It's a long time ago (obviously), but I seem to recall the Beatles using flat wounds to get their sound. My first decent guitar was a Gretsch Clipper; it looked just like the double anniversary, but with one pickup. All the best.

So, i looked up the Grestch tone switch on the interwebs cuz i've been confused by them before. The middle position is like having the tone up all the way, or actually by-passing the tone knob altogether. The up position ( you know, like neck pickup if it were a pickup switch) is like rolling the tone all the way off. The down position is like rolling off the tone a bit. --- i found Michael's tone to be a bit subdued for a Grestch, none of that twang thing, and now i know why. the tone switch was in the down position. It's a nice sound. Just not the tone i was expecting.

Open tunings. Some are better than others, but once you learn a very few things that are all over KZbin, it’s almost more difficult to play off-key, or out of tune with an open tuning. Also, learn to play slide, man. Some players prefer standard tuning for playing slide, but most of the best slide players tend to use standard tuning for some songs, and open tunings for others. A lot of that decision can be due to where your singer’s range is, if you’re even using a singer, that is. Open D, G, and E are all popular open tunings, and so is DADGAD. If you don’t know what any or all of that means, google it, then search KZbin for tutorials on open tunings, and playing slide with open tunings. One more thing... I’m sure I’ll catch a LOT of flack for this suggestion, but the device I’m about to mention works FLAWLESSLY on my one axe that had it, and that “it,” is Gibson’s G-Force “Robot Tuners.” I don’t care what ANYBODY says, I’ve got one on a 2015 Les Paul DC (Double Cutaway,) and it works precisely how it’s meant to work, every time. It has firmware containing every open tuning I’ve ever heard of, with room for several of your own, custom tunings. A lot of people really bellyached about it, but I have to believe they didn’t spend enough time with it to be able to appreciate what it can do. I bought it from Sweetwater during what must’ve been a clearance sale because I paid about 1/3 the regular street price, and I’d heard so many horror stores about it that I was going to replace them with regular locking tuners...but once I messed around with it a little, I fell in love with it. In a matter of a few seconds my guitar has re-tuned itself to any open tuning, standard, DADGAD, Nashville Tuning, Dobro Tuning...hell, the list goes on. Heh, right about now you’re probably thinking, “PFFFFFFTTTTT!! This asshole is probably a shill for Gibson,” but the truth is, I just really like mine, and since I’m suggesting open tunings, a set of those G-Force tuners is a no-brainer. One other thing you may want to consider is switching to left-handed playing, especially since it’s been so long since you’ve had a guitar. It sounds like you’re in for a bit of a struggle, getting your left hand as strong and lumber as it needs to be to play guitar. Of course, you’d also be limiting your options in your choice of guitar to buy. Go into a music store...any music store like, say, Guitar Center. Unless you live out in the sticks the GC will have their famous, “Wall of Guitars”...and all but 2 or 3 of those hundreds and hundreds of guitars will be right-handed. But there’s a solution to that, and you’d need to be pretty dedicated to playing this way, but it was worth it for this one Englishman I knew back in the mid-70s. He played left-handed, but on both left- and right-handed guitars! He had started out as a child playing lefty. Then, because left-handed guitars are pretty rare, he taught himself to be able to pick up ANY guitar and play it.

I liked his song choices too, but I liked the fact that he played without every one being palm muted to DEATH!! Lemmo has always done it, even back in his Lemmo Demo days when Agnesi was still around. I can’t remember the last time I heard what the GOTD actually SOUNDS LIKE through all the muting. But he’s not here to sell guitars so I don’t expect him to change anytime soon.

Do you think you’ll ever skip the palm muting and let us hear how these guitars actually sound, someday? Mark and Todd managed it in the bonus clips at the end...and then, more of Lemmo’s palm. I’m not slamming your ability as a guitarist, I just want to hear what the guitars sound like. I know you can do it because you’ve done it before. Like, twice.

@jamesthe-doctor8981
@jamesthe-doctor8981 4 жыл бұрын
Michael DeFillippo exactly. I hate bitching about it, but I come here to hear what they sound like, not how well somebody can play them. That’s not serving the instrument, and it’s not what’s selling them, either. I’d even prefer that he just roll off the tone, strum an open chord, then the same chord, but as a barre chord, then pick out the notes in that scale once or twice. Then repeat with the tone rolled on. It would even be cool if he’d just do that before or after all the palm muting, then the Lemmo fans get to see and hear him do his thing, and I/we get to hear how the guitar sounds.

He’s got the mud switch down which is like rolling off a tone knob. Hilotrons are a lesser known Gretsch pickup. They were the budget single coils while the more expensive models had humbucker Filtertrons. Hilos are very low output but sound fantastic. The bridge can be very snappy. You just need the mud switch in the default middle position!
