As always cool video. I like the colors and contrast they give to the clear acrylic. I never get tired of things being drilled into acrylic. It just looks so cool. I liked the trend in the 90’s of electronics (such as watches and beepers) that we’re in clear cases and you could see the insides and what was going on in there. I guess I still like that look.

Tim, this was a great video. The guitar came out awesome. I hope you keep working with the same materials for a few more videos. There are so many things you can do. On some of the Skateboards my brother has, the area just above the wheels is carved off in a way where multiple layers are exposed, and that area is just beautiful. I think that would look very interesting on a guitar. In case I am not able to in the future, I wish you a very happy holiday season.

There’s a video somewhere on YT of a guy that uses the same pickups and installs them on pressure treated pine, regular pine and some “tone wood” I can’t remember what it was. There was no noticeable difference in sound. If you’re talking about acoustic guitars then yes, Wood makes a huge difference. Electric guitars it’s really the pickups and electronics that are responsible for the tone.

@b.b.4944
@b.b.4944 5 жыл бұрын
@@timsway oh hey! cheers! well exactly that! it's generic... it doesn't add something to the overall design of the guitar. the body shape is gorgeous and i think a headstock with an equally unique/ 'strong' design would accentuate the guitar's character. anyway... just my opinion... i love what you promote with your builds and looking forward for more interesting new instruments
@timsway
@timsway 5 жыл бұрын
@@b.b.4944 cheers. It's real easy to go "too far" with guitar designs and IMO headstock are the worst on most boutique and custom instruments because the makers get too "creative" . I'm still erring on the side of caution in that department. Lol
@b.b.4944
@b.b.4944 5 жыл бұрын
@@timsway Totally agree with you. It's so weird how such a small piece of the build can change the whole shape of an instrument... Anyway. In the end it's about what pleases you (the creator). But if you are intrested in experimenting with it's shape how about trying tiny changes? This will help you with not going "too far" and still keep the character of the initial design. May i suggest something that goes along with the angle of the upper horn?

Guitar going out of tune aside... Everything else about this video is awesome. Looks great. Sounds even better. My usual gripe about transparent body guitars that wiring tends to clutter up an otherwise clean look, but that issue was solved nicely with more skateboard wood. Rub Vaseline on the inside pockets, they will go from frosted to clear. Also, put Vaseline on your drill bit (or thread taps) to stop it melting in and going frosted. Really cool vid too, thanks for showing that. 👍👀

@wizrom3046
@wizrom3046 5 жыл бұрын
@@timsway One big tip for acrylic is to avoid most of the frosting when cutting. You need a really new really sharp HSS cutting bit (endmill etc), and keep it cool and lubed when cutting especially the final wall cut on pockets. A 4 flute endmill is good. Never use a carbide bit or any tool that has been used on abrasive stock like wood or MDF. To keep it cool and lubed you can use a mister, or even just a spray bottle with water and a few drops of detergent in it. The frosting is because you get a micro-melt of the uncut surface when cutting and it rips it up. You have to do that final 1mm depth with a really really sharp and brand new tool, and spray lube it. But if the frosting is not too bad than rubbing Vaseline into it works really well. Acrylic is an incredible material to machine, like water-clear wood that doesn't have any of the grain problems. You just have to avoid any melt issues when cutting it. Metalworking guys with precise machines and good floodlube can cut it so it looks like polished glass, straight off the machine. I've just got a cnc router so need to be careful but a metalworking HSS 4flute endmill gets close. 🙂
@timsway
@timsway 5 жыл бұрын
@@wizrom3046 thanks for the tips. I really appreciate it. I found that running the cutter at pretty high speeds sort of heat polished it on the final pass, but I need to toy with stepover and depth, etc. to get the maximum benefits for sure. Vaseline going to get used on the next one for sure!

Thanks. I wasn't sure how the skateboard neck would hold up so I didn't put it up for sale right away. Sick guitar. How is the neck stiffness though? I found when I made a fully (hardwood) plywood guitar (videos on my channel, not trying to advertise my stuff on your channel, just if you're interested) because half the grain is perpendicular to the neck rather than in line with it, the neck is quite flexible, though still totally stable.
