I love early on you thought the story was about an innocent man serving hard time. When I showed my husband this song, that's what he assumed as well. But that LAST LINE. Three rounds into Kate McCannon. No apology, no regret. That's such a story and such a sketch of the man. Love it.
@DylanCameron923 жыл бұрын
"I could buy a diamond ring" is the key line to this song as it implies more than one thing. 1 the amount of time he has been saving 2. How much he loves her 3. The fact that he is ready to move foward and make her an honest women 4. In tangent to his pay he saved she is worth enough to save a quarter of his pay and 5 tells the reason as to why all the rage built up when he seen her with someone at the place they fell in love
@scottym.90772 жыл бұрын
I love the way the intensity of his guitars playing swells in intensity in the pause between “founder her with some other lover” and “so I put three rounds into Kate McCannon”. To me, it’s like feeling the rage build inside him as he sees it. Also, there’s a point in the outro when he hits the kick drum three times. To me, that felt like a subtle nod to the shots. Colter Wall tells just as much of a story with his playing as he does with his lyrics.

Back in the older country it was kinda popular to write a return song. ex). Kitty Wells with “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels”. A singer songwriter named Brittany Avery wrote a return song to Kate McCannon. It’s called “My Name is Kate McCannon”. Pretty much tells Kate McCannons part of the story. W.B Walker pitched her the idea and she put a lot of work into that song. She did an amazing job on the lyrics. And if you haven’t heard of W.B. Dude I love how much you appreciate lyrics and vocals despite not being a singer. This song stopped giving me goosebumps after the first million time I listened to it but seeing your reactions and passionate appreciation for it is like hearing it for the first time again. Keep it up man. Full send👊🏻

I just searched if you've done a reaction video on Sean Rowe - Soldiers Song, and I couldn't believe you didn't do one yet.

You should check out Benjamin Tod - We ain't even kin. Story telling on par or maybe better than Wall and Childers. Also John Moreland - Break my heart sweetly is a great one.

There's so much to love about this song and the performance, so I'll just mention a few. I love the technique he chose of detuning the guitar and using the capo so he could get the notes and chords he wanted, but with all the jangliness of loose strings. I love the overall story, but I really love how pithy it is and the sparse feeling throughout the song. All great poetry communicates lots of feelings and a ton of story with the most economical use of words possible. It's also told in such a fashion that the listener or reader has to do some of their own work, by use of imagination and thought, for the story to be fully told. It is never just handed over with a neat bow and sitting on a silver platter. Colter's story telling is on par with Billy Joe Shaver's. There's a line in "Fast Train to Georgia", for example, that goes, "They say my mammy left me, the day before she had me." Twelve words that tell of a lifetime of heartache. Kate McCannon is on that same level of poetry. I love how he often drags the part he's singing behind the melody he's playing. A couple of examples are when he sings, "I wasss workinnnnn in the mine" and again "I got me a job and I quit my ram-buh-lin". Ramblin' seems to take 2 or 3 times longer to say than you'd expect. I love the alternate moods by bringing the song down very quiet and then building it back up again. After he sings, "I found her with some other lover", his guitar playing and use of the kick drum really makes you feel the rage from that betrayal that the story teller felt building within himself at that moment. Like you, Michael, I too love how he offers up no more commentary after the line, "And I put 3 rounds into Kate McCannon". In the context of the whole song, it would almost be profane if he made commentary on it at that point. After all, for any song to mean something, there has to be a listener... and isn't it the listener's role to judge, forgive, explain, feel the tragedies of the story, have compassion... whatever comes to the heart and mind. Colter's job was to just pose the hypothetical question to the listener, which he did very well. Our job as the listeners is to resolve the feelings and thoughts that arise within ourselves from that story.

I stubbled across this video from boat test. I don't know how, but I'm glad. I don't play, but have always been a fan of great players, and it's awesome the way you break things down so fast. Also. I'm now a Colter wall fan and need a bottle of bourbon and his entire album. Can't wait to see the rest of this channel. Subbed

scorpiongsxr I second this. Chris knight is one of the best story tellers alive and down the river is the best murder ballad I have ever heard.

Nickk IRL said two years ago "When Colter Wall was born he was 62 years old" and it's brilliant. I've seen this episode before, but watching it again is just as good.

I loved his use of dynamics as part of the storytelling, strumming muted strings or doing simple picking then ramping it up to full strums. Gives it a great sense of direction musically to help propel the lyrics further.
