I am about to shield my own tele with copper tape so it was good to see this. But....from other youtube videos, some people say the most important part to shield is the electrical cavity at the back with the pots. Were you not tempted to do this? The other thing is that some people say you must connect in the earth of the incoming guitar cable (from the amp) to the copper tape so that everything is grounded too.

Nice tutorial, many thanks. But why did you shield the control plate and bridge? They are already conductive.
@fernandovidaltello75806 жыл бұрын
Control plate is metal, you don´t need to put copper foil here
@gugarl6 жыл бұрын
yes, I used copper here just because it is a better conductor, but not really needed to do that.
@ThrashRebel5 жыл бұрын
Fernando Vidal Tello, my thought, also. The bridge is also metal. Putting shielding tape on the edges of the body so that the control plate & bridge make contact with it is all that is needed. I have a Jazz bass with a metal control plate &, of course, bridge.

Thanks for the upload. I'm still trying to get the shielding right on my Squier Tele. I keep ending up with hum. Your video shows two things I hadn't seen before: putting the wire between cavities underneath the copper foil, and shielding the back side of the bridge plate. I am once again hopeful!
@gugarl7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your comment. (1) putting the wire between cavities underneath the copper foil is an important step, but (2) shielding the back side of the bridge plate not needed at all, since the metal of the bridge will also act the same way of copper foil. I've just used that way because copper is a better conductor. Best regards.
@ojara4 жыл бұрын
I recommend you to wire a ground cable, soldering it from the casing of the volume pot and then routing it to be in contact to the back of the bridge plate. It just has to be in contact with it. It will be a good ground to avoid hum. Best luck!

Hello bro. Pregunta.
@gugarl5 жыл бұрын

why is it fender guitars or other guitar companies don't shield the guitar just like what you did on this video presented, or not even using copper shielding tape?
@kimhansen63845 жыл бұрын
There is a lot of things I don´t understand, and one of them is: Why does no one use shielded wire on single coil pickups? They do on humbuggers. I suppose the frontpickup on a Tele is relatively good shielded because of the metal cover, so where does most of the noise get in? One should think the wires and the bridge pickup.

I think because it is a time consuming proccess.

Gustavo muchas gracias!!
@gugarl6 жыл бұрын
Gracias, Juan.
@Juampi19756 жыл бұрын

do you shield the routing tunnels between the pickups and the control cavity?
@angusrc4 жыл бұрын
@Kizzy C gotcha thanks! I'd seen a video of someone painting the inside of the tunnels with conductive paint to shield them as well. It seemed like a lot of work and I wanted to avoid that if it turned out to be unnecessary

My Pick guard does not completely touch the guitar body around the neck pick up, it's goes a bit up like it doesn't fit. I think it's going to effect the shielding, am I right?
@gugarl6 жыл бұрын
I don't think this will affect substatially, but it will need to touch in some point.

what kind of wire did you use?: and it looks like you didn't solder it, but rather left it to rest under the foil?
@gugarl7 жыл бұрын
You're right, I didn't solder. As you said, I left the wire under the foil and press it hard against the wire to get a good connection. Wire: www.eyguitarmusic.com/3-Meters-98-Feet-Coated-Hook-Up-Wires22awgstyle001-Color-Choices-WhiteBlackRedYellow_p_869.html

I have a modern player telecaster plus (SSH), I put the copper on the control plate and it killed my signal. I unscrewed the control plate a little bit and it seems to work on and off. Should I take the copper off the control plate?
@gugarl6 жыл бұрын
It was probably touching any part it shouldn't. You can use tape above shielding to avoid contact.
@dickchilton54627 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much. Do you run a ground wire from the control cavity to a pot?
@gugarl7 жыл бұрын
No need to run a wire, because the grounded metal parts of the pots and switches were touching the copper foil. Thanks.
@ryanspirals7 жыл бұрын
i was is wondering why you used the copper foil to shield the back of the control plate. wouldn't the control plate itself be sufficiently conductive?
@gugarl7 жыл бұрын
Ryan Lum yes it is. No need the copper foil at all. Just used it in the control plate and bridge because it is a better conductor.

Nice video, thanks a lot. Just one question, why including the bridge and the aluminum plate? Aren't they conductors? I thought it was better to isolate them from the Faraday cage you built inside. I mean, if you connect them, it would no longer be a cage.

good job, only i would have put a small wood screw threw it into the wood, then run a wire from the screw of each cavity to the back of the coil and soldered there, no EMI would EVER get through!

What is the need to shield ?
@gugarl6 жыл бұрын
Shielding allows you to substantially reduce all unwanted interference and hum.
@yqwgjsg6 жыл бұрын
VinnieSmyyth Shielding is a drain of RF signals to ground. Any RF drained off to ground is less sent through the pickups to be amplified as noise

That copper tape is pretty but expensive. You're forming a faraday cage and any metal will do. Heavy aluminum foil and contact cement will do the job just as well and much cheaper (if you're doing your own guitar). If you're a luthier selling the guitar and getting your money back, knock yourself out with the copper tape.
