I would never put down another struggling player nor flaunt my own playing ability. Each guitarist has their own style, their own way. All of us started somewhere. When my parent's sent me to learn guitar at age 6, I played so bad the dogs would howl. I have not watched Steve on KZbin, but I am going to see what he is about. Johnny Ramone is about as skilled as the average second year player but there are millions of people who learn his songs and see him as a legend. He made music that changed music and inspired millions to pick up the guitar. Great music isn't always about technical ability, its about transferring emotion through an instrument that someone else can understand and feel when they hear it. You're right for sticking up for a guy whose chops may not be that great but he still loves to play.

Good video and I agree that musicians should indeed spend more time supporting eachother. My problems isn't just the fact he mocked Richard Benson (and only did a brief apology in one of his videos, hasn't taken down the RB video) but in general when he feels the need to do these stupid "shred-emptions" as he calls them where he not just mocks them but also wanks over other people's songs (well, the songs/bands he feels he's "better" than) and to me it feels like such a douchey thing to do... like it's reaching Malmsteen levels or worse with pompousness as he feels he even has to mock THE RAMONES and after that I pretty much lost any hope of humility from him. Shame too because as you said he's extremely skilled and proficient at the guitar and I found a couple of his videos pretty funny especially the ones that are more the relatable humor. It just hits too close to home to me as how I know singers who feel the need to loudly sing over OTHER peoples' songs while THEY'RE singing and musicians of just about all instruments and styles who turn their nose in the air and throw shade at those they feel they are "superior" to. It used to make me so mad but now I realize stuff like that comes from a place of deep rooted insecurity... it makes sense considering Stevie has admitted his performance anxiety/stage fright too so ultimately I just feel sorry for the guy really. He must be very hurt and lonely deep down. I like that you brought up the point you make about how musicians support eachother a lot less than they used to compared to say the 80s, it's a sad point that I've never really heard anyone touch on. Anyways, fantastic rebuttal with a lot of class instead of attacks.

Okay, so this is an old video but I had to comment. Your sentiment is correct, man, although in this case I'm tempted to say there's a hint of overreaction. Checking Steve's video - and in extension Richard Benson's video - it's pretty obvious that Richard Benson is taking the piss out of shredders such as Steve himself. So... having Steve take the piss out of that video in return is probably not much of a tragedy.
@RobertWJackson5 жыл бұрын
I don’t think so man. If you look into Richard Benson’s story, he developed severe arthritis in his hands that crippled his playing to what it is now. That sent him into severe depression to the point he even attempted suicide on one occasion. Is he a man who is just putting on an act? Or is he really a man who is just trying to cling onto his music career by trying to continue playing as best he can because he feels that he’s lost everything else? The truth is, nobody seems to know for sure. My question is, why are so many people unwilling to give this guy the benefit of the doubt in the event that it IS the latter?
@Jayteaseepiirturi5 жыл бұрын
I considered this one over the night and... you know what? I come to the conclusion that both cases are happening. The options aren't exclusive. Nobody knows for sure, fine. But... the guy is wearing these wigs and just making himself look like an absolute carricature of a shredder. I somehow doubt that's done without a hint of self-irony. It sucks that the arthritis robbed him of his ability to play guitar. I feel for him on that. The suicide attempt crippled him even further. Without a finer point, the latter was his own doing. He made a bad situation worse. I saw a video clip of Benson playing in his old days. The dude was an AWESOME player. Beyond a shadow of a doubt he's a great musican. With his crippled hands it's impossible to play fast or very technically. However, even with those hands, his musicianship tells me he'd NEVER play that bad except deliberately. I find no evidence that he's even trying to play anything that makes sense in the video Steve Terreberry tore apart. Personally I'm not laughing at Benson but rather with him. Because yeah, he makes a valid point about shredding and how it can sound senseless, no matter how technically brilliant it is. As for Steve... he was just being Steve. That's how he has succeeded with his channel. Whether or not he should have taken on reacting to the Benson video in his funny(?) manner, I don't know. His playing his guitar solo on Benson's song... well, yeah. That looks bad. However, what I'm pretty sure about is Benson knows exactly what can happen if you put stuff in the Internet. He doesn't seem stupid like that. What goes in the Internet stays in the Internet. You subject yourself to whatever comes your way. Hell, maybe the whole WTF reaction by people (Steve included) made him think: "Hey, people react to this. Let's see what happens if I take it further..." That Broken Chains dude (he commented here 6 months ago) points out in the comment section that Benson is currently one of the hottest acts in the Italian live circuit. Hell, he even makes appearances in Italian TV pulling his thing and playing the role of a self-absorbed shredder. Overacting and all that. I don't see him doing that if it weren't an act. Most importantly... Benson had to find a way to survive after losing most of his ability to play. I don't know how heartbroken he actually is these days about it - obviously it's been really bad if he wanted to commit suicide over it. However... at some point he'd have to say 'Fuck it' and react accordingly. Either forget about guitar or make it a big fat joke. It's not unheard of that people deal with shitty situations with self-irony or cruel humor. I don't think Jason Becker would have ever survived without a sense of humor. Again, your sentiment is correct, and Steve's playing his own guitar solo on Benson's song looks bad. That was a crap call from him. Otherwise, I don't think Steve would ever belittle an able guitarist who is legitimately not as good as Steve himself. I haven't seen him do that in any of his vids. There, that's my two cents... well, okay. Twenty dollars.

