I feel like a lot of acoustic electrics have too much top end, so I was coming to this video expecting to like the polyweb. As someone said below, it does sound better when playing single notes. However, when strumming it seems like the polyweb dampens the strings and so they don't ring out as much with the nanowebs. I already have nanowebs on one of my guitars and I like them. I think that I will stick with them.

The Elixir website shows Polyweb/Warm-Nanoweb/Bright. That's not how these sounded. I did my own test with 80/20 Bronze vs Phosphor Bronze and found the 80/20s brighter which I like on my 66 Southern Jumbo which sounds mellow and the brighter strings seem to wake it up. I haven't done the Poly/Nano test myself but I will. Thanks for your video.

Thanks for the video. Very helpful. Never played Elixirs before, so this was a great guide. The nano's were brighter, but it seemed there was a lot, say, "cross resonance." Hello from Ireland. I was just today tempted to change to Elixir Polyweb strings and I rang my local music shop for advice. They weren't clear on the difference. And then tonight I find your excellent video. Thanks for going to all that work. I can now decide - I will stick with Nanoweb. It seems to me that the individual notes (which combine to make a chord) are clearer with Nanoweb. I agree with another contributor that sliding from chord to chord can be noisy but I guess with extra concentration on the use of fingers that can be reduced.
@JTravlos2 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Glad it helped!

I went into this expecting the Nanowebs to sound better. For some styles they did but for finger style I preferred the Polywebs. I have recently discovered different guitars along with different playing styles require different types of strings. Rather than picking a favorite string type for one guitar and then using it on all your guitars, string type should be selected based on what sounds best on each different guitar. The results are worth the time and expense. Polyweb is a thicker coating so less responsiveness with a lot less string squeak. Nanoweb, much lighter coating so more responsiveness but also, more string squeak. There are those who complain about the Elixir Polyweb coating getting fuzzy from wear. With a magnifying glass you can see that occurs where the coating has torn on the higher parts of the winding. You can remove the fuzz by running lightly across the string with a piece of fine Scotch-Brite sanding pad wrapped around the string. I do not recommend steel wool, the metal fibers get into places they shouldn't go. Be sure to put a piece of paper beneath the strings to protect the guitar's finish and catch most of the fuzz dust. The coating that keeps gunk from building up in the grooves and the inner wire from corroding will remain and continue protecting your strings. Also a warning, based on personal experience, watch out for counterfeit Elixirs. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. I bought four counterfeit sets online last year. The packaging is very convincing. The counterfeits do have a coating but it is sticky, or grabby, not slick like Elixirs. As a result the string squeak is bad. The gauges are also not the 12/53 marked on the box. My bass string was very weak so I checked with my dial caliper. It was only a 49.
@JTravlos2 жыл бұрын
This is great! Thanks!
@CatmanBill2 жыл бұрын
And speaking of counterfeits, I noticed some elixirs being sold for lower prices from China and I don’t mean to imply that everything that comes from there is counterfeit. For a moment, I thought maybe Elixer had a production facility in China. I’m not sure if I want to try polyweb. I’m accustomed to nano web for my Taylor. I have an old Guild F-47 that I put non coated strings on. Nice chatting.

That's funny. I was just thinking the Nanowebs sound better for finger style. The low strings of the Polywebs were muddy and got lost in the other strings.
@patricklundquist9869 Жыл бұрын
@@aleithiatoews6452 That kind of goes along with the first part of my statement that different guitars like different strings. My Eastman E10D (mahogany dreadnought, really likes 80/20's) Two months ago I bought an Eastman Double Top Grand Auditorium (DT30GACE). When it arrived the strings sounded fantastic. I asked the seller what strings he'd installed and he responded, "D'Addario." That was a real eye opener. It turns out that my opinion of D'Addario strings was woefully out of date. On top of that, Taylor announced in mid-May that from now on, instead of Elixirs, their guitars will ship with D'Addario XS Coated Strings.

@RickMcCargar2 жыл бұрын
Tough to do these. At 1:55 the nanoweb strung version is closer to the mics and aimed differently. That accounts for much of the difference in tone you hear at the 2:01 mark. Guitar position in relation to the microphones greatly affects the tone. Nice effort those. Which of those strings produces less finger squeaks in your estimation? According to their marketing blurbs, it should be the polyweb, was that the case for you? Thanks.
@JTravlos2 жыл бұрын
Hey, I started clarifying this in my later showdowns but the video you see was just "lypsynced" (?) to an earlier audio recording I made. I wanted to record everything the same exact way but basically cant do it with video rolling. So I record the audio separately. Think of how they do a music video. They playback the audio and just lipsync to it. Hard to explain, but its the only way to record everything the same exact way every single time. thanks for watching!

Anyone care to comment on how they feel? And how they last? Do polywebs feel heavier to play? Or do they feel smoother? Do they last longer, having the thickest coating?
@JTravlos Жыл бұрын
I always thought longevity was comparable. The polywebs felt smoother. Since the coating as thicker you couldnt really feel the windings of the strings as much. But eventually that coating peels off sort of like how dead skin looks like when it peels off your toes lol. Hopefully other people chime in with their experience.

Dude is that some ride in the beginning or your own work? Dig that shoegaze pop ride sound you had going on

What are best for fingerstyle?

Either are good. It is probably more of an opinion than a definitive answer. Try them both!

The Polywebs sounded much brighter and crisper to me.

So which one will last longer?
@JTravlos3 жыл бұрын
THATs the question. Hopefully others can chime in. Anecdotally, they last very long from my experience. Even though the coating wears out eventually the tone stays pretty consistent.

Now I can’t remember which ones I like and use on only one guitar. It sounds dull on every other guitar acoustic & electric
