Yeah, this song is a great example to compare to appreciate just how well Harmonix did with the mixes of songs. I was bit bored and curious so I went to compare the two and these are just a few noticeable differences from someone who isn't a sound engineer so this could all be wrong. 0:03 The GH Mix/Chart keeps the original distorted intro that's there on the studio/CD version of the song. The RB Mix/Chart however, opts to redo this intro completely by reusing the available audio stems to get rid of the scratching and static noise just so it can have a cleaner sound and possibly resemble a "live performance" more. The intro on the RB Chart also starts before the count off even starts whereas on the GH Chart waits to start the intro until after the countdown. I personally like the intro playing during the countdown as it cuts out the time you have to wait to play and just feels exciting. To play into this, the RB Chart unlike the GH Chart chooses to not chart any of the instruments (bass or drums) until the vocals kick in, sort of implying that the intro is a recording being played at a live performance before the actual performance starts. 0:20 The RB Mix has the bass come in much louder and has much more "punch". The GH Mix has the drums absolutely overpowering the bass line. In the RB Mix it feels like Bass and Drums have equal balance in the mix, maybe leaning more towards the bass line being more prominent. 0:35 Likewise, when the guitar comes in the GH Mix has the guitar being the most prominent part of the mix. In the RB Mix however, it feels like Trent's vocals and the Guitar are sharing the spotlight. In the GH Mix, the Guitar is panned more to the left speaker much like how it is on the album. However, in the RB Mix, they seem to still keep this panning slightly but choose to make it sound louder and fuller so the echoes are picked up more on the right side as well, balancing the Guitar a bit while still keeping the intention of the original mix. 0:43 The GH Chart chooses to chart the other guitar chords during this part while the RB Chart chooses to wait until AFTER the chorus to chart these chords. Because of this - 0:58 The RB Mix goes HARD on this part. Not only is the Guitar given more bass and weight compared to the GH Mix, but unlike the other part that was still panning to the left, these chords are more balanced and are equally played on both speakers. You really need to compare how these sections both sound because the Guitar in the RB Mix has so much more punch to it that the charting choice to chart the chords later makes absolute sense. 1:21 This is really where the GH Mix falls apart compared to the RB Mix. The GH Mix pretty much just has the Guitar as the main focus but in the RB Mix the other instruments are much more audible. In the RB Mix you can actually hear the bass from toms during the drum fills and these tom hits actually pan and dance between the left and right speaker just to MAKE SURE you heard it. In the GH Mix this is pretty much inaudible as the mix puts more emphasis on the snare/hi-hat and the drums in general don't have much bass to them. 1:43 The same issues with the mix continue during the synth/"guitar" solo. The drums in the RB Mix just have a little more OOMFH to them. To me it sounds like there's a really subtle echo being added to each drum hit just to really sell the power of the hits. 2:13 Again, the drums in the RB Mix sound SO GOOD during this entire section after the solo and it's just missing from the GH Mix. Not only do the drums still have that same heavier sound with the panning drum fills, but there's also a section where they they do this subtle crescendo where it sounds like they raise the volume up for the measures where the drums switch from the ride to the hi-hat. The hitting of the hi-hat ramps up in volume just to put emphasis that the drums are doing something different before switching back to the ride. It literally sounds like the drums are punching and slamming their way through the mix for those brief measures with the hi-hat hits just to make sure you know it's there. It's awesome. For the entire section to the end of the song it really does feel like the volume is being slowly ramped up with each loop of a section. tl;dr : It seems like the GH Mix just threw in the stems from the studio release and pretty much left them alone. With the RB Mix you can tell that Harmonix did certain things to make sure each instrument is audible through the mix. And they even went even further to add small flourishes in the mix just so you can hear things that normally get buried under the mix. It's really interesting to compare this GH Mix with the RB Mix, you can really hear the difference: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n32Ynq2vbtGsbZI ESPECIALLY at 2:16 in the Rock Band video you can hear what I was talking about where the drums punch their way into the mix. Hearing it again, it's a nice touch in mix because they also crossfade one Guitar stem into another and it sounds like the individual instruments as a whole are doing a little flourish in the mix before the breakdown section starts.