I always laughed when he made fun of Lil Wayne, Madonna and Nick Jonas, but I have to agree with you on this one, he took it way too far. I also used to laugh at Richard's guitar playing, but after reading his story in some of the comments of that video that were posted by people from Italy (where he currently lives), I started to feel very bad for this guy. From what I've read he made a prog rock album back in 1972 called Buon Vecchio Charlie, which is the self titled album of his band at that time (I actually listened to it and it was really great tbh), he wasn't the best guitarist in the world but he was good enough. in the 80's he hosted TV shows in Italy that were talking about rock and metal, at that time he started to develop Arthritis which made him play worse and worse and worse to the point he can't even use his index finger and his solos became less and less musical. I also read rumors that he considered comitting suicide twice, once by almost jumping off of a bridge and he currently has heart diseases. I think this is the only video Stevie has ever made that I've ever disliked

Hello, it's me, commenting on a nearly year old video. I'm just here to say I'm kind of on the fence on this particular issue. Like, I absolutely agree with you, musicians have a hard enough time being taken seriously without being put down by other musicians, and there should be a community of respect among people that share a common interest. On the other hand, Steve wasn't poking fun at some kid on KZbin posting his first video, he was poking fun at someone who has been in the game for a while, and even released an instructional video in days gone by. Like, yes, the focus of the video was on Benson's skill as a guitarist, which was a bit of a low blow, but at least in my eyes, it was also a prodding at Benson's ego regarding his own skill. In the grand scheme of things, I haven't been playing that that long, 12 years is respectable, but not mind blowing. In my 12 years of playing, I've picked up on a lot of techniques, but have mastered only a portion of those, and there are some techniques that still elude me. I know that about myself, and therefore take the time to practice those techniques before showing them off. Benson doesn't seem to understand that concept. Either that, or if the story about the accident was true, he hasn't come to terms with how he's able to play now. I don't mean to harp on the guy, I'm just stating what I'm seeing with the videos I find on this site. Before I finish, let me just say, I have nothing but respect for both you and Steve, you both put out great content, and I'm not trying to say your opinion on this subject is wrong in any way, I'm just hoping to shed some light on a different angle to it. Keep up the good work, man.

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. Richard Benson has suffered from arthritis in his hands and fingers that has crippled his playing. He was once a good guitar player. But not being able to play like he once could took its toll on him mentally and sent him into depression, and it’s cost him everything. He even attempted suicide at one point. A lot of people seem to think his current act is merely a gag, but it seems to me that he’s just continuing to play music as best he can because he feels it’s all he’s got left. Somebody commented further down the thread recently that they had played a show on the same bill as Richard Benson (different band that went on before him), and to see the heartbreak in his wife’s and daughter’s faces over the way the audience was treating him was gut-wrenching. Nobody really seems to know for sure where exactly his head is at, but I don’t understand why more people don’t give him the benefit of the doubt. I don’t have any beef with Stevie T over this or anything else. I still Subscribe to his channel and I watch his videos often. I honestly don’t think he meant anything by his Richard Benson video, I just don’t think he looked far enough into the guy and thought it all the way through before he turned on the camera. Making fun of Nick Jonas for playing a terrible guitar solo on live TV is one thing. Making fun of a guy with a myriad of mental and physical health issues who’s lost everything, on the other hand, ain’t cool if you ask me. That’s why I spoke up.
@mackmorris63545 жыл бұрын
@@RobertWJackson it's really sad to see, but honestly, I think the hate for him at this point is basically a living meme. I'm sure at least some people know about his struggles with arthritis (thank you for clearing that up, by the way, I thought I had seen something on that), but by this point it just seems so ingrained in musical culture to dislike him that it's almost like a rite of passage to say something negative about him. Another example of this is Nickelback. I don't necessarily enjoy what Nickelback produces, but the quality of what they put out is not proportional to the amount of hate they get. I feel for Benson, and in some ways I think it might be time for him to move on from that part of his life, but, to reference your video, the guitar becomes an extension of ones self after a certain point, so I completely understand why he wouldn't just want to walk away from something that makes him inherently him. It's a tough issue.

