Here's a lesson with a twist... Think like a drummer! mute out those unwanted strings and get that bluesy funky rock sound happening.

Should definetly do some more with more complex drum beats! That was a pretty interesting concept. I think I seem to remember Dave Grohl saying the same thing in a video.

For all you people out there who are looking for examples of this idea in famous songs, observe the rhythm guitar in Dani California by Red Hot Chili Peppers. It's a great example of syncing your guitar with the drum beat. Another guitarist who has claimed to think like a drummer (because he is one) is Dave Grohl, and while his rhythm patterns in Foo Fighters songs don't perfectly sync with the drum beat, they give a nice rhythmic feel. Try listening to Everlong.

I'm a Bass player, just got a really good deal on an Washburn guitar and I've always been interested in learning the other half of the string team in a band so I have been just teaching my self or I should say I have been learning myself how to play a little bit of guitar so I can record my self playing my bass and just add a small rhythm guitar too it, and just watched your vid on the Pentatonic and Jimi style of playing and I like your style of explaining you are very specific but in a fun way so it's fun to watch and learn a little from what you have to say!

+Mike Bradley Hey thanks a lot man I never even gave it a thought that I would hear back from you! So that's really cool that I did! Yea I liked the couple vids I watched of you and I really thought the way you go about explaining things is really cool you put it in a fun and funny way and that makes it easier to remember cause I just bought myself a new ESP EC-10 guitar and it's really cool I also have a version of Ableton Live with a focusrite interface and I have a Novation Launch Key Midi controller so I like to throw down a bass track and now that I have started to teach myself how to play guitar I lay down a couple chords and use my Midi controller to add all the other instruments in and before the night is over I have a song made, recorded and produced by me I tell people it's like a drug addiction only this drug is legal and it's good for you as well! Thanks again for your reply and I will definitely be checking out more of your vids so keep up the good work!! Scott

Hi Scott, of course, I always try to reply to all the comments, but ignore some of the silly ones hahaha. Thanks, really pleased to hear that you like the videos. Yes it really is like a drug! lol its all about making music not how fast you can play a scale up and down.. keep enjoying the ESP buddy.

Wonderful lesson , Mike, Could you slow down and do a lesson on the Hendrix "Killing Floor" riff? Stunning, Also, i'm a music journalist, and both Joni Mitchell and Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam tell me they think like drummers, esp Stone who listened to a lot of hip hop and r&b to come up with riffs like "Even Flow." Hey Mike, nice lesson. How would you practice that? I mean, I can reproduce this riffs but when I try to improvise then I fail to land on the one and work around that by using a lot of ghost notes at the end of a bar. Did you slowly practice single riffs and then combine them, or did you keep the metronome running all the time and play until the cows come home?
@MikeBradleyofficial
@MikeBradleyofficial 8 жыл бұрын
To be honest, it came very naturally to me, I didn't really practise it, just played it if that makes sense.
