I knew Jorge Morel in New York. I had a few lessons with him and also socialized with him on occasion. This guy was a beautiful person and also treated us to a few private concerts. In my view, he plays on the level of Segovia and I am lucky to have known him. Jerry Deleissio

I only found out after his death that he'd lived in NYC for many years, and regret I hadn't gotten to know him better. It seems unanimous that he was a super gentleman.

Yes, gathering up what he left us is a quest for sure, he had some fantastic pieces to share.

@@labellaguitar So, true, Segovia was more of a Spanish Ambassador, who arranged some great pieces, he studied with some true greats, got those insights and carried them forth, but his oeuvre shows he struggled with his playing.

Outstanding! At the time when the critics were extolling Segovia, there were formidable performers in South America like this young man, who often surpassed him.

@@edeledeledel5490 What?
@edeledeledel5490 Жыл бұрын
@@johnshort5003 His tone is awful, but that might just be the recording, but his fingering is not very precise and what he is playing is not all that complicated, and seems to be improvised. I really don't want to listen to any more of it. It's unpleasant. Just because it is a bit flashy, doesn't mean he is better than Segovia was, and impresses some people who don't know better. Most video recordings of Segovia are when he was in his 70s and 80s. Segovia's main fame is associated with his promotion of the guitar as a classical instrument - and he was born 38 years before Jorge Morel. Jorge looks about 25-30 here; Segovia would have been 63-68. Not really a fair comparison. So as I said the comment is CRAP!
@johnshort5003 Жыл бұрын
@@edeledeledel5490 Actually what I meant was: which of the above two comments were you referring to. I think it's probably better for people to avoid making dubious comparisons. I watched another video of him years later and it was definitely better in all respects. You're right that the tone is awful in this old video but the pieces are definitely not improvisations. I've been hearing them alot on BBC Radio 3 lately. He seems to be quite popular with emerging guitarists.

I love the tune of the first song and how he gets three counter melodies going, you hear two a lot in classical but I've not heard three before. First he introduces a bass line, then a counter point line for additional harmony and then the offbeat rhythmic stabs, it all comes together neatly, wow!

I think it's not correct to say, 'bout those great musicians, "this one is better than this other" 'cause everyone has his temperament & personnality, making him (for ex.) choose specific type of instrument and the tempo of pieces . So we need to "know" a musician (documentations) before to understand his work. The listener too , according to his mood , will make his choice , for same piece , like at restaurant

Notice at 1:19 his vibrato is not that of a guitarist so much as that of a violinist -- the more difficult type of vibrato.

+KP MIX Misionera by Fernando Bustamante (arranged for guitar by Jorge Morel himself). The title refers to the woman of the Argentinian province of Misiones. Even though it's usually inscribed within the genre "polka", this is actually a "galopa", a Misioneran (?) rhythm. Traditional music composers are not always very original in their titles but if you want to hear another galopa here is Misionerita (little Misionera) by Lucas Braulio Areco (known as the Patriarch of Galopas), arranged and played by Jorge Cardoso, a guitar player from Misiones: /watch?v=3MtPCpU3N6g
