I've only rarely seen him play entirely solo. The plectrum style seems so much more dynamic and capable of rhythmic expression than the finger style that Joe Pass popularised, though I love both. I find it slightly surprising that more players don't go in for this kind of plectrum solo playing, though I suspect it may be unique to Barney - at this level anyway.
