I saw Sierra back when she was kind of a mandolin wünderkind. But after a while she was just another great mandolin player in a field of great mandolin players. Then a few years ago, I look again, and she's a beast of a mandolin player, top-flight band leader, and destroying genre boundaries left and right (e.g. playing with Cory Wong). This makes me superbly happy, to know there's another astonishing musician who will still be climbing toward her peak when I die. I.e. her music will just get better for the rest of my life. What else do you want?
@NerdHerder5452 жыл бұрын
Related to her crossing genres, her short mandolin cover of Polyphia’s 40oz is ridiculous. She looks so incredibly chill running the whole thing down.
@leehjones2 жыл бұрын
@@NerdHerder545 I think we have Thile to thank for all of this. Between Punch Brothers and the whole Live From Here scene, he has announced that nothing - *nothing* - is off-limits to any musician. Well, honestly, Yo-Yo Ma kinda started it. He took the entire cello canon in the classic oeuvre, wrung every last ounce of life out of it, and left fellow musicians and listeners gasping for breath. They all said, "Yeah, but all you can play is classical music." "Hold my beer." Thile picked up on that, then Thile and Ma got together (Goat Rodeo) and we were off to the races. Sierra is drafting on that action, they've got Cory Wong on board, and there's no telling where this train goes. It's damned glorious, sez I.

Had the pleasure of seeing Sierra and Justin Moses in concert right before the pandemic. They were both absolutely amazing. And afterwards we went up to talk to Sierra and buy an album, their credit card machine was down and we only had enough cash for one. So we bought Justin's, and she gave us her cd for free! So 1) we owe you $20 Sierra! and 2) calling her "angelic" is absolutely right, she was spectacularly nice in person!

When I was about 7 or 8, my mother took me to his house in Deep Gap and I sat on the couch eating cookies and drinking lemonade while he played "Wildwood flower" for my mom and "If the ocean was whiskey" for me. Then he went on to play another 30 or 45 minutes. Just the 3 of us. Of course I was just a little kid but I somehow knew this was important and it's one of my most precious memories!

Could you do a lesson how you hear chord progressions?
@jonathanjohnson86562 жыл бұрын
I'm not in this guy's league but I have a suggestion and I hope it helps. Use the low E string or the A string if E doesn't work , find the 1 chord using those strings. Then after you have the 1 chord, try the 4 and 5 chords relative to the 1. A song like this uses many different chords and shapes, so you have to use the circle of fifths to find the chords on something this complex. But finding the 1 chord makes it easier for me to find the other chords. Again, I'm just a random guy and I am not saying my way is the best. But maybe I helped a little. And if anyone has a better way, don't bash me too bad . I don't have a degree in music nor am I a professional. I'm just sharing an old school method to figure out chord progressions. Hope it makes sense and works well for you.
