For the price of a beer and hour, I probably saw Roy play about 60 or so times. He was playing at the Crossroads Inn in Bladensburg MD with Danny Denver's band. The crowd was a very mixed group. Power drinkers off from work, and college kids attracted to the most amazing guitar player any of us had ever heard. Talked to him several times between sets. Super quiet and polite.

My dad also saw him play there (went to Bladensburg HS) and took guitar lessons from Roy, even had his hair cut by Roy during Roy’s hiatus from full time performing.

My late husband's favourite guitar player. Saw him on the Pittsburgh PBS station as a kid and picked up the guitar the next day and didn't put it down till the day he died. So, so glad to see him here, and to hear that others are not letting his music die. Very well done, young man. RIP Buchanan. RIP SBZ.

I started listening to, seeing, and trying to play like Roy in 1977. I saw him approx 10 times, and even met him once very briefly (we shared a little chuckle at the expense of our mutual friend). I love and high!y recommend Second Album, Livestock, and That's what I'm here for. It's important to remember that he is playing his Tele straight into his Fender amp - no effects. So basically, he invented sounds and licks and became the guitarist that everyone had to go see in the early to mid 60's. I feel like he was the Van Halen of his day and after seeing him, players loosened up and let the new sounds flow. Beck, Hendrix, Robertson, etc. all went to see Roy early on in their careers.

Interesting to hear comments about whether Roy or Van Halen did it first! ( & whether Roy was still around) Roy was doing his thing in the 50s. He played with Ronnie Hawkins & the Hawks before they became The Band. I first heard about him in a Robbie Robertson interview in 1969. Robbie says (more or less) "we had this guy Roy Buchanon who was so good he was scary". I agree with other post who said his "suicide" in jail was questionable. Hung himself with his T-shirt from the bars on cell door??? fishy....

He was astonishingly good, and relatively unknown, but so was the legendary Danny Gatton. Together with Terry Kath, three of the very best to never appear on “greatest guitarist” lists by the idiots who compose them. Jeff Beck uses his fingers to accomplish unusual voicings, is difficult to reproduce his technique and sound, but he doesn’t have a broad repertoire, doesn’t play outside his genre or style. Roy and Danny Gatton could hear a song, and play it back to you, in any style, across any genre. There are many fine rock guitarists listed near the top of rankings though, who could NOT do that, like Vai, Satriani, Hendrix, Page, EVH, Santana, etc. There is no single best or greatest guitarist. Too many ways to measure greatness.
