He doesnot read the music (which is written in A-B-C notation) but plays by the memory . He is so far able to memorize most of the songs (around 30) in solfage. I have neither discouraged or encouraged this practice. But he often asks me when will he be able to play by the ear? What should I tell him?

Hey, thanks for sharing and amazing work guiding your young son in musicianship. Well I would encourage him to focus on the process and the journey rather than an end result. Acknowledge all the steps of improvement along the way. At the end of the day, there isn't a definitive point where one can 'play by ear'. It's all subjective. It depends on how you define 'playing by ear', and also on what sort of music you're trying to 'play by ear'.

@@neilchanmusic by 'play by ear' I meant when one can listen to a simple melody and then play it on the guitar or figure out the solfage. I am no musician but your channel is really helpful to get a idea about music.

@@TurbasuBiswas Also depends how you define what a simple melody is! Folk songs are great to start with, and though playing anything by ear is not easy, it is more accessible to get started with. I'm glad you enjoy my content, happy to help you out :)

Hello Mr Chan. I love what you do. I'm an aspiring musician. I sing and play guitar in different venues from hotels and other different places. But I'm trying to learn solfege but then I also realise theres modes and modal interchanges. How do I build my ear to be able to understand all these and have an ear to both recognize and sing.
@neilchanmusic8 ай бұрын
Hey there, glad to hear you're actively performing! You are right that there's modes to work with, and it can be quite intimidating. You will also find all the solfege syllables to the 6 most usable modes in my solfege-musicianship guide. I recommend you to just focus on major and minor scales first though. It's relatively easier to move to modes once you've got a solid foundation on those. I'll also see if I can address your question in a video sometime :)