Sadly, the guy that Stevie spoofed, isn't actually a guitar player that's trying to hone his craft... Let's NOT get it twisted, people's "opinions" are going to come a dime a dozen, hell some even made fun of Hendrix, because he performed some tunes out of tune... From what I saw, this guy really isn't a player one should take seriously...I'm not going to defend either for their actions, but I'm certain that the guy he "beat up on", isn't feeling any pain.... As a guitar player, I respect and admire those that are actually trying to advance, accomplish and inspire other guitar players to hone their craft, and not opt for cheap theatrics and comical visuals.... That's just MY 2 cents...
@krelbar6 жыл бұрын
Hello Robert, First I want to say that I think Richard Benson is trolling. Also, I doubt this guy was humiliated. If you noticed in several videos that Stevie T posted where people are throwing things at Benson and he keeps going. Also, there are videos that show he is a more than competent guitar player. (Richard Benson - Adagio in Re) Also, once a youtuber builds a subscriber base they get a taste of what fame brings. You need a thick skin to put yourself 'out there' on you tube or any other forum that holds you up to scrutiny...if one does not possess this thick skin they may want to find an alternative. I think you are missing one important bit of context. What do Lil' Wayne, Nick Jonas, Madonna and Mr. Benson have in common? They have all been parodied by Stevie T for their guitar skills. Also,they are all people that, despite their skills, put themselves 'out there' rather brazenly as being a great guitar player. This isn't 'bullying'...we have to be selective in how this term is used. By your standards, no matter if you brush it off as being ok, Zachary Vex is also being humiliated and bullied by your review of his pedal. However, he 'puts himself out there', so the responsibility is on him to live up to that image he created as well as the others I mentioned.If someone made Stevie T aware of a channel of some guy sitting around in his bedroom that just couldn't play, I doubt it would have been parodied. It was parodied because Richard Benson presents himself as a virtuoso. You don't call this 'bullying', its called 'taking someone down a peg'. There is a purpose for this in society, we see all too much where someone is propped up by everyone around them to the point where even though they have lack of ability they believe they posess abilities they don't have for the sake of not hurting their feelings. At some point there will be a heartbreak...better sooner than later. We see this on 'American Idol', where people are told they can sing by their expanding circle only to find out that they can't. Unfortunately, we see this in politics all the time as well. No one wants to vote against or criticize someone who is incompetent simply because their feelings may be hurt because they belong to a certain race, religion or sexual orientation. Taking people down a peg can be a motivator to work harder or realize that they need to pursue something else.
@jamestombs68926 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry krelbar. I was at work and could not finish my thoughts. As for your comments about American Idol. People tune in to watch Simon Cowell humiliate the folks who were told by thier "circle " that they have talents. Most of it sounds scripted to me but what a commentary on the values of mankind. If just one of those people truly believed they could sing, and that was thier dream, what kind of an emotional toll could that have on them ? That " taking them down a notch " crap you are spewing could possibly damage them emotionally for years to come. Can you imagine the humiliation of being taken down a notch in front of however many losers that show attracts ? This is why your thinking is flawed. If that brain dead money grubbing Cowell hurt just one person it's one to many ! He could let them down easy, but then that would ruin Idols ratings. Once again what does it say about the mentality of the people who watch this drivel? Oh well, it's just my opinion. You should think before you try to " school " Robert.
@RobertWJackson6 жыл бұрын
It’s okay James, I don’t think krelbar was trying to “school” me, he was just offering another point of view, which is okay. To his point, he does have a point. However, there seems to be strong evidence to suggest that Richard Benson suffers from a disability. Simon Cowell is a very direct and oftentimes brash individual, but I’m quite sure he would approach somebody with a disability who cannot sing a lick a little bit differently.
@krelbar6 жыл бұрын
@@jamestombs6892 If you reign it in early, the heartbreak isn't as bad. However, at some point people need to hear the hard truth. I wanted to be an NFL player. I wanted to be the best guitarist in the world. While I was a pretty good football player in high school, I realized right away my body wasn't up for the physicality past that. While I managed to become a pretty good guitar player, I was aware of my limitiations. In both cases there were people telling me I was the greatest. Fortunately, I knew I wasn't...I would hope that if I wasn't able to see through this, there would be people to keep me grounded so I don't believe the hype and get crushed later on. With a lot of people, their desire can overwhelm their common sense. Or maybe its just me and I'm funny that way?

