The greatest practitioner of big band rhythm guitar was the late great Freddie Green. He spent most of his career keeping time for Count Basie's band. He once said that the only people that should notice what he was doing would be other guitar players in the audience. He also said he was like the vanilla in the cake in that you don't taste the vanilla if they put it in but you sure can taste if they forget. By that he meant that you shouldn't notice him unless he stopped playing in which case the whole 4 to the bar rhythm pulse would fall apart. It is a real art form that is largely forgotten these days. Jonathan Stout is an excellent practitioner of the art. If you don't know him check him out..

I love these 16 inch bodied arch tops. I have a Gretsch New Yorker myself. When you hit these guitars hard, it’s almost like they overdrive in and of themselves. Very dynamic instruments. Love them to death.

yes a very cool guitar , I luv that old f hole sound , that rich smooth bottom end and a crisp bright higher register , it just has that classic 20's 30's jazzy big band sound , again Michael demonstrates his diversity and creativity with all genres of guitar , just amazing to watch and listen to , thanks guys.

Eddie Lang had two L-5s, picked out at the Gibson factory, tried out and selected in the bare wood before the finishes were applied. One had the dot fingerboard, the other had the block inlays. He used the dot neck for most of the recording and kept the block inlay one for premier performances (see the film “The King Of Jazz”). Mother Maybelle Carter got her L-5 at around the same time. Remarkable how the same style guitar became the prime instrument for both the jazz and country music fields. Michael you should study Eddie Lang’s work a little more. I’ll loan you the recordings if you want. Best from Petey

Maybelle Carter, Les Paul has 1928 L-5. These sold $275 back in 1928! That is a lot of cash back then! I think block inlay started in '29? not sure, but I prefer the look of a dot inlay for that model! Man what I would give to back in NYC back in 1980 to buy a 1928 L-5!

Norm shows up to talk about it... because he likes it, and because it's over NINETY years old. This is in superb condition for its age. Why are you conjuring up these negative stories? Norm is a nice guy and he knows Michael is a stellar player and presenter. If Lemmo wasn't cutting it, he wouldn't be on here every single day advertising for the store. I'm sure Norm has hundreds of eager guitar players knocking his door down trying to take Lemmo's job.
