Don't be fooled, kids. James Williamson might look like a retired electronics engineer, but the reality is that he's the Darth Vader of electric guitar; the Sith Lord of rock 'n roll.
@silasmarner75864 ай бұрын
The funny thing was, he was at Cal Poly Pomona working on his degree and I was at Harvey Mudd doing likewise at the same time (79-80 - him 79-82 or thereabouts with some breaks. Man, had I known.. Also for what I wanted (being a EE ) Cal Poly would have been the better choice. But I just had a glance at their BSEE syllabus - pretty freaking stiff, and the chemistry and calculus II and III are NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED!!! Mr. Williamson is gangsta for doing all the stuff he's done in life.

This was always my favorite. Super sweet the way both of them are nervous at the start (Matt for obvious reasons, James,I guess, wondering why anyone would still care). I bet that ‘you’re good’ felt pretty awesome.

My god this is fantastic. When I discovered The Stooges I was 19 and had just begun teaching myself guitar. Gimme Danger and Search and Destroy smashing my fingers on my acoustic. When I was buying my electric, Search and Destroy was the first riff I tried. There might've been better guitars or amps for me, but with the power that song required suddenly in the palm of my hands I bought it on the spot. Legendary musician.

So glad this got put back up again. I have my more well known favourite guitarists but James WIlliamson is right up there for me, simply for the Raw Power album. I just can't get enough of his classic rock n roll/proto punk hybrid style of playing. So many great riffs and licks on that album

When I was 13 I bought Raw Power, becaues the older cool kids were all "stooges stooges blah blah". I put it on, went "eh" and promptly lost it. Four years later I heard "Search and Destroy" on the radio, and I was like "I know this song! How can I know this song and have forgotten it, when the guitar is so sweet?" Of course, this was in the late 90s, but the point is that sometimes you're just not ready for the raw power.
@rickg801511 ай бұрын
What James did not elaborate on is he fought for the great Asheton bros. to be back in the band, or he’s out, so Iggy and the Management in the end relented.. Another trivia tidbit is finding out that Johnny Marr is heavily influenced by James’ playing.. Johnny was in a band doing Stooges covers before he got big doing jangle-pop for his later band that hit it big in the 80’s..
@banzaiboy159711 ай бұрын
It's great because once you hear Johnny Marr talk about him, you can really hear the influence James Williamson on songs like The Queen is Dead.

added footage not in original. Ron’s bass playing on Raw Power album is the tip top of all time. Dave Alexander too, firing Dave, they got what they deserved for a minute. All those fill ins were NOT STOOGES. James wrote amazing stuff, it would not be what it is without Ron & Scott. Re-Licked is very good too. Guitar driven, not guitar dominant tho, it’s incredible James remembered what he was going for. However Kill City is weak, we know what James & Ig sound like without Ron & Scott.
