Number 12 : Avoid cubital tunnel and / or Guyon tunnel compression. Having your wrist bent all the time forces your forearms to be contracted all the time, which if you're unlucky will cause your forearms to ALWAYS be tensed, crushing your nerves inside your wrist (you'll lose feeling in your pinky and ring finger) You can fix this by stretching your wrists out against a wall (make a 90 degree angle between your wrists and hand with your fingertips being at the bottom).
@innes_825 жыл бұрын

I've heard a theory that you can downpick faster when your picking hand is lower. Hence why people like James Hetfield prefer the lower guitar position. Don't know if there's much truth in that, but it sounds reasonable.
@thisen11465 жыл бұрын
There is alot to that truth, essentially just down picking is much different to any other type of picking, DP uses muscle closer to your elbow than with "normal" picking. Because it is closer to your elbow when your arm is in a sharper angle, this muscle is stretched but when the arm is extended it is looser. Therefore giving you more control and stamina back. This why James Hetfield wore his guitar so low after the Master of puppets tour. Because he found it was less tiring for him.

When I first started to play guitar, I would wear it VERY low (James Hetfield style), the main reason being that both of my elbows would get very tired and uncomfortable for a short time of playing high where your elbows are always on a high angle. But with time where I wanted to play harder songs that wasnt trash or punk and start doing solo's, I realize quickly that it was an handicap. So with time, I started to get the guitar closer to me time by time, and now I have it at the perfect position for which is not like here, but more in position on my belly (kinda like Adrian Smith) were my elbows are fine for hours and get room for a better technique. I would say that it always depends on yourself (Myself as an exemple with my long gorrila arms) and what music you play, cause a lot of styles is not about being complex tecnically speaking. Also the George Harrisson style doesnt have room to move with the guitar. Like you can walk, run and jump but nothing you can do with the guitar itself, which again, not a necessary thing, but can be a big problem for certains scenes where energy also rise by the physical movement of the musician (which is big in rock and metal). Awesome video btw. PS: Petrucci just do it to show his GIANT FLEXING BICEPS HOLY SHIT
@Matthordika5 жыл бұрын
If you really are worried about looks (which lets face it, we are at least to some extent), just remember that the better you play, the cooler you'll look. Also, George Harrison is a great guitar player. He may not be the most technical, but his melodic sense is really quite something (pun intended). He also has mastery of a skill very few guitarists ever come to learn: he knows how to not play when the song calls for it.

@theneonchimpchannel90955 жыл бұрын
I agreed with everything until you said you didn't think George Harrison was that great. He was amazing. Especially when he started play slide. He wasn't flashy, he wasn't a shredder, but his sense of melody, his ability to make you feel different emotions just with his guitar, that's what made him great. George did play with his guitar a bit lower from the 70s onwards, but never all that low. I think he might have experimented with it at one point, but it was probably never lower than how Eric Clapton has his. As for holding your guitar higher though, I do agree that a lot of people play too low. When you see bands like Korn and the guitars are almost at their knees, that's just ridiculous and can't be good for your back. I don't know why guitarists started playing with their guitars so low. It's like when guys started having their underpants hanging out. It just looked stupid but somehow, someone was able to convince people that it looked cool. I just hold my guitar at the height that feels comfortable. Too high and my arms start to hurt after being in that position for too long, too low and my ability to play suffers, and I end up having to lean forward a lot. It's usually around my waist area. That's what works for me. The hand position thing is interesting as that's how Mark St. John used to play. He was best known as the man who got the gig as lead guitarist in KISS in 1984 only to wake up one morning with his hand swollen and unable to move. As a result, he was soon replaced, meaning he had played on 1 album, then came back to do 3 live shows once he'd recovered, but then that was it. It's a shame because he was a great player.

I observed that guitarists who have there guitar strapped quite low and have little problems with playing that way usually have larger hands with long fingers. Just my personal experience of course. Did anyone else notice this too? Great video btw, love the humor ;p

I would have said the same, but I think the presupposition here is that you're going for high-speed, shred-type playing, so thumb-over playing styles don't really come into it. The strap high is helpful for your fretting hand but the strap lower is better for your picking hand, these are facts and cannot be proven wrong

10 reasons to strap LOW 10. Slash 9. Jimi Page 8. If your hair is really long, it can get in the way of your strings, unless you want to tie it back , but then you can't validly headbang 7. Aesthetic (don't underestimate anything aesthetic just because you incorrectly think music is only for the ears) 6. It doesn't block out the shirt you chose to wear for the gig 5. It blocks/vibrates your pelvic area 4. You can bring the guitar up with a knee+stage monitor anyway, whereas you can't go any lower than you are if you're stuck strapped up high 3. Down picking 2. You will exude less classiness and more rebellion(subjective positive or negative to the wearer) 1. High strapping raises everyone's expectations so missing notes is just that much worse when you're strapped high for that "proper technique"

I swear if Slash's arms were long enought he would have the guitar touching his feet

Huh. I don't know how or why the KZbin recommended this video, but I'm glad the little squirrels running their algorithm did. Good stuff! I liked and subscribed.

Fucking BOLD statement saying that you don’t think George Harrison is a particularly good guitarist, I agree with everything else you said in the video but c’mon

He wears it a little lower until he does his solos. You'll notice he either tips the neck up or steps his leg up on a box or a monitor.

A lot of folks seem to want to do the James Hetfield thing, with the guitar hanging down to their knees. Not saying he started it, but he is definitely one of the iconic players that do it. The thing is...James has really long arms, both from shoulder to elbow, and elbow to finger trips (seriously, he's been parodied as a "knuckle-dragger" so many times because of it). So do many of the other profesionals that use the low-hang. For them, this might be physically more comfortable or even necessary. Those of us without that arm length just play like crap like that. My bands' singer/rhythm guitarist plays his explorer like that and his playing just sounds so strained at times because of it; when he sits down his playing cleans up a lot, and he mechanically improves noticeably. He's a very good guitar player, it just sounds rougher when he can't fully reach the instrument to properly mute the off-strings or apply accurate/even pressure to non-basic chords.

I figured this out back in the day when I was in high school. It was around 2007 and emo/screamo and "hardcore" (not sure why they called it hardcore because it was more like grind/death type of stuff) were really popular. A lot of local bands played with their Jackson guitars super high. I thought it looked kinda cool, actually. I always thought Tom Morello looked pretty cool as well. I prefer Weezer's look in the Buddy Holy video than they normally look live. Same with Nirvana's In Bloom video vs. how they looked live. Anyways, I tried it out and realized how easy it is. Sometimes if I'm playing punk or pop punk, I'll give myself some extra slack, just to be fun about things. Or if I'm playing a Les Paul, I prefer it a lot lower. But with my strat, I like it pretty high up. I don't want to be limited in any way. I've still yet to find the "perfect" strap for me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated because I'm in the market for a new one.

Mike, I agree on some things, but from James Heatfield I learned that one has a stronger right hand attack if you lower a bit the guitar, and in general, Petrucci holds the guitar higher because he is a virtuoso and needs to play a whole concert without getting tired, if he were more rhythmically centered guy, like the guys from Rammstein, he would'be holden his guitar lower. It's a matter of style I think and image.

You can wear em a little bit above the waist in a way that it doesn't look too high or too low. You don't mess up notes and you don't look like a nerd, win-win.
