Without wanting to undermine the giving spirit of this video, I would just mention a word of advice to beginner players. You need to be aware that there are several different approaches to positioning the right hand when strumming and picking. While none are necessarily right or wrong, it would be wise if you are learning guitar off You Tube to do some serious research into what approach will work best for you. Consider what sort of music you are playing and hope to play in the future and what sort of sounds you want to get out of the guitar etc. Your own body dimensions are also a factor. Your right hand attack and technique is one of the key things that will define your personal sound as a guitar player so it is worth a bit or attention. While the approach taught here clearly works for Andy (and many other guitarists) you may find it inhibits you progressing to where you want to be further down the line and you have to relearn a different approach later. It is a big complicated topic, delve into it a bit and you will be rewarded.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. How would you play riffs where you’re jumping multiple strings and wanting them all to ring without muting them?

I seriously still can't believe your work, man. Your videos are really professional and are taking me from novice to not bad. It's all for free and your newer videos are viewed way too little. In my opinion you really have to be a great guy for keeping up the good work without any kind of entitlement even when they go unappreciated (like your songs imo). Good day mate :)

Sorry, but i have to tell you planting your wrist like that is never a good position. I got rid of the idea of doing this when I wanted to do faster alternate picking. This position just slows you down because moving to upper strings is not as easy as you say. I would rest my hand like when doing palm muting but slightly lifted in the air. The stability should not come from your hand because in alternate picking this is the thing you move. Stability shoud come from your arm. Also I would advise you to not do this position, because it can make your hand hurt. And just look at some really good players like Joscho Stefan - I would say that is the way to go, he does not plant his hand at all.
@nickdesoto90593 жыл бұрын
This is a massive help. I’m a beginner, and a big problem I’m having is picking strings. I’ve gotten to the point where I can somewhat accurately pick the strings I want, but the way I rest my hands sometimes either buzzes or stops the string altogether (due to resting more on my pinky side than my thumb, thus brushing off the strings I’m picking). This is definitely the technique I’m gonna practice from now on.

I hate to sound like a jerk, but this is NOT good advice. Wrist planting in general may feel more stable at first, but is a bad habit to develop, because in the long run it's only going to get in your way and prevent you from playing fluidly. In particular, that's a really strange place to plant your wrist onto the guitar. I decided to give it a try to see how it felt right now, and could not play nearly as well that way. Also, while I don't personally plant my pinky onto the pickguard (I keep a floating wrist), there are a great many bluegrass and gypsy jazz musicians which very precise technique who plant their pinky, so I don't think you can outright say it's a bad idea.
@カスカディア国人8 жыл бұрын
EricMLopez agreed I started by planting my pinky and now I don't have to my brain just knows where the strings are at, also learning to alternate between up and down strokes appropriately will save a lot of headache when you move to faster paced pieces of music and when you need tremolo.
@sonia-mv8dk7 жыл бұрын
Just because you can't do it doesn't mean it is a bad habit, mate.

For the letter writer (the person who's hands did not connect) This disconnect between hands to some degree is "normal". that is, it is something we all are better or worse at. The connection changes when you do not use a pick. You probably discovered this yourself. Much easier to connect the two hands (in our brains) when a pick is not used. This effect is really noticeable to me,others may not notice it at all.

I fancied you for one of "those" KZbinr guitarrists... (y'now, trying to flex or sell stuff but without nothing really interesting to add). Yet your resting technique really dawned a new horizon for me. I was able to scratch One's riff with alternate picking! It really helps a lot. You're certainly not one of those. Thanks, man.

This was really helpful Andy. But you think you can explain more in depth how to pick out like base notes in walk down lines while strumming chords? I recently went to local bar club and the performer was a single guitarist and he managed to strum basic chords but also was emphasizing these walk down lines and bass notes while he maintained his strum and rhythm. It gave an audible allusion as if there was a bass player as well as a rhythm guitar. Thanks for the help your pal Justin
@sandybryson12118 жыл бұрын
It sounds to me the Guitarist you were watching was using the Finger Picking Method where he uses his #2 #3 & #4 Fingers on his Picking hand to Pluck the Lower Strings (High Notes) while using his Thumb to Pick the Top 2 Stings thus giving the sound of the Bass Guitar playing along at the same time. You might want to look up on KZbin some Chet Atkins Videos as he a Les Paul were Very Good at it and it gave a very Unique Sound to their Playing. There are Courses on Finger Picking available, Learn and Master dot com has one Available if your interested in this Method.

A question: I notice that when you are going from string to string, I can hear the pick touching the still vibrating string, creating a very unpleasant sound. How do you control that? Also, playing a little something with this technique would be useful, seeing the technique in action in more normal playing circumstances. Thanks for all your time and efforts.

Why didn't you say to hold the pick in a slight angle to the strings themselves... I've been learning guitar for several years by myself,, picking the strings with my pick FLAT against the strings, and just lately some video I watched said to hold the pick in an angle to the strings. I see you do this, I've been dumb and it slowed my progress DRASTICALLY.