@@jamestombs6892 So, if they aren't taken down in that show...the answer is to just say they're good when they're not and they continue humiliating themselves with people not telling him hes not good? He could very well be. But my understanding is that at one time Richard Benson was a respectable guitar player. Somebody has shared an older video of him in his younger days and he was actually a pretty good player. He clearly has knowledge of scales and music theory and could play the instrument. He developed arthritis in his fingers and it eventually crippled his playing, sending him into serious depression. Apparently he even attempted suicide at one point. I've done a lot of research on this and the truth is nobody seems to know for sure whether or not he's currently become a comedy act and is intentionally bad, or if he is merely doing the best he can to try to play like he used to. Regardless, nobody seems to know for sure. That's why I think it was wrong to make a parody video of him.

Some food for thought and agreement: Steve didn't do his due diligence in making a video poking fun at R. Benson; he has since apologized. I agree with you in the support camp. However, you justifying "poking fun at" pedals, gear, etc, is not any different than Steve T "poking fun at" some human (be it with, or without a horde of followers). Did you consider that the people who designed the pedals, guitars, etc. feel bullied or humiliated when you say something they made is "goofy-looking" or "poke fun at" possibly their life's work? Something they maybe spent hours away from their home, family, and/or anything they care about to create in hopes that other people will like it as well? Sure, the aforementioned could be a purely cold and/or capitalistic endeavor; in the logical basis you provide, does that human originating and materializing of an idea into a physical, tangible thing, in and of it's self, not deserve dignity as well? Physical capability aside (because humans adapt i.e. a one handed person plays guitar subjectively well), the gear you, possibly harshly, criticize and "poke fun at" cannot practice to get better, express content with their current output, publish their discontent with other's opinions, defend themselves, nor understand the post-modern nihilistic internet ad hominem comedic object known today as a "meme;" this gear also is not aware, in at least a humanly sentient way, of lack of rules being followed by humans popularizing the aforementioned "meme."People can practice. The people who made your gear practice making things, too, but the concept still applies. 9:11 you state "[Steve T] did it for no other reason other than the fact that he is an inferior guitar player to you." That is just not true. You contradict yourself on that a few times in addition to other obvious reasons why Steve T made the video. On the "Million Followers Being Herded Together to Jusfify Cheap Shots, Disperse Bullying Guilt, Exploit Mob Mentality and Sheer Number to Enforce an Opinion, or Rally in Collective Disdain against R. Benson" topic, I have what some could consider a distorted, nay, vitiated modern personal take on an old classic: It only takées one to cast a stone; So, does it matter how many people are casting stones if the first one killed the target?

I don't think Robert did anything wrong. I appreciated this video as someone who is in a lull of guitar playing skill progression. First of all if this was Fox News for example, do you think the reporter would not mention the name Stevie T? Making the news as big as possible is what makes someone a career. I think the content of the video is what is important and well said. Dropping a name is just calling someone out and asking them to admit they were in the wrong and hopefully apologize. I think that's just a part of being a North American. If that is wrong and you have never acted this way than you are better than the rest of us. I have said this on a lot of guitar channels and a tab site and no matter how many times I say it things are not going to change. This will be the last time I say this...(We all have a common goals, get better at playing guitar, knowing guitar gear and keeping the guitar alive. Instead of tearing each other down we need to do and say what we can to help each other to be better players and to keep the guitar alive.) Sounds cheesy but I am a 46 year old retired police officer and I have seen enough hate for 10 life times. I cant wrap my mind around why people hate on each other so hard on social media. The only the answer I can come up with is because I am not like them just like some of the people I put in jail. I have seen 2 cases and I know there are thousands of cases of people committing suicide because of what people have said or uploaded to social media. I will never become numb to this problem but I have to accept the reality that there are sick and evil people in this world and they will do sick and evil things. Having said that for every sick and evil person in this world I like to believe that there are a thousands of good people that make mistakes but try hard to do the next right thing. I try to devote most of my attention on those people but at the same time try to talk to and understand the haters because people can change.
