This is the first time I've seen anyone explain the 'rhythm and lead' way of playing exemplified by Hendrix and SRV. I saw Hendrix 3 times live and SRV many times. It was like watching one person and hearing two. That rhythm action, or 'habit', is the key to everything. A really excellent guitar tutor once said to me 'whatever you're doing, don't stop playing, keep the rhythm going'. Good stuff.

Arpeggios- learn them, they're your friend. But- before you can arpeggiate a chord- you have to know the chord- that was something Hendrix and SRV both understood very well. My friends made fun of me while I was in high school because I was learning old major blues style rhythm- bar chords and triads. But- the reason I was doing that was because I understood that knowing those chords meant I could eventually arpeggiate them and play in the style of Jimi and Stevie. I also emulated guys like Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins- finger picking. I got really good at it while I was younger and it helped me tremendously playing lead when I got older.

I had a brief Strat love when I was a big fan of Deep Purple in the early 80s. I had an awesome copy back then, with natural finish. I have an Ibanez Strat style with 2 humbuckers now. That's about as close as a I get to a Strat these days. I don't like the thin single-coil sound, but really like the maple neck

Richard Nicholson I can definitely understand that point of view. Personally I love the sound of single coils, but it's hard to beat the versatility of humbuckers; they're great for all types of music. That's why I always keep a Gibson in my stable. That's also why Fender makes HH strats for humbucker fans =)

I took the heaviest gauge baritone guitar strings I could find and put them on an inexpensive 6 string acoustic guitar. I used standard guitar tuning and it sounded really great while it lasted. I also built up some massive grooved calluses on my fingertips. The guitar just wasn't built to tolerate that much tension though. Now I can use it to shoot arrows.
@plk5520
@plk5520 3 жыл бұрын
@Guitar Dudeo I did it because I bought into the SRV heavy gauge string myth. That's exactly right. The baritone strings were still flexible enough to bend slightly. Hammer ons and pull offs were possible though I don't use them all that often. I've never developed much of a vibrato anyway. I play exclusively acoustic guitar and my impression is that vibrato is much easier to attain on a solid body electric guitar with lighter gauge strings.

2:25 Yes, it's 8th notes but counted in a type of feel like: *and-1, and-2, and-3, and-4*. If you can apply that to your normal blues riffing then you can understand one of Stevie's biggest habits. He also very often will strum those strings open or partially open, giving him a sort of "sloppy" sound that Hendrix also did (but in a slightly different way). Great video!!

Hi I really enjoyed your "mini master class" on SRV. I was lucky enough to have seen him perform live at L.A.'s Greek Theatre in Griffith Park way back in the day. His support act was Bonnie Rait. A very memorable Night. How about the Habits of Glenn Tilbrook from Squeeze ? or "Keef" Richards who plays with a little known brit band that emerged way back in the sixties ?

@danielhartle3778
@danielhartle3778 7 жыл бұрын
DiogoCastro besides...thats what John Mayer did to play like that. its all about using SRV's comping style. lots of double stops and play as many bluesy variations on a solo til it just becomes the way u speak on the guitar. U have to put in the work. make even the simplest melody sing and vary it til u exhaust all possibilities. thats how u grow musically.

Daniel Hartle Can you say the same for SRV ? Basically SRV was pulling from the book of Hendrix , Albert King , Buddy Guy , Larry Davis, and a few other bluesman . While Stevie was a damn good guitarist he pulled from these men heavily and in some cases verbatim . So don't believe that Stevie was that original .

I know you're just joking but if you want to learn Hendrix's techniques then you've got to forget all the modernized blues you know and just focus on him. Jimi's style was the result of a self-taught musician for sure. Aside from being amazing, his unorthodox style makes him all the harder to copy.

Brian P. I know what you mean. VERY FEW guitarists can even touch Hendrix, but you can learn a few of his tricks to get close. Still, as you know, that could take a lifetime and even then it's a matter of raw talent.
